Don't know about ESXi but on others VM Managers i can change the
chipset emulation from ICH10 to ICH4. Can you change it to an older
chipset too?

So you're saying that he should have been using 8.3-RELEASE, then.

If you'll kindly go over to http://www.freebsd.org and look under
"Latest Releases", please note that "8.2" is a production release.
If you don't want it to be a production release, then find a way
to make it so, but please don't snipe at people who are using the
code that the FreeBSD project has indicated is a current production
offering.

There are many good reasons not to run arbitrary snapshots on your
production gear. It's unrealistic to expect people to run non-
RELEASE non-production code on their production gear. We can have
that discussion if you don't understand that, drop me a note off-
list and I'll be happy to explain it.

Otherwise, you've told him to run a "newer version," of which NONE
IS AVAILABLE, unless you're thinking 9.0, but FreeBSD has a rather
catastrophic history of "point zero" releases, and most clueful
admins won't run those in production without carefully measuring
the risks and benefits. So you've basically told him to run a
newer version without any such version being realistically
available.

WTF?

You want people not to use releases that "came out over a year
ago"? The generally sensible solution to that is to release
RELEASEs more than once every fourteen or fifteen months.

We've seen this. Or something that seems really like it.

We run dozens of FreeBSD VM's, many of which are 8.mumble. We have a
scripted build environment dating back many years, so generally servers
come out in a fairly reproducible form.

After several months of smooth running, we had need to shuffle some
things around, and migrated some servers to a different datastore.
Suddenly, one particular VM, our corp Jabber server, started randomly
disconnecting people every morning. Some inspection showed that the
machine was running, but disk I/O in the VM was freezing up.
Subsequent inspection suggested that it was happening during the
periodic daily, though we never managed to get it to happen by manually
forcing periodic daily, so that's only a theory. Given that several
times it appeared that one of the find commands was running, I was
guessing that something in the thin provisioned disk image for the
system had gone bad, but reading the entire disk with dd didn't cause
a hang, running the periodic daily by hand didn't cause a hang, etc.

Migrating the VM to a different host and datastore did not fix the
issue. Migrating the VM from an Opteron to a Xeon host with all the
latest ESXi 4 patches also didn't make any difference. Migrating the
disk image from thin to full seemed to fix it, but I only gave it a
day or two, then decided there were other good reasons to reload the
VM, so I nuked the VM, which, of course, fixed it.

In the meantime, a dozen other similar VM's alongside it run just
fine. My conclusion was that it was something specific that had gone
awry in the virtual machine, probably in the disk image, but I could
not identify it without significant digging that I had no particular
reason or inclination to do; since it appeared to be a VMware problem,
the "reload it and be done with it" seemed the quickest path to
resolution.

That having been said, if anyone has any brilliant ideas about what
would constitute useful further steps to isolate this, I can look at
recovering the faulty VM from backup and seeing if it still exhibits
the problem.

The sad part is that VMWare's "supported FreeBSD versions" are a joke, and

Unfortunately not. It's totally random. Some servers will "get the bug"

months later hit this crash.

That's a plan I'd like to execute but my free time for building that

I'm not that

Was there a setting to revert ACPI behavior from 8.x to 7.x? I thought I
read about that at one point or perhaps this was something available
back in the dev cycle when 8 was -CURRENT. *shrug* I know 9.0 and onward
has even more ACPI changes so assuming it truly is an ACPI bug I guess we
could cross our fingers and hope that the bug has mysteriously vanished?

I am definitely out of my league here and this is way over my head, to be
sure. Just a couple of shots in the dark for possibly covering a couple more
data points for your research. And I am a tad fuzzy on both as I have never
needed to dig into either because I've not had any trouble with either.

IIRC there are three different timer subsystems one may choose from. You may
want to look into expirementation with each of the three, just to see if
this changes any observed behaviors. Or to possibly rule it out.

Your situation sounds like a candidate for reverse logic - if I can't get
any handle on what's wrong I start at the opposite end and try to make a
list of what is "right" in an attempt to leave a smaller subset to probe.

I also think this most likely has nothing to do with what's happening, but
for some reason it just pops into my head. Try disabling msi in
/boot/loader.conf like this:

hw.pci.enable_msi="0"
hw.pci.enable_msix="0"

At least if it makes no difference maybe this will exclude it from being a
'possible'. Developers who are more in-depth aware of what the differences
are between 7.x and 8.x/9.x in the development timeline can probably provide
a better picture so as to narrow the field of what to look at. This is way
over my head, just wish I could help - I know and have experienced the kind
of quandary you have here (I feel for you). :-)

It sounds like you've established it's a storage issue, or at least

Please help me diagnose this crazy VMWare/FreeBSD 8.x crash

2012-03-28 Thread Mark Felder
Alright guys, I'm at the end of my rope here. For those that haven't seen
my previous emails here's the (not so) quick breakdown:

Overview:

FreeBSD ?? - 7.4 never crash
FreeBSD 8.0 - 8.2 crashes
FreeBSD 8-STABLE, 8.3, and 9.0 are untested (Sorry, not possible in our
production at this time, and we were hoping we could base some stuff on
8.3 for long term stability...)

ESXi: Confirmed ESXi 4.0 - 5.0 has this problem. Haven't tested on others.

