Ok, so you [CTRL][ALT][BACKSPACE]-ed Xwindow. If possible, can you try a ssh from another system ? If the system is still responding, you should see it quite immediately. BTW, I had a problem not really dissimilar, except it didn't "black out" the screen. I had to upgrade Xfree from the provided
