CD-ROM itself is read-only so clearly there needs to be an mfsroot involved in
the process. I looked at how the FreeBSD Live CD is setup and the loader.conf

mkisofs -J -R -no-emul-boot -b /boot/cdboot \
-iso-level 3 -o nanobsd.iso /mnt/image
i don't know if -J is needed (rather not), and -iso-level 3 too, but it is

I have nothing else in /dev that would indicate any new device was attached.
I know for fact the .iso is burned correctly, becaus
mount: /dev/cd0 : Invalid Argument
Can anyone shed some quick light onto the solution that I am likely
purely overlooking?

mount_cd9660 /dev/cd0 /mnt

hoping burncd or some other app can be used to do that:

So every night I just mount a blank CD and let a cron job