History:

Over the course of the last 2 years we've been banging our heads on the
wall. VMWare is done debugging this. They claim it's not a VMWare issue.
They can't identify what the heck happens. We had a glimmer of hope with
ESXi 5.0 fixing it because we never saw any crashes in the handful of
deployments, but our dreams were crushed today -- two days before an
outage to begin migration to ESXi 5.0 -- when a customer's ESXi 5.0 server
and FreeBSD 8.2 guest crashed.

Crash Details:

The keyboard/mouse usually stops responding for input on the console;
normally we can't type in a username or password. However, we can switch
VTs.

If there's a shell on the console and we can type, we can only run things
in memory. Any time we try to access the disk it will hang indefinitely.

The server still has network access. We can ping it without issue. SSH of
course kicks you out because it can't do any I/O.

If we were to serve a lightweight http server off a memory backed
filesystem I'm confident it would run just fine as long as it wasn't
logging or anything.

On ESXi you see that there is a CPU spike of 100% that goes on
indefinitely. No idea what the FreeBSD OS itself thinks it is doing
because we can't run top during the crash.

This crash can affect a server and happen multiple times a week. It can
also not show up for 180 days or more. But it does happen. The server can
be 100% idle and crash. We have servers that do more I/O than the ones
that crash could ever attempt to do and these don't crash at all.
Completely inexplicable.

Things we've looked into:

Nothing about the installed software matters. We've tried cross
referencing the crashed servers by the programs they run but the base OS
is the only common denominator due to the wide variety of servers it has
affected.

Storage doesn't matter. We've tried different iSCSI SANs, we've tried
different switches, we've tried local datastores on the ESXi servers
themselves.

HP servers, Dell servers -- doesn't seem to matter either. (All with
latest firmwares, BIOSes, etc)

VMWare gave us a ton of debugging tasks, and we've given them gigabytes of
debugging info and data; they can't find anything.

VMWare tools -- with, without, using open-vm-tools makes no difference. I
think we've done a fair job ruling out VMWare.

I think we've finally found enough data that this is definitely something
in the FreeBSD world. I'm going to begin prepping some of the known crashy
servers with more debugging. Any suggestions on what I should build the
kernel with? They never do a proper panic, but I definitely want to at
least *try* to get into the debugger the next time it crashes. And when it
crashes, what the heck should I be running? I've never played with the KDB
before...

So, I updated gmake to 3.82 from ports and installed gcc47 from ports. I
updated /etc/make.conf as described here:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/custom-gcc/article.html

However, I don't have a libmap file so I skipped this one and the other
ones below in the article.

Here's some outputs:

# gmake -v
GNU Make 3.82
Built for amd64-portbld-freebsd8.2
Copyright (C) 2010 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html
>
This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it.
There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law.

# gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
Target: amd64-undermydesk-freebsd
Configured with: FreeBSD/amd64 system compiler
Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.2.2 20070831 prerelease [FreeBSD]

How do I tell the system to use gcc47 instead of 4.2.2 (if that's what
causes the problems)?

Compiling ffmpeg from source still failes on the same line as in my orginal
post.

Thanks a lot for any pointers that will help me resolve this. :-)

All the best,
Andy

Well, the nice thing about ZFS is that it makes dealing with this sort
of failure relatively painless.

OK. First you need to identify the failing drive physically. Do you
know which of the drives on your machine is ad1? Kind of important to
get this right. Many servers will give you helpful hints by displaying
error lights on broken drives, or you may be able to use something like
iLO or iDRAC to turn on an indicator LED. Or you may be able to tell by
other means. However you do it, be sure about this, as taking out one
of the good drives by accident will probably crash your system. Nb.
pro-tip: take some small sticky labels to the datacenter with you (the
sort you get for those year-planner wall calendars are ideal, but
anything will do) and mark the duff drive with them, on the drive caddy
before you pull the drive and on the drive itself if you need to reuse
the caddy.

Now, I can see from your zpool status that you are just using raw disks,
so no worries about partitioning or marking anything bootable. If you'ld
built the system as described in eg.
http://wiki.freebsd.org/RootOnZFS/GPTZFSBoot/RAIDZ1 so you were booting
from this zpool, then there would be extra steps needed here, but you
haven't so there aren't.

So, first take the drive out of the zpool. This will result in the
zpool state changing to DEGRADED:

   # zpool offline files ad1

Now physically extract the drive from the machine and replace it with
your brand new one. If this is not a hot-swap system that will involve
powering down and application of screwdrivers. If it is a hot-swap
system, then you need to ensure the OS recognized the new drive.

   # dmesg

Should show messages about 'ad1' near to the end.

   # atacontrol list

should mention the new drive. To force the new drive to be registered,
you could use:

   # atacontrol reinit ata0

but that will also reset ad0, and runs the risk of disruption of
service. It might be better to reboot if the system won't pick up the
new drive automatically.

Now you can rebuild your zpool:

   # zpool replace files ad1

You should see instant disk activity, and zpool status will show the
drive being resilvered. Eventually status will change to ONLINE.

That's it. All done.

> Btw, rebooting this server is not a problem if needed.

That shouldn't be necessary, assuming that you have hot-swap drives.

