Re: pkg problem
Upgraded to FreeBSD 9.2 from what version? If it was anything 9.x then you would not necessarily have replaced any of the ports previously installed. From 9.1 release. I see a lot of apps having newer versions. If you were upgrading from some earlier version of FreeBSD then you'ld need to reinstall all your ports with stuff compiled for 9.x. You can do that by: pkg install -f I might try -f flag. After getting txz files, I found them in /var/cache/pkg/All directory. None of them installed. So, I still have old packages. They work, but it is not what was intended. I will repeat: first I installed pkg. Then issued pkg2ng. I see no difference in db dir. I changed server address to numerical (96.47.72.120). Then I used pkg update to have it fresh. Last, pkg upgrade. It downloaded and lot more. I went further, with kernel recompile. After reboot, I see older apps, from 9.1. Ones for 9.2 are in before mentioned directory. Why does freebsd-update come into this? That's for updating the base system. It won't do anything to affect your ports directly. I'm aware of that. But, it was a step in one of manuals (or manuals). While 96.47.72.120 is the IP number of the pkgrepo test server, the recommended way to use it is via this PACKAGESITE URL: http://pkg-test.freebsd.org/pkg-test-${ABI}/latest Does not work for me. I get nothing with this line in pkg.conf. To say again, I have files on my node, but they do not install. I messed something, but cannot find out what it is. Re: ports binary upgrade question for 9.2
You don't have to recompile all ports when switching to a new _minor_ version. Minor versions are binary compatible. So in this case you don't have to do anything. Thanks for answer! I'm aware of compatibility. However, I'd like to have it all fresh, especially for luakit. I cannot find the server, to put the name in conf file for pkg. Txz packages are probably not ready yet. Further, reading manual, I assume portmaster to be happy to upgrade binary. I used it to install ports, recompiling it, due the lack of bin files for 9.1. -P should recompile only if it cannot find binary file. -PP would avoid any compiling whatever happens. To my understanding. ports binary upgrade question for 9.2
Due to trip to make, I will have to wait few days to upgrade my nodes to 9.2 release. But, I'd like to learn the easiest way to handle ports. Thanks to Matthew Seaman, I will try out txz repos, when I find the correct address for that. Otherwise, I assume portmaster might do the job equally well. Reading manual, I guess flags like -P -a or -PP -a are made to fit? Next to think would be to recompile some ports on lap- top, having intel 3000 graphics. I did it with kms lines in make.conf, for 9.1. Does it change in new release? Compiling all ports was long and tedious task and I want to avoid it now. My best bet would be to binary upgrade and recompile just what I have to. Best regards all. Yeah, Mark. You're right. Further, I'm right too. What should I install on blank node? Beta? No beta on the site. RC1-3? No RC on the site. 9.0? I need kms at least on laptop. My simple question is: what is the file on the server? Please, no only-when, no wait-for-... I'm might be ignorant in many ways, but I expect freebsd site to content what it reads as a file name. So, do I have installed 9.1 on my desktop and laptop or some alien OS? Do I have to wait more and reinstall from the beginning, when official announcement comes? Re: 9.1 minimal ram requirements
It has happened in the past that even as the release bits were propogating, One Last Big Bug was found and those bits had to be pulled and re-done. It would have looked like you had FreeBSD Release X.Y but you wouldn't have had the final bits that everyone else did. I'm aware of this. I simply did not have alternative. I understand your frustration that this process takes days, and in general the frustration with this particular release -- more than you could possibly believe. However, until we figure out the process that would exist in an ideal world, this is what we have, and so if you need something that will be in 9.1, your options at this moment are: build an install from 9-STABLE; find one of the snapshots (and no, I am not the one to ask, sorry); or wait. I'm not fond of one-size fits all principle. If an image is correct, I'll stick with it, till next treshold. At the moment, I fill relaxed, since both systems work as the best machines I had in my life. As I stated before, I could stand bugs and do not expect perfect system anytime. Freebsd suits me. If I have a problem, I wait or go around, or forget the issue. My bad was that release problem sinchronized with my power surge issue. At any other time, I'd be patient and you'd never hear of me. Sorry, but that's the best I can offer right now. Wrong. You made psychological thing and I could be not worried about state of OS. If this image differs from the final one, I do not care, if they are the same in parts that matter to me. I will upgrade at the next insert. Seeing 9.1-RELEASE instead 9.1-PRERELASE or 9.1-RC4 is also a bad suprise for me... I assume it does not look like release is the lack of packages. Simply, I installed and compiled from ports. Re: 9.1 minimal ram requirements
