Printing from KDE - Windows XP server ...

2006-05-07 Thread Marc G. Fournier

I think I have everything setup right, but when I try and print a test
page, on the windows side, it says 'Size 64.0 KB/3.70MB' ... so its not
printing, cause it hasn't receivd the whole file ...

I'm running KDE 3, CUPs installed, on FreeBSD 6.x ...

is there something obvious I'm overlooking, to get that test to actually
print? :)

thanks ...

How very odd.
I obtained my KDE by upgrading to v 3.0.3 via the ports (yes I know I
could upgrade further, but if it ain't broke ...).

BTW it is the KLJettool not KJettool. FWIW here is the command that the
KDE widget invokes.
kljettool -caption %c %i %m

Perhaps you could locate kljettool?
when I try this it gives:
/usr/local/bin/kljettool
/usr/local/share/apps/kljettool
/usr/local/share/apps/kljettool/pics
/usr/local/share/apps/kljettool/pics/kljetlogo.png
plus doc files icons and so on

Can't. It won't run on anything but Linux. (Yet another reason why
the BSDs should have their own, non-GPLed desktop.)

Brett - that simply isn't so.
I run FBSD 4.8/KDE3.0 and only mentioned it to you after invoking it
myself. It certainly WILL run. Whether it is effective for you is
another matter of course.

The owners of the machine installed FreeBSD 4.8, with KDE as supplied as a
FreeBSD package on the install disk. This package installs the KDE utlities
package as a dependency. However, the utilities package does not include the
KJettool utility, nor is that utility available as a separate port.

After I saw your message, I tried to install the utility separately, but could
not find the utility except as an RPM. If one goes to the KDE code repository
and looks in the CVS tree, one finds that the branch with BSD support is
empty. All that's there is a comment saying that BSD support didn't work and
was discontinued.

So, perhaps an earlier version of KDE for FreeBSD had the utility, but the
current one does not.

Printing from KDE

2003-07-06 Thread Brett Glass
As most folks here know, I'm not a great fan of KDE, because
it is GPLed and also highly specific to Linux (many of its
features simply don't work under FreeBSD). However, I've been
asked to get KDE working on a few FreeBSD systems belonging to
a client, and am trying to muddle through for their sake.

One of the things I simply haven't been able to figure out yet,
and can't find any documentation for, is how to set up printing
from KDE on FreeBSD. KDE's docs claim that it has an Add printer
wizard, but this utility seems to be absent from the FreeBSD port...
as are the drivers for specific printers (in this case, they need
to print to HP LaserJets using PCL4). Does anyone out there know
(a) where the missing utility and drivers are; and (b) how to
configure them?

Forsake the wizard for ports/print/apsfilter and lpd

KDE works perfectly for me, but I had 2 KDE related printing problems...

First: many programs default to A4 paper size, and
Second: in konqueror the default print to UNIX LPD Print System
option was using some strange set of options, that would not work.
I changed the setting to Print Through an External Program and
just set it to lpr and it works fine.

Don't be too excited. I installed my HP Deskjet 6122 using this system
- seemed to be flawless - but the printer still won't print! :-)