Cheers,

Matthew

Help! Drive failing in zpool

2012-02-16 Thread Andy Wodfer
I have a drive failing and it's a member of a zpool. Since I don't deal
with these things every day I thought I ask for some help... :-)

I've already ordered a new drive which will arrive shortly, but I was
wondering if someone could guide me through the process of taking out a
drive of the pool and replacing it with a new one and keep all the data
intact?

Ie.

- put drive in offline mode
- remove drive
- insert new drive
- whatever needs to set it up
- add it to the zpool
run

Btw, rebooting this server is not a problem if needed.

Here are some system details btw:

Probably as quick workaround you can set variable
kern.geom.part.check_integrity="0" in your /boot/loader.conf.

A link to the Handbook would be preferable to copying all the

If this is FreeBSD-9.0, then it's due to a GPT/gmirror conflict and a
more particular boot loader.

Need Help with a Raid 1 Time critical issue.

2012-02-07 Thread Morris Allen

To whom it may concern:

I have been using the following instructions, I am unable to maintain a
Raid1 installation. I have sent this to the Bug group and programming group
( docs/164620 <http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=164620&cat=docs> :
Raid 1 issues) and was told to contact your groups. During the initial setup
the Raid appears to be there. But when I reboot, the system stops, and will
not totally reboot. One issue is my fstab file, using basis install, does
not look anything like the file listed below. I really need to get this
going my time is getting short and I am in trouble on this box. On reboot,
it destroys the Raid that it indicated was present, before the reboot. I
have listed my equipment below and have pasted a copy of the instructions I
use to the letter.

Your help would be greatly appreciated, as I have a time limit on this box
and the clock is ticking. This unit must be working with all software
before Feb. 28.

Thanks

Morris Allen (Moe)

Environment

Intel DQ 57Tm Motherboard Intel Processor I5 650 8gb Kingston mem 2- 1TB
Sata 3 Hard Drives Unable to install Raid1

Description

Using the following instructions, I am unable to maintain a Raid1
installation. I have sent this to the programming group ( docs/164620
<http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=164620&cat=docs> : Raid 1
issues) and was told to contact document group. During the initial setup the
Raid appears to be there. But when I reboot, the system stops, and will not
totally reboot. One issue is my fstab file, using basis install, does not
look anything like the file listed below. I really need to get this going my
time is getting short and I am in trouble on this box.

This is the setup that I am trying to use.

# sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=17

Now create the mirror. Begin the process by storing meta-data information on
the primary disk device, effectively creating the /dev/mirror/gm device
using the following command:

Warning: Creating a mirror out of the boot drive may result in data loss if
any data has been stored on the last sector of the disk. This risk is
reduced if creating the mirror is done promptly after a fresh install of
FreeBSD. The following procedure is also incompatible with the default
installation settings of FreeBSD 9.X which use the new GPT partition scheme.
GEOM will overwrite GPT metadata, causing data loss and possibly an
unbootable system.
# gmirror label -vb round-robin gm0 /dev/da0

The system should respond with:
Metadata value stored on /dev/da0.
Done.

Initialize GEOM, this will load the /boot/kernel/geom_mirror.ko kernel
module:
# gmirror load

Note: When this command completes successfully, it creates the gm0 device
node under the /dev/mirror directory.

Enable loading of the geom_mirror.ko kernel module during system
initialization:
# echo 'geom_mirror_load="YES"' >> /boot/loader.conf

Edit the /etc/fstab file, replacing references to the old da0 with the new
device nodes of the gm0 mirror device.

Note: If vi(1) is your preferred editor, the following is an easy way to
accomplish this task:
# vi /etc/fstab

In vi(1) back up the current contents of fstab by typing :w /etc/fstab.bak.
Then replace all old da0 references with gm0 by typing :%s/da/mirror\/gm/g.

The resulting fstab file should look similar to the following. It does not
matter if the disk drives are SCSI or ATA, the RAID device will be gm
regardless.
# Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass#
/dev/mirror/gm0s1b none swap sw 0 0
/dev/mirror/gm0s1a / ufs rw 1 1
/dev/mirror/gm0s1d /usr ufs rw 0 0
/dev/mirror/gm0s1f /home ufs rw 2 2
#/dev/mirror/gm0s2d /store ufs rw 2 2
/dev/mirror/gm0s1e /var ufs rw 2 2
/dev/acd0 /cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0

Reboot the system:
# shutdown -r now

How-To-Repeat

This is a clean install each time and I have the same results everytime I
try to install the Raid1. No change.. this is the x64 BSD V9

Hi,

try

 set ctsrts on

Check the man pages for ppp. You see there several commands and options which
might will help you. I really cannot tell why my modem works. It was just a
strange trial and error sequence until it started to work.

ppp does not detect that there is a carrier. The command above might fixes this.

At this point, enter the command 'term'

You will get then a new prompt.

Enter

at

This should give you an OK response.

If this works, enter

atd#777

ppp will then leave the terminal mode and the prompt should change like this:

ppp>
Ppp>
PPp>
PPP>

You can now enter the following commands:

You should be connected now.

It seems that your only problem is the connection to the ISP. The rest seems to
work.

 set device /dev/cuaU0.0
 set ctsrts off
 set login
 set dial
 set phone #777
 set authname
 set authkey
 set ifaddr 10.0.0.1/0 10.0.0.2/0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0
 add default HISADDR
enable dns# set dns servers in resolv.conf
 nat enable yes
 nat deny_incoming yes

You have to replace the x and y with your values.

