It is indeed possible to have FreeBSD read from a FAT formatted drive however this is not necessary if you will be sharing the files via a network connection. If you are sharing files to windows machines then it is easier to have the files to be shared on a UFS formatted partition and to use

Well, I got past the problem, but don't know what caused it. I downloaded the boot.flp, kern1.flp and kern2.flp images and made floppies. Booted using the floppies and did the install off the burned iso images (the same ones I tried to boot with and caused the btx: halted). Installed clean.
