on the FreeBSD box I get this: passwd: failed to change NIS password: RPC: Server can't decode arguments I had all the user's login shells set to /bin/bash with an appropriate symlink on the 'BSD box so they could have the same login shell on Linux FreeBSD. I had neglected to update /etc/shells