Good luck!

help needed for connecting internet with ZTE ac 8700 USB cdma ( EvDO) modem

2012-02-02 Thread Subhasish Chakraborty
I am new to Free bsd and installed PC-BSD 9 recently in my desktop. Its a
dual boot with windows 7 and I use ZTE ac8700 to connect to internet. From
windows the Usb stick is working fine ahe driver for windows need phone no
#777 , username and password to connect . I tested the device and its
working fine in Linux too . But in PC-BSD neither the default gui is
working nor the CLI is clicking. A wvdial port might have helped as in
linux it worked like charm with real easy configuration. I have some
duckduckgo-ing and tryed to edit a few configuration on my own as gui is
not helping .

In my my PC-BSD /etc/ppp/ppp.conf file looks like .

default:

set log Phase Chat LCP IPCP CCP tun command
ident user-ppp VERSION (built COMPILATIONDATE)

set device /dev/cuaU0.0

set speed 115200

set dial "ABORT BUSY ABORT NO\\sCARRIER TIMEOUT 5 \
\"\" AT OK-AT-OK ATE1Q0 OK \\dATDT\\T TIMEOUT 40 CONNECT"
set timeout 180 # 3 minute idle timer (the default)

enable dns # request DNS info (for resolv.conf)

isp:

set phone #777

set authname Username

set authkey pass

set dns 208.67.220.220 208.67.222.222 # openDNS

#set ifaddr 10.1.0.2/0 10.1.0.1/0 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0

# add default HISADDR
enable dns

Now ppp -ddial isp gives me

kernel: tun0: link state changed to UP

ppp[18473]: tun0: Warning: Chat script failed

in /var/log/messages ..

can someone please put some light on whats wrong in here or please help me
to write a ppp.config

I hope "rc.d" was a typo? :-) If not, you want /usr/local/etc/man.d/*.conf.

Thanks Yuri! As per man.conf(5), I created /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mdbtools.conf to
add /usr/local/share/man to the manpath (perhaps it could be named more
correctly "linux.conf", but for now the only manpages there are from mdbtools).

It's not uncommon, but such stuff should be fixed when porting something
from "Linux world" and manpages should go to /usr/local/man, as hier(7)
tells.

help accessing mdbtools man pages in /usr/local/share/man

I installed mdbtools from source on github and it put its man pages in
"/usr/local/share/man/man1", where the default man command doesn't find them
(although "man -M /usr/local/share/man mdb-export" works).

Thanks in advance,
Dale

P.S. mdbtools works well for accessing data in a MS Jet/Access MDB file.
There's an old version in the ports tree, but no maintainer (perhaps one day I
may have learned enough to update the port myself, but alas not yet).

Actually, typically one controller only runs two drives, IIRC. So you
could have one bad controller out of two. If swapping cables helps,
you may want to try getting a SATA card or something similar. (If
swapping cables means you can see the other two drives, a SATA card

But on the bright side, this is a perfect opportunity to install 9.0 RC3.

It will be very nice to have legacy installed mfsbsd in some reserved

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/remote-install/preparation.html

and having, except single user mode, another option in boot promt:
mfsbsd mode.
and 'nextboot --mfsbsd' to set remotely that boot option.

also be very very nice to have behaviour which loads mfsbsd in case of
unproper unmount. Now it is promt to enter #/bin/sh path.
Having mfsbsd installed allow remotely complete/correct all failed
operations that cause normal loading.

also AUTO booting mfsbsd in all cases that crash current system:
panic, deadlock os something else, will allow to analise many things
remotely and save, in some cases, many many time =)

Any thoughts before I just give up on recovering my data pool?

Ouch. All I can really say is 'Redundancy is not backup', but that's
a bit trite...

Yes, I know redundancy doesn't protect against operator error and thus
isn't a true backup. However this is a personal system whose main
function was to store DVDs, MP3s, photos, and the like. I can recreate
most of the content and have backups of the photos up until about a year
ago (bad me).

The one thing you haven't mentioned trying that might be worth the
attempt is trying the recovery from a 9.0 disk. There has been work
done on the ZFS system, and it's possible that something might work.
But that's mostly just to be thorough...

I may try this. However I suspect before anything can work, I have to
get the missing disk(s) detected by the OS. One (ad6) is detected but
full of errors. There is another that's not even seen.

As for what it was telling you: It was just saying it couldn't open
the drives. ;) Which does bring up one other option: If you've got a
different drive controller, you might try plugging the drives into
it. (In the hopes that it's the *controller* and not the drive that's
gone bad. Unlikely, bit it *does* happen.)

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. However in this case, the controller
is a SATA that's integrated into the motherboard. Since two of 4 are
working, that would mean the controller is OK, right? I guess I could
swap SATA cables for a test.

(Depending on the value of the data pool, a good data recovery service
might be able to do something as well. But they'd have to be a very
good service, and know what they were working with.)

And regarding my root pool, my system can't mount root and start. What
do I need to do to boot from my degraded root pool. Here's the current
status:

# zpool status

status: One or more devices could not be opened. Sufficient replicas
exist for
the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
action: Attach the missing device and online it using 'zpool online'.

Do I just need to do a 'zpool detach root /dev/ad6p3' to remove it from
the pool and get it to boot? And then once I replace the disk a 'zpool
attach root ' to fix?

