make buildworld stoppes with an error

2003-08-16 Thread ertank
Hello,

I was trying to upgrade my 4.7-RELEASE system to FreeBSD 5.x-CURRENT.

After make buildworld, the process comes until the stage 4 and there it
gives me the below error which is a copy-paste from the output:

FreeBSD 5.x-CURRENT sources are cvsupped as of 15 August 2003.

I tried to do a make buildworld with the FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE sources. I get
an error with that sources, too. But I am not sure if it was the same error.

Any one else has any idea about the problem?

Disk copying

2002-11-21 Thread ertank
Hello,

I want to backup my disk with all of its contents. Exactly, I want to copy
it completely to another disk.

I have only one freebsd partition and several slices on my disk. I want to
copy all the data to another bigger disk preserving my user and group
settings.

Is it possible to use cp? In this way I supposed to create my partitions
before and mount them under some partition and just cp -Rp / /newdisk but

Won't it start to copy the data recursively when copying reachs /newdisk?

Just curious.

Provided your system supports ACPI, that feature will be available in
FreeBSD 5.

Does 5.0 DP2 has this feature?

shutdown with power button

2002-11-18 Thread ertank
Hello,

I want to learn if there is a way to make the system shutdown with the key
on the case.

I searched the mailing list but could not find a solution. Also, man apm and
man apmd does not have some option for me that I could find.

My problem is if I press the case power key, system just cuts the power off.
And, this yields to a fsck on the next boot. I want the system to issue
'shutdown -p now' command if somebody accidentally presses the power key of
the case.

Best Regards,

Bad checksums on NIC packests

2002-10-01 Thread ertank

Hello,

I have a FreeBSD 4.6-STABLE system. 256MB RAM. My NIC is 3C905b-tx. My kernel includes
only this nic driver compiled in. Hardware is 200mmx, IDE disk system. My switch is
10/100 and non-managable.

My problem was first slow samba performance. After I tried ftp upload and download. I
see that my download speeds are reasonable but not fast enough. And, don't mention
about uploads. 40kb/sec average.

I decided to tcpdump during my upload and downloads. My command line was: tcpdump -i
xl0 -l -vv

I myself do not understand this type of outputs usually. But, one thing is very
interesting that there is a lot of bad checksum errors. So, I decided to post it to
the list for somebody's advice.

I do not think the problem is ethernet card. My subsustem is completely 3c905b or c
class NICs. I can copy 650mb over ms network really very fast. Also, I do not think
this is because of bad cabling. As I said above I have fast speeds. And, I changed
this cable time to time for another reasons.

I just want to ask where should I look? What should I change? I read about complains
about 3c905 NICs. On the other hand I read very proudy words about that NICs, too.

Here is some part of my ftp upload dump. There are bad checksum messages during
download, but not that much.

If anyone interests. I can post the complete dumps seperately. Two files are 200kb in
tarred gzipped format.

Thanks in advance.
