/dev/console and syslog

2007-10-21 Thread Tuc at T-B-O-H.NET
Hi,

I'm having an issue where if I have syslog output something to
/dev/console, it comes back to syslog again as a kernel: message.
I've verified that this is definitely something with /dev/console, since
even if I do :

valhalla# echo STRAIGHT TO CONSOLE /dev/console

I can :

valhalla# grep STRAIGHT TO CONSOLE /var/log/spool
Oct 21 16:12:07 valhalla kernel: STRAIGHT TO CONSOLE

Is there a way from syslog to write to the console but
NOT have it come back to syslog as a kernel: ?

Thanks, Tuc

redirect /dev/console to a file

2007-03-26 Thread Neil Short
I'd like to redirect /dev/console to some file that
can be read by the xrootconsole port.

Is this ambition feasible?

I like the functionality of xconsole; but it's not
very pretty.

According to the default /etc/syslog.conf, you should
be able to enable syslogd to log to a file, and then
run xrootconsole on that, I should imagine. ??

Details are found there, IIRC.

Yes, you can do that from /etc/syslog.conf. Don't have my PC right in front of
me right now, but doing that's trivial. Want to make sure you have permissions
for the file though because (if memory served me correctly) syslog's security
settings are fairly restrictive by default (mode: 600 owned by root, or
something similar).

/dev/cuaa gone in 6.0?? /dev/console doesn't work...

2006-03-08 Thread Mark Jayson Alvarez
Hi,
I'm trying to secure our cisco router by hooking its console to a freebsd 6.0
box. I was reading this document:
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2001/10/11/FreeBSD_Basics.html

It seems like /dev/cuaaN has been replaced by /dev/console. On my 6.0 box, I
can't seem to find /dev/cuaaN... I tried using /dev/console instead and I got
the same response Connected but it hangs... I can't do anything.
 The command I used was cu -l /dev/console -s 9600.

  On an older box (4.11) I used cu -l /dev/cuaa0 -s 9600 and it worked. I got
the login prompt of our router.

If ever I would make everything work... does this mean that only one user can
connect to our router or does freebsd have some sort of pseudo consoles???

 Thanks..

Ok, its working now.. How about multiple console connections using just a

Tabor,
Is it possible that your console is being redirected to a com port? The
handbook covers this topic in section 20.6.

Also some quick info that might help you out:
There are a few places that this can be configured: boot.conf,
/boot/loader.conf, /boot/loader.conf.local or /boot/loader.rc.

If /boot.conf refer to the Handbook Section 20.6 as well as boot(8)'s
man page.

In either /boot/loader.conf or /boot/loader.conf.local for the following
line:

console=comconsole
In /boot/loader.rc check for:
set console=comconsole
To set your console to display on your monitor using /boot/loader.conf
or /boot/loader.conf.local set (or replace) the following:

console=vidconsole
In /boot/loader.rc
console=vidconsole
Good Luck,

wasn't anything in the /boot directory. However, just to be sure I
copied everything in /boot and /boot/default from another FreeBSD 5.3R
system I had, and it started working again.

I have no idea what file it was or how it got changed, but thanks Ash.