Thanks for your time.

Personally, I'd do a 'zpool replace /dev/ad6p3 /dev/$NEWDRIVE', but
the above should work as well. What's odd though is that you can't
boot from it as is: Degraded should be considered functional, and it
should let you boot. You mentioned updating the zpool to v15. Did
you update the boot block at the same time? (Just checking the
basics.) It'd need to be able to read the updated zpool.

I assume I upgraded the boot block since I've had no trouble booting
before the drive failures and the upgrade was a long time ago.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Help Recovering FBSD 8 ZFS System

2012-01-02 Thread Daniel Staal
--As of December 31, 2011 1:40:59 PM -0800, Drew Tomlinson is alleged to
have said:

Thus it appears I am missing ad16 that I used to have. My data zpool was
the bulk of my system with over 600 gig of files and things I'd like to
have back. I thought that by creating a raidz1 I could avoid having to
back up the huge drive and avoid this grief. However it appears I have
lost 2 disks at the same time. :(

Any thoughts before I just give up on recovering my data pool?

Ouch. All I can really say is 'Redundancy is not backup', but that's a bit
trite...

The one thing you haven't mentioned trying that might be worth the attempt
is trying the recovery from a 9.0 disk. There has been work done on the
ZFS system, and it's possible that something might work. But that's
mostly just to be thorough...

As for what it was telling you: It was just saying it couldn't open the
drives. ;) Which does bring up one other option: If you've got a
different drive controller, you might try plugging the drives into it. (In
the hopes that it's the *controller* and not the drive that's gone bad.
Unlikely, bit it *does* happen.)

(Depending on the value of the data pool, a good data recovery service
might be able to do something as well. But they'd have to be a very good
service, and know what they were working with.)

And regarding my root pool, my system can't mount root and start. What
do I need to do to boot from my degraded root pool. Here's the current
status:

# zpool status
   pool: root
  state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices could not be opened.

Personally, I'd do a 'zpool replace /dev/ad6p3 /dev/$NEWDRIVE', but the
above should work as well. What's odd though is that you can't boot from
it as is: Degraded should be considered functional, and it should let you
boot. You mentioned updating the zpool to v15. Did you update the boot
block at the same time? (Just checking the basics.) It'd need to be able
to read the updated zpool.

Unless using a freshly newfs-ed partition, it will likely be safer
to use restore -x instead of -r; see the description of -r in the
restore(8) manpage.

Help Recovering FBSD 8 ZFS System

2011-12-31 Thread Drew Tomlinson
I have a FBSD 8 system that won't boot. Console messages suggest I lost
my ad6 drive.

When I created the system, built root on a zfs mirror and a raidz1 pool
for data. I've managed to boot into an 8.2 Fixit shell and been able to
mount root on /mnt/root. However my raidz1 pool (data) can't be
imported. I'm *really* hoping there is some way to fix this.

From the fixit shell, here is what I get when I run 'zpool import':

# zpool import
  pool: data
id: 10923029512613632741
 state: UNAVAIL
status: The pool was last accessed by another system.
action: The pool cannot be imported due to damaged devices or data.

However I'm not exactly sure what this is telling me other than
something "bad". I did capture this information when I upgraded to
version 15:

# 11/26/2010 - DLT
# http://www.freebsddiary.org/zfs-upgrade.php
#
# After upgrading to zpool v 15 and learning about upgrading zfs file
systems,
# I decided to take a snapshot of disks. It's interesting in the zpool
history

# commands, it shows different physical disks than what are currently shown.
# I don't know why.

Of course. And in addition, how about that?

NOT TESTED! READ *FULLY* BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!

For this example, /dev/ad0s1a is the / partition.
There are other partitions (such as /var or /home)
associated to other device files. Let's also
assume /dev/ad0s1e is the /var partition.

Onto the /var partition (or /home or any scratch
oartition), copy the content from / (primarily
because of /sbin, /bin and maybe /etc); maybe
use this approach:

# cd /var
# dump -0 -L -a -u -f - /dev/ad0s1a | restore -r -f -

Make sure /var does _not_ contain directory
names identical to those found on the / partition!
As I said, maybe use /scratch. :-)

(Oh, and you can of course shorten the dump
parameters to -0Lauf and restore's to -rf,
but I chose this representation for making
implicitely clear why to use _those_ options.)

Then umount / and mount /var (I'll keep this
for the example) as the new / (which now has
all the things / should have):

# umount /var
# umount -f / ; mount -t ufs /dev/ad0s1e /

Then the device associated to / should be free
to be unmounted - a step desirable, but it should
be no a "big" problem to operate on the device
files associated with a _mounted_ partition.

The more I think about it... /var is a really
bad choice. Use /scratch, or at least /home.

AGAIN: NOT TESTED! MAY BLOWENFUSEN & CORKENPOPPEN! :-)

Single-user and unmounted partitions are desirable but not required.

Not in a useful way -- you can bring the system down to single user, but
you will be logged out and not able to log in again.

If you need to do this level of admin work on a remote machine, you
will need to have remote console access. There are numerous ways to do
that -- big name servers tend to have this capability built in nowadays;
look for terms like 'lights-out management', iDRAC, iLO, ALOM, IPMI --
but probably the cheapest way is to set up a serial console from a
nearby machine. See:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/serialconsole-setup.html

It's just a remote monitor. It's nice to have.

