Re: newbee to freebsd, unix, etc...

Hi Charlie,

I am presently trying to teach myself FreeBSD too and the best
HOWTO/Tutorial/Book out there for guys like us are, in my opinion, the FreeBSD
Handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/) and Greg
Lehey's The Complete FreeBSD (http://www.lemis.com/grog/Documentation/CFBSD/).

I've found the two to be very helpful.

In addition, after you're done with those, there are excellent articles
on www.onlamp.com site. For instance, the ones about ports[1] are just
amazing.

Cheers,
Mikhail.

If you configured everything properly-in terms of XWindows-and have
installed KDE, bringing up the KDE environment can simply be done using
the command startkde. You may prefer setting up more than that though,
so I suggest modifying .xinitrc and adding startkde, then invoking
startx instead.

what are some other resources for me to learn the how to do...
for example: how do i install applications.
There are a few HOWTOs out there, but you should also consult the
Handbook first...

Im pretty proficient at using microsofts windows environment.

Welcome to a Unix environment though. Things are quite a bit different here.

any help is greatly appreciated.

And help is gratefully given as long as respect is as well on the list :).

The handbook is a great resource that covers almost all aspects of
running and configuring your system. It'll be a great help. Also, if you
weren't aware, there's a user group in Tucson! I don't recall the URL
just now, but if you have trouble finding it email me and I'll help you
get in touch.