9.1-RC3 works just fine as well for some weeks :-) When your computers are not production machines I also recommend this to you Zoran to test RC in order to make RELEASE a better product. What you have now is labeled as RELEASE but it is a decoration. The RELEASE will be different from what you have found and installed (I think there are already versions with different tags available). This is really the thing that pushed me away from Linux :-( I removed the line and it booted just fine. To me, 9.1 is probably the best looking release, but it might be due to new hardware. I'n not aware what is going on, regarding release or release. At full speed I support the way devel team does the work. And contrary, the team has to bear with users, who want to know. I had new desktop and new laptop waiting, since power surge killed some devices at my home. And I waited for 3 months. None could say I was impatient. The release image is on the site. And, if you change RC3 to RELEASE in browser, there is even more. Why would serious guys keep those files available, if not for usage? My best guess is that some packages compile made all that fuss. People simply report success in having vertical scroll on thinkpads. Whatever I tried out, failed. Frankly, every link I found did not look similar one to another. Use moused, remove moused. Include mouse0, re- place mouse0 with touchpad0. Include VerticalScroll (or else), just let it plain. I cannot follow them all. thinkpad and synaptics
Lenovo e320, 9.1, amd64. Installed synaptics driver and tried out almost all configurations available on the net. None works. Including hw.pci.synaptics_support in loader.conf, gives psm0 in /dev. Changing InputDevice in xorg.conf simply made me mad. Like this: InputDevice Synaptics-Touchpad Corepointer Identifier Touchpad0` Driver synaptics Option Protocol psm Option Device /dev/psm0 Etc, etc. Should I add something more or I'm on a wrong path? kms problem
After successfuly installed 9.1 on desktop, I was after the same on lenovo e320 laptop. The first surprise was gpt. It failed to boot from ssd. Finally, I put parti- tions as old mbr and it was fine. Added KMS and NEW XORG and DRIVER into newly created /etc/make.conf (not existed before). Then I rebuilded the kernel, removing some staff, including all usb, and x11/xorg-minimal using portmaster. Without xorg.conf I made startx and... I had server rea- ding xinitrc, since it xsetroot the color of the back- ground and it read fvwm2rc configuration file. Nothing else. The cursor hangs in the middle of the screen. Nothing moves. I plan to make xorg.conf file first. Then to remove xmodmaprc from user directory at all. To check what it says for mouse and keyboard drivers. To add AutoAddDevices and DontZap to xorg.conf. Any idea how to puzzle off this situation? I let psm driver for mouse stay in the kernel, just as agp, since people mentioned it necessary for some stuff in kms. I will add more information if needed. WITH_KMS=YES WITH_KMS=YES WITH_KMS=yes With regard to their use in /etc/rc.conf, no, absolutely not. In general, from my experience, only the second one will work. After several years I replaced desktop and laptop and wait for release to start fresh. On desktop I put nvidia gt520. Would I trigger something if I delete agp from conf file in both cases? Another issue bothers me also. RC version of amdtemp failed to read temperatures on 8120. Re: SU+J on 9.1-RC2 ISO
Just rebooting to single user mode after the install and then tunefs -j disable /dev/ada0p2 works for me. After a reboot then I just removed /.sujournal That crystillized to me as a correct way in this situation. Just one fsck at the very beginning? Manual says about some options available after it only. Re: SU+J on 9.1-RC2 ISO
I still use 8 and plan to install branch 9 on new laptop with ssd. If journaling comes as default on 9.1, I plan to accept defaults on partitioning and use tunefs to remove it with -h disable. Any idea what steps should I take for that? As far as I read, journaling uses it's own partitions. Do I have to remove them, resize them? Branch 8 had option to choose su and j during install. I tried to find proper tutorials/manuals, but lacked to re- solve it in my head. Re: SU+J on 9.1-RC2 ISO
There's an existing checkbox to disable it. There was substantial consensus for 9.0 that SUJ was something we wanted Nice to hear. I assume you mean check box during install process? Not mentioned in install guide in handbook. So, after I accept guided partitioning, I should go to modify or else? Sorry to bother again and again, but it is not clear to me at the moment. I'd avoid further tunefs if possible. If not possible, let me clear that branch 8 has no J as default and I found myself wondering. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have to go to single user mode first. Make fsck on partition that contains freebsd-ufs ( / ). Check options for that partition with tunefs -p partition. What exact name that partition would have? Next I have to disable journaling with -j disable and enable trim with -t enable. Reboot and voila? People mention file or partition that has to be deleted. Next few days I will put ssd into laptop and manage install, when release shows up. If there is another point I have to choose for journaling, let me know. Yesterday I have gotten lenovo e320 laptop, with core i3 2350 and HD3000 integrated. Gonna wait few days till 9.1 release. I never used anything aside intel on my old laptop. Kostik Belousov made a port of kms and I found patches from june and jule on the net. What should I do after 9.1 install in this case? I assume kms is in xorg. Do I have to find and install some driver from intel? Do I need to change xorg.conf