Take either the Macbook or Windows machine and install the APCagent client
program to monitor. Pretty easy to find. Very low system resource utilization.

it turned out that the modem was at fault. the first time,
the tech fixed it partially. by installing a NEW modem
[router], i was back on. so is everything else that runs
thru my switch.

(((this time, very soon--say in the morning, my time--i'm
going to plug the router into my surge protector. just
because it msy prevent another fault.)))

Re: dead; need help reconnecting

2011-12-04 Thread Ryan Coleman
They probably switched it from NAT to passthru with only 2 IPs.

But that's not your problem to figure out.

What you need to do is what the error is from:
Check the following:
1) Computer (is one computer having an issue or could one computer be the CAUSE
of the issue?)
2) Cabling - is there a bad Ethernet cable. Replace any custom cables with
prefab. You'd be amazed how many problems come from bad cuts.
3) Networking layer - is there a bad NIC or switch? - you've had this problem
before.
4) When you bring the network to one device - can you get online? Can someone
ping your public IP address from somewhere else?
5) Is the Telco in the midst of an outage or did hardware fail?

There is more to those 5 items but they are great ones to work from.

9 times out of 10 it's somewhere under #1.

Also I suggest a proper UPS and the apcupsd daemon. I use it for all my UPS's
in the field. All 10 of them.

Feel free to install it and connect to d3photography.com:3551

ryan,

by "dead" i meant that i had 0.0 connection to the net.
long-story-short, it was indeed the telephone company's
modem that blew out. they were able to get one circuit
working, and they were content with that. but i was still
dead. this morning a telco technician [and friend] dropped
by with his tools and after several calls to the office for
my IP's and other info got me back online.

I have no idea how their router/modem works; i have no idea
how they were able to get my wife's PC back, much less my
entire domain.

(this is further OT, but FWIW, one guy suggested that a
power surge may have broken the modem/router. 30-35 years
ago a =real= modem ran at 1200 baud and was lightening fast.
obviously, i haven't kept up... .)

Should adding "nwkey key" to ifconfig_wlan0 line above be enough?
Key may be in ascii or in hex (in which case it must start with 0x).

As you should probably already know wep provides 0% security so
having wep or open network gives you almost exactly same amount of security.

wireless help with wep authentication

2011-11-20 Thread Rob Clark
Running fbsd 8.2R on a Dell C640 laptop.
Using a pcmcia card with atheros.

My 2wire wireless router comes setup default with
wep open with wireless security enabled, i.e., needs
the default passkey from the router. I cannot get the
ifconfig line correct so as to authenticate this way,
and have tried many different strings of text here.

However, following the handbook, I turned off "enable
security" (on the 2wire router) to test things, hence,
using wep (not as authmode shared or authmode open)
and it works using the following in /etc/rc.conf:

wlans_ath0="wlan0"
ifconfig_wlan0="ssid Mynetname DHCP"

Mynetname is different -- of course.

I can browse the web and ping with 0% packet loss.

I have not delved into using
a /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf yet, I was
hoping i could get it done in rc.conf with ifconfig.

I have tried many many things, for days on end for
authenticating with the passkey from the router.
Any help appreciated, I can provide further info and
things I've tried -- most things in the handbook
wireless section, minus wpa_supplicant.conf.

Thanks In Advance,
Rob

I remember hearing at work that dnsmasq could do that, perhaps with a

Actually, yes, that's a good idea too. Should have much the same effect
and it's been available in BIND approximately forever. There's
difference in the niggling details of how it all works, so worth
experimenting with the different possibilities.

Views are a way of giving a different answer depending on who is asking
the question -- how does that help the OP when he's always querying from
within his 10.0.0.0/8 network? He's the client connecting to the VPN here.

You can simply create a forward zone.

If this should only apply to your VPN clients, then create a view that
matches only their IP, for example:

acl trusted { 127.0.0.1; ::1; 192.168.0.0/24; };

view internal_in in {
match-clients { trusted; };
recursion yes;
additional-from-auth yes;
additional-from-cache yes;

zone "." {
type hint;
file "named.root";
};

zone "avocat-conseil.fr"
{
  type forward;
  forwarders { 192.168.252.252; };
  forward only;
};
};

I have the exact one setup here, allow me to explain.

There's a server at my parents' office (wow this sounds so awkward, when
I re-read it) that handles:
- dhcp
- dns
- firewalling
- smb shares
- routing

There's also a small VPN box that's, so to speak, outside our perimeter
because it's an appliance and I have 0 level of control over it, it runs
at 192.168.252.252 in its own separate VLAN and establishes a VPN with
some law organization thingy, using an IP range of 172.30.*

>From the server, I route 172.30.* to the VPN box, and I also make that
box authoritative for a few domains, including the one quoted above.

I'm not certain what you're trying to accomplish, but this works like a
charm here.

This sounds like a job for a static-stub domain. That's a fairly new
feature in BIND, so you may well need to install bind98 from ports. See
the documentation here:

Hmmm I don't think you're going to have much fun at all if you try
and modify your named configuration depending on whether your VPN is up
or not. DNS TTLs are generally of the order of days -- that should be
taken as a measure of the minimum time that should go between restarts
of a recursive DNS (ideally, and as a long term average). Better to
just fail the lookup when the VPN is down.

