hw for dvd writing

2005-09-04 Thread Paulo Roberto
Hello,

Would you guys put and old Celeron (running Freebsd 5.3) 266Mhz with

I have this old machine and I am thinking about buying an internal DVD
writer for it, since it is cheaper than buying and external unit for my
laptop.

TIA

parallel ecp mode and vpo

2003-07-04 Thread Paulo Roberto
Hello,

I have searched the net and found nothing good.
I did set my mainboard BIOS to use ECP transfer mode (dma 3 irq 7).
I edited my kernel to:

device ppc0at isa? flags 0x8 irq 7

(is there a way to declare the dma I want to use?)
and when I boot I get:

Jul 1 10:36:42 delta /kernel: ppc0: Parallel port at port
0x378-0x37f irq 7 flags 0x8 on isa0
Jul 1 10:36:42 delta /kernel: ppc0: Generic chipset (ECP-only) in ECP
mode
Jul 1 10:36:42 delta /kernel: ppc0: FIFO with 16/16/16 bytes threshold
Jul 1 10:36:42 delta /kernel: ppi0: Parallel I/O on ppbus0
Jul 1 10:36:42 delta /kernel: imm0: NIBBLE mode unavailable!

and my zip-100 drive does not get recognized. Is it possible to use vpo
in ECP mode?? EPP and compatible modes are just too damn slow.

thanks,

 No, reboot.

Is there a way to start a script when crtl+alt+del is pressed? I looked
at the keymap, and only found BOOT PDWN and HALT. I would need it to
power down.

And BTW, I got DP-2 and RC-2 on two different machines, and both of

print server (USB)

2002-12-20 Thread Paulo Roberto
Hello,

I was reading the lpd man pages (and the web), but I did not find
anything related to simultaneus printing. Sorry if this is a too lame
question...

I currently got two print servers (running 4.6.2 and lpd), one for each
parallel printer, and since I have to substitute one printer (no longer
works properly) I was thinking about buying two USB ones (same model)
and put them plus the parallel on just one server to attend the demand.

Does lpd manages the three queues at the same time, printing
simultaneus in all three printers?

I read at the lpd manual that I can route print jobs to other printer
so I could make a balance on the load having two equal USB printers.

Does anyone have any experience/tips about it?

BTW machine I am planning to run it is a P-133 with 64MB ram. Is it
good enough for handling three queues? (I know that just one runs
smoothly...)

thanks

named initial lookup?

2002-07-13 Thread Paulo Roberto

Hi,

I have a on-demand link configured in freebsd, and every time the
system boots, when named starts, it sends a packet to the fake ip
(sticky route) port 53 (I made a firewall rule to block everything and
log so I could find what was going on) and initiates the dial.
Is it an initial check up from bind? Is there a way to disable this?
I even added this address to my database as localhost, so it wouldn´t
look this address up, put it did not worked, it still starts the dial.

Any ideas?

thanks

Re: named initial lookup?

2002-07-13 Thread Paulo Roberto

I think it is not sendmail because I have previously disabled it. I got
a server running Slackware Linux (same version of bind) with sendmail
installed and also have a link on demand and I do not have this
problem. It is becoming hard to trace it, and I guess it might be an
option of named itself that is looking to resolve that sticky route.

Just one other question, since I am new at FreeBSD, I installed the
squid cache (and also qmail), and I see there is a squid.sh script that
is ran by rc.d at boot, but it does not really initiate squid nor
qmail. I made an rc.local file that started those services. WHere do I
enable them? Do I have to put some kind of squid_enable=YES in
rc.conf? Same thing goes for qmail?
The qmail/squid.sh have a option start/stop, but where do I start them
in the boot scripts?

TIA

Could well be sendmail --- it does a bit of DNS work to establish
 it's
own identity when it starts up. Unfortunately you can't fake it via
/etc/hosts as sendmail bypasses that and uses the DNS directly.
