Microsoft USB wireless mouse can not work
Hi, all I have a Microsoft USB wireless mouse, but it cannot work in FreeBSD, neither in console nor in KDE. It goes well in Linux and Windows. However, after I plug the receiver into the USB interface, the kernel recongizes the hardware, and I get this in /var/log/message May 20 18:19:15 Earth kernel: uhid0: Microsoft Microsoft USB Wireless Mouse, rev 2.00/0.17, addr 2, iclass 3/1 I tried sysinstall-configure-Mouse, chose auto for the type and enabled the moused, but nothing happens. usb wireless mouse prob on 5.2.1
I'm having problems getting a logitech wireless mouse working on 5.2.1 (cvsupped updated 12 hours ago). I had this working without problem with exactly the same hardware a few weeks ago but had to reinstall, for various reasons and sheepish mumble didn't make any copies of the configuration/sheepish mumble. It was very easy the first time... Oddly, it looks to me as though it ought to work. But it doesn't, neither in the console nor in X. I'd be grateful for any pointers. Re: Microsoft wireless mouse problem
Oops. I meant to reply to this sooner. On 04/17, Mark Ovens rearranged the electrons to read: Ah, now that _does_ WFM, and that fact makes me suspect that the problem lies with the USB driver rather than the mouse driver. I think you're probably correct in that the problem lies in the USB driver. I'd previously written to a Matthew Will who posted to freebsd-current a while back about this same problem. He replied saying that the problem ended up being something to the effect of a silent exit in the USB driver that caused the problem. That's something that's outside of the scope of my knowledge to monkey with, but perhaps it'll help somebody else who's reading this and sufficiently motivated... I'm not sure what was different this past reboot, but I plugged the mouse into the PS/2 port and added the allscreens_flags option to /etc/rc.conf and now the wireless mouse works on both the console and in X. Nothing I did would make it work when connected to the USB port. Now, the mouse is detected as: psm0: PS/2 Mouse irq 12 on atkbdc0 psm0: model IntelliMouse Explorer, device ID 4 /etc/rc.conf options look like this: moused_enable=yes moused_type=auto allscreens_flags=-m on /etc/X11/XF86Config options look like this: Section InputDevice Identifier Mouse0 Driver mouse Option Protocol auto Option Device /dev/sysmouse EndSection (I figured I'd deal with the extra buttons once I actually got it working.) So, it would appear I can at least use the mouse for now. I've got one and spent ages searching the mailing lists and Google and it would appear that no-one can make them work. Apparently Logitech cordless mice work and, as you say below, the corded version of the MS mice do, but not the MS cordless ones :-( FWIW, I _suspect_ that it may be to do with the fact that the Intellipoint s/w that drives these things under Windows can report the battery status, which must be transmitted from the mouse, and it could be these messages that is confusing the USB (or mouse) driver under FreeBSD - the fact that the corded versions work supports this theory. [snip] Plugging the mouse cord on the wireless receiver into the PS/2 mouse port doesn't seem to have any effect on the matter -- the system detects a mouse on the psm0 port, but it still doesn't respond to movement. Device drivers are beyond my capabilities but if there are any USB driver hackers in the UK (Nick Hibma?) who would be interested in getting them working then I am prepared to lend them my mouse for a couple of weeks. Microsoft wireless mouse problem
I tried sending this to freebsd-hardware, but nobody replied, so I thought I would try here, as well. On one of my machines, I'm running FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT (last built on Jan 15th, 2004). I recently purchased a Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop, which is a wireless setup with a PS/2 keyboard and a USB mouse (with a USB-PS/2 converter, if I need it). The system recognizes both the keyboard and mouse during boot (and the keyboard actually works right from the loader): ] ums0: Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop\M-. 1.00, rev ] 2.00/73.73, addr 2, iclass 3/1 ] ums0: 5 buttons ] atkbdc0: Keyboard controller (i8042) port 0x64,0x60 irq 1 on acpi0 ] atkbd0: AT Keyboard flags 0x1 irq 1 on atkbdc0 ] kbd0 at atkbd0 The system also correctly detects when the USB mouse is unplugged and plugged back in: ] ums0: at uhub0 port 1 (addr 2) disconnected ] ums0: detached moused starts just fine (automatically) during the system boot, and XF86, using /dev/sysmouse, starts without complaining about anything. XFree86 -config detects the mouse as sysmouse, as well. Unfortunately, the mouse doesn't respond at all. On the console in X, I get the mouse pointer in the center of the screen, but it doesn't respond to the movement of the mouse. When I plug in a regular, non-wireless USB mouse (an IntelliMouse Explorer, to be precise), it's detected as /dev/ums1 and works just fine both on the console (with moused running) and in X. ] ums1: Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM), rev ] 1.10/3.00, addr 3, iclass 3/1 ] ums1: 5 buttons and Z dir. So, I'm assuming my kernel USB configurations are correct. I've tried killing moused and starting X using the ums0 device directly, but that didn't work either. Plugging the mouse cord on the wireless receiver into the PS/2 mouse port doesn't seem to have any effect on the matter -- the system detects a mouse on the psm0 port, but it still doesn't respond to movement. Wireless Mouse?
I'll start this post by saying THANKS to all involved who have provided me with the answers to my last two posts (as frustrating as I'm sure they were). So far my FBSD box is living up to its reputation as being a windows replacement. Now I would like to configure a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. I've got the keyboard all hooked up and working, however, in version 5.1-Release of FBSD I only see either a sysmouse or serial, of which I've tried with no success. Is there a modification or port I need to add for a wireless mouse? Anyone? Try unplugging the mouse and receiver at boot time, and then watching the messagse log when you plug it in. See what appears in there and if that might give any pointers. To watch your messages log, do the following (as root) before plugging in the mouse and the receiver: tail -f /var/log/messages When you plug the mouse and the receiver in, some more lines should appear in this file.