after configure flag, that will make conf file? Finally, what happens when I leave x and want to go back to console mode? I tried out live RC2 from usb stick. Few acpi errors, intel 1000 wifi found. Thanks all for respond! I'd try to mix answers and not bother you with no reason. You don't say how big your hard drive is, and if you want to run any OS besides FreeBSD. It shall be ssd drive of 64 gb. Freebsd only, as about 10 years long. You can go into the guided installer to see what it wants to do but are better off selecting partition sizes outside the guided installer. I suspect it has to go the way sysinstall takes. In fact, I never went over borders partitions made. I was able to boot the FreeBSD installer USB stick using the memstick image, and am able to boot the USB-stick FreeBSD installations I've created. I will install on ssd. Plan is not to have dvd/cd at all. UEFI worked for me during my first installation on a UEFI machine. I moved then to 10 and still have no problems. Great! Re: new desktop box
I have a GT430 installed on my machine, but I think GT520 will use less power, from specification: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-520/specifications It only needs 29W while GT430 needs 49W. NVIDIA also provides their native driver for FreeBSD. There is fanless GT520 card, not expensive. I hope it will work with nv. No real need for something more than basic graphics. What I still cannot decide is what cpu to get. I read reviews for bulldozer and find nothing thrilling. Guys are mostly gamers. On the other side, whatever i buy, gonna suffice. How about fx 8120 ? Laptop recommendations should include new models only, since older ones are not easy to find in usable condition. Also, making a go for home node, cold and quiet box, with parts fine under freebsd is not so obvious. Especially for newer graphic chips. It shows that my first idea to get cold phenom II on the integrated mobo fails on almost all parts. Yep, some kind of wiki, saying phenom to use under 8.2 to be cold and chip to find for amd mobo to take small amount of power might be... Re: dell latitude 13
Thanks for answering my question. Since the Intel chip is also still unsupported by FreeBSD, you will be limited to VEDA support which is very limited. I found that dell sells ubuntu on mentioned laptop in some parts of the globe. Further, my old laptop (HP nx9020) has intel chip and works under intel driver. I need simple 2d, no frills. Does newer chip run for plain graphics at all? No acceleration? Fine. I don't use it neither on my NVIDIA GeForce 6200 card with nv driver. For laptops you may check the following site : http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/ Old and no newer machines on the site. Also check FreeBSD Hardware lists such as ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/8.2-RELEASE/HARDWARE.HTM Intel 5100 wifi should work with device iwn5000fw or 5150? It is NOT possible to know in advance without any prior knowledge whether a computer is working with FreeDOS will work with FreeBSD because these are very different systems . It is sold with freedos to be cheap enough. I appreciate that. The producer/seller can install FreeBSD or Linux without cost Not where I live. Re: Best way to switch from Linux to BSD
I've been using Opera forever. It as an old and proven browser and it runs natively on FreeBSD. You can have the Linux flash plugin attached to it and still run the native FreeBSD version. It also supports html5. I use Conkeror on both desktop and laptop and simply cannot imagine to go back to insert_browser. Just wonna stress how my nodes run no more than 10 processes at the boot time and how that differs from whatever os I en- countered so far. As almost all posters on this topic I do not care for a dime if someone finds freebsd hard to configure to suit. It is part of the game and fun itself. Re: happy hacker lite 2 keyboard
I don't know if the original Happy Hacker keyboard is still available, it hasn't been an issue for me. :D The successor to the original HHKB were the HHKB Professional (I'm typing this on one) and now the HHKB Professional 2. Both are USB only; the Pro2 added a hub. Wikipedia has an overview of all models: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Happy_Hacking_Keyboard Professional is a bit expensive. Lite 2 is just fine to my needs. They are all usb models nowadays. Fashion, just as wide screen monitors are. My plan, when kb arrives, is to put adapter to the end of cable and connect it to ps/2 jack. Manufacturer has a wiki page, where he ponders against usb - ps/2 correction. That was the starting point for my original post. For what reason are they against? Btw, have you changed something in node configuration to match 65 key kb? How it goes in xorg.conf file in line for driver, which is kbd for ps/2 kb? I disabled hald whith those 3 lines: Section Server Flags Option DontZap off Option AllowEmptyInput off Option AutoAddDevicesfalse EndSection Best regards Zoran ___ freebsd-stable@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-stable To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-stable-unsubscr...@freebsd.org
Re: happy hacker lite 2 keyboard
Anyway, I've had really bad luck with off the shelf adapters. You are probably OK with just running it as USB. Should do if running through adapter fails. I always remove usb stack from kernel. Have to check how the change interacts with x configura- tion. Console mode asks for few lines to recog- nize kb. Re: happy hacker lite 2 keyboard