Cheers,

Re: DNS config help

2011-11-02 Thread Michael Sierchio
It depends...

some VPNs push routes, including default routes, and nameservers and
search paths, but it's up to the client on how to handle it. Some of
these will set /etc/resolv.conf, etc.

What *kind* of VPN are you talking about? OpenVPN? PPTP? L2TP?

I generally prefer dnscache to BIND, and the mechanism for selective
resolution is straightforward.

Some large companies, HP included, just publish internal
(non-routable) addresses for hosts on their public servers, which
solves the remote access DNS problem.

2011-11-02 Thread AN
I have a question about how to configure DNS. My local network is 10.x,
and I sometimes need to connect to a remote VPN. My question is how do I
configure BIND to forward queries to a different server only for a
specific domain.

When I am connected to the VPN, vpn.example.com, I want queries for
anything going to example.com to go a specific DNS, and everything else
on 10.x to go to my regular DNS. Please let me know if I need to provide
more info. Thanks in advance for any help.

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=161927

If there is help throughout it sure is not in the 9.0 RC1 version.

I object to the closing of this pr without any review by the current
list. I can not understand how you can say there is help info provided
in bsdinstall. The very first dialog box where users select (install)
has no help. Every dialog box shown should have a help option. Saying it
will come later is not the professional way software is released to the
public. This is not the Freebsd standard.

bsdinstall is the front door to FreeBSD and is the first thing
installers see when trying to install it. Do you really want to show the
public such a lack of pride in doing a complete job. In its current
condition bsdinstall is not ready to be released. It gives the public
the wrong impression (image) of what a great OS Freebsd is. Too many
developers and other volunteers have invested tons of hours to have
their united effort disrespected by a installer that is incomplete. This
pr about adding help info is not the only outstanding pr on bsdinstall.

Both the "Flash" plugin and mplayer use the mixer's pcm
channel for output (unlike CD audio). Maybe you'll find
that mplayer is able to play *.mp3, but isn't the optimal
program to do so - in this case have a look at xmms which
can play both *.mp3 and *.ogg (a popular format when you
want to make your CDs' content available on your system).
And xmms also is able to play CD audio.

Doesn't work _anymore_. :-)

No, "modern" (note the quotes) indicates disimprovement,
reduction and removal of functionality that has been
taken as granted for many years. :-)

In this specific case, it is. In my old PC, I had one to
connect the ATAPI drive to the sound card (a CMI based
PCI card, no onboard stuff). This _did_ work perfectly
using "cdcontrol play " and the mixer's CD channel.

I'll install that wire tomorrow, just to check - I just
hope my cheap (and nearly crappy) mainboard does have
support for it. I can't use external wiring (to the
sound "card's" line-in connector) as the drive doesn't
have a front connector anymore. See "modern". :-)

OS is 8.2-STABLE/x86 of late August.

As far as I could understand, the track files /dev/acdXtYY
will be gone in the upcoming 9.0, as well as the acd device
files in favour of cd (the optional, but very nice ATAPICAM
interface used by recording programs). Basically, I do
appreciate merging acd and cd (so "one device file per
device" becomes true), but if the price is that CD audio
doesn't work anymore... we'll see.

No, but I _did_ look at that anyway, because something I read while resarching
this problem indicated that I should. And those (mixer) settings are all OK.

Anyway... NEVERMIND! I fiddled a few things some more last night... nothing
that really should have made any difference at all... and I re-booted and
today, now, the sound _is_ playing when I watch YouTube videos in Firefox.
I really don't understand why because I really didn't change anything. I did
install mplayer and cdparanoia, and then I used the latter to suck some .wav
files off of one of my old CDs and then used mplayer to play them (which
worked OK) but I don't see how any of that should have had any effect on
the audio coming out of the flash plugin for Firefox. Oh well! It works
now, and mplayer can play .wav and .mp3 files too. So mostly everything is
working now, and I am happy.

But playing a CD using cdcontrol still is not working. That's OK. I can
easily live without that. I was only using it for testing purposes anyway.
Still, it is a shame it doesn't just work.

I do believe that the little wire is manditory. So that explains why it
doesn't work for you. But I have the little grey wire installed, so I don't
know why it doesn't work for me.

Does the Handbook mention to check your mixer settings?
Make sure to try that. Use any "simple-enough" media
player to play some MP3, OGG or WAV file (e. g. per xmms
or whatever comes with your preferred desktop environment).
Make sure you have "vol" and "pcm" up.

% mixer
Mixer vol is currently set to 100:100 <--- This.
Mixer pcm is currently set to 84:84 <--- And this.
Mixer line is currently set to 75:75
Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0
Mixer cd is currently set to 75:75 <--- This too.
Mixer rec is currently set to 75:75
Mixer igainis currently set to 0:0
Mixer monitor is currently set to 75:75
Recording source: mic

The problem regarding audio CDs seems to be quite "modern".
I also cannot play them anymore (but I don't have that
special wire installed at the moment). Audio is VIA HDA.

