It has always just worked properly for me by adding them to ~/.fonts/
and restarting the application. The handbook section on fonts in Xorg
also seems to confirm this:

all fonts in /usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/ as well as ~/.fonts/ are
already made available to Xft-aware applications.

This is  a quick one:  how/where can I get a cursive font
for abiword? or even OO?

You can look for urw fonts in the ports - this was the best I could
find, anyway. If you find anymore please let me know what you find.