Quite late return to the subject. I finally ordered one for myself and have a question regarding it's usage with 64 bit system. All newer HH keuboards are usb ones. Manufacturer doesn't confirm connection to ps/2 port with usb to ps/2 adapter. Is there any reason not to do that on amd64? Re: happy hacker lite 2 keyboard
The Happy Hacking keyboard doesn't have a numpad. I didn't have any problems because of this, regardless of having it enabled/disabled in the BIOS. Sorry for late reply. My old keyboard has numpad part. Since hh lite 2 has it not, I simply ask for behaveor of kb with options I set. I turn off numpad support in bios first. It removes numpad and let me jump from one part of the big screen in fvwm2 to the other one. If I turn numpad on, I cannot do that. Since I never used usb keyboard, cannot comment on the other concern, hh lite 2 and booting process. dmg handling
Howdy! I got a file made on mac, sized at 142 mb and with dmg extension. It is a dump of 4 gb SD card with firmware upgrade files. File says: disk1s1.dmg: VAX COFF executable not stripped So, compressed. The file system on that original card is ext3. Linux people use dmg2img utility to decompress and then mount it with options like: mount -o loop -t hfsplus image dir If correct, I could try to bunzip2 it first, then rsync to sheevaplug node (ubuntu on it) and mount finally. The final step would be to write that ima- ge to new SD card and use it to upgrade the gadget. I was sure that simple dd would suffice, but more I read, more I see it's wrong. I also assume that I cannot write that image to smaller, 2 gb SD card. Any idea what to do in this situation? Re: mounting ext3 for rw
contrary to you, i didn't remove EXT2FS from my kernel Looking at GENERIC in 8.0, I don't see ext2 at all. Just as module. Probably could be added. Further reading and thinkering, I should be probably fine loading ext2fs module on amd64 8.0, then mounting it via: mount -t ext2fs /dev/da0s1 /storage I also found a patch for branch 7, included in 8. If suffices, I'd go no further. If something happens, I will install e2fsprogs for fsck on bsd, rather than linux. Plug is still on the way, cannot try out all the stuff. Thank you for answer. Re: mounting ext3 for rw
Late reply. Bussy week. After more reading, I changed my mind and decided to go with e2fsprogs to manage ext3 formatted usb hard drive. I still have no sheevaplug and no hdd, but I like to prepare everything and be ready for every surprise. I always recompile kernel and have no ext2fs in it. I should probably kldload ext2fs.ko first to have support. But, I still do not see the way to manage ext3 in a different way, since in the list of apps of e2fsprogs does not exist one to have it. What to do otherwise: mount -t ext2fs /dev/da0s1 /storage Or, did I misunderstand the way it works? Maybe I should not load the module and use something I'm still not aware of? mounting ext3 for rw
Hi all! I prepare to make plug music server with usb connected hard drive, formated ext3, since the system is ubuntu 9.04 as default. My rips are back-uped on spare usb disk, formated as ufs. My idea is to copy files from ufs to ext3 drive, using freebsd. I would probably enconter inode problem, since modern linuces use inode as 256, but bsd uses it as 128. I could use knoppix and format is with -I 128 flag. In ports available is e2fsprogs package with some utilities that might help. I could also take another approach and use rsync to avoid all inode puzzles. What would you recommend as the most reliable? Mounting ext3 as ext2 poses the question of making it dirty and necessity to fsck it first on linux system. Also, I found some posts of ina- bility to have the job done this way on branch 7. I have 8.0 on the laptop I write this and (if memory serves me well) 7.1 on old desktop. Re: mounting ext3 for rw
Hi all! i have been using the e2fsprogs from the ports collection since 8.0-BETA2 without any problems*, i think that it will work for you. * the partition which i mounted was a 256 one too K, I could install 8 on old box. Have you partitioned and formatted the usb drive on freebsd? Or it was done on some linux distro? Finally, after mounting, I will have to copy files to ext3 drive. Does it work also flowlessly? Since the sheevaplug could mount ext3, I have an option to either rsync or scp to it directories recursive over ethernet adapters and setting ip addresses. What do you think over this? The first is the JTAG interface to flash the bios. # cu -l cuaU1 -s 115200 Perfect! I hardly wait to get the device! When you plug the serial-over-usb in you should see something like these lines in dmesg/messages. I suspect Attos tried to connect to wrong device name, or it was on some older freebsd version? Also, there were more than one version of plug, with maybe different hardware parts. Not related to freebsd: forum posts point to error after changing root password on the plug. Someone experienced it? I see no reason to have any problem on default ubuntu 9.04 with simple passwd. Re: laptop battery on 8.0
Howdy! surely there might be a mistake in how data are parsed, but remember that the remaining time is computed based on remaining capacity and recent average current. So, if for any reason (cpu/disk/network load decreases, screensaver, etc.) the current decreases, the reported time goes up. It happens all the time with 'acpiconf -i batt' even on 7.x. My worry is could I damage