I also have a Gigabyte board with HDA audio, and it won't directly play
CD sound either. I had already ripped all of my CDs to .ogg files, so I
hadn't needed to play the CDs directly. I just tested ripping a small
section of a CD using cdparanoia and it does produce a .wav audio file
that can be played using sox. I also notice on my computer that mixer
doesn't show any controls for CD audio. Unfortunately, I don't remember
if CDs worked properly on this computer when I had Linux installed, so I
don't know if the problem is FreeBSD or the motherboard. I did find
that I have a program called kscd (for KDE) that will play, but I
suspect that it uses digital extraction instead of playing from audio.

My system uses a Gigabyte GA-MA785GPM-US2H, and the sndstat output is:
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 64bit 2009061500/amd64)
Installed devices:
pcm0: (play)
pcm1: (play/rec) default
pcm2: (play/rec)
pcm3: (play/rec)

Let me know if you want further information.

In this case, try to use a terminal emulator which does
have support for UTF-8 both on input and on output. Make
sure your charsets are configured properly. With this
preparation, you should (1st) see the correct file names
in your native language and (2nd) be able to enter (or
complete) their filenames as desired on the command line.

I may add:

D) Learn to avoid non-ASCII characters in filenames (just
   like whitespaces and "special" characters).

I'm following this rule for my entire "IT career" now and
I'm very pleased by the results. :-)

A) learn to use wildcards.
B) learn to use the '-i' option to rm
C) learn to use 'echo' to 'test' filename expansions.

For your 'problem' files, put a '?' in anywhere there is a space or a
'strange character'. Check what happens using echo, then use 'rm -i', so
you make sure that you delete *only* the particular file you intend to.

e.g. for the specific file you cited above try:

   echo 28b?Kjoepesenter?n?ringsg?rdeier.docx

*ASSUMING* that that shows;
  28b Kjoepesenter n<91>ringsg<86>rdeier.docx

then try:
   rm -i 28b?Kjoepesenter?n?ringsg?rdeier.docx

Assuming that it asks yout about deleting the full file name, type a 'y'.

Repeat for each 'problem' file.

That's probably UTF-8 encoding of the Norwegian string. You'd need to quote
the characters in a fashion appropriate for whichever shell you use; but an
easier way is likely:

  rm -i *Kjoepesenter*

Help! Can't delete files ...

2011-10-19 Thread Andy Wodfer
A client has uploaded several files through a CMS and these files contain
Norwegian letters (I think). Æ Ø and Å.

I need to delete about 20 files, but I can't do it through the CMS nor by
command line on this FreeBSD 8.1 STABLE server. There's something with the
character encoding/keyboard or server setup I think.

Please advice.

This is what a file looks like when I ls:

28b Kjoepesenter n?ringsg?rdeier.docx

ls | more:

28b Kjoepesenter n<91>ringsg<86>rdeier.docx

If I try:

# rm 28b Kjoepesenter n<91>ringsg<86>rdeier.docx
Ambiguous input redirect

...

Thank you again. Tags rule! The following excerpt illustrates the
concept I have tested in my lab:

pass in on $dmz from any to any tag FROMDMZ
pass in on $inside from any to any
block out on $inside tagged FROMDMZ

The second rule is required to create state for the return traffic to flow
from $dmz to $inside.

The problem is, there could be several routed networks behind the
inside interfaces. Not all inside networks are directly connected, and
the :network macro works only for directly connected interfaces,
right?

I guess the tagging feature can be useful. Thank you for the hint. If

Actually you can with ipfw. The following concise ruleset should do it:

check-state
permit ip from any to any recv INSIDE xmit DMZ keep-state
permit ip from any to any recv INSIDE xmit OUTSIDE keep-state
permit ip from any to any recv DMZ xmit OUTSIDE keep-state

You may use urpf-failed instead :network
urpf-failed: Any source address that fails a unicast reverse path
forwarding (URPF) check, i.e. packets coming in on an interface other
than that which holds the route back to the packet's source address.

Excuse me, I do not see how this is relevant to my question (allowing
traffic to be initiated from a more secure interface to a less secure
interface and not vice versa).

What if you combine macros and lists?
The ruleset below seems "scalable" to any number of interfaces.

inside1 = em1
inside2 = em2
dmz = em0
insides = "{" $inside1:network $inside2:network "}"

pass in on $dmz from $dmz:network to any
block in on $dmz from any to $insides

This expands nicely to:
lab# pfctl -vf te
inside1 = "em1"
inside2 = "em2"
dmz = "em0"
insides = "{ em1:network em2:network }"
pass in on em0 inet from 192.168.73.0/24 to any flags S/SA keep state
block drop in on em0 inet from any to 10.0.0.0/29
block drop in on em0 inet from any to 192.168.56.0/24

pf has the concept of packet tagging. So you can write a small rule to
tag traffic crossing eg. your set of internal interfaces and then write
one ruleset to filter all that traffic identified by tag.

Quoting pf.conf(5): "This can be used, for example, to
provide trust between interfaces and to determine if packets
have been processed by translation rules."

I think that's roughly equivalent to what the OP was asking about.

Cheers,

Matthew

Sorry, you can't do this with pf, ipf or ipfw (the 3 firewalls in
FreeBSD). There is no concept of security level at all, you must specify
on each interface the traffic allowed (in input and output).

My reply was about the use of the interface:network addresses.

Regards.

Excuse me, I do not see how this is relevant to my question (allowing
traffic to be initiated from a more secure interface to a less secure
interface and not vice versa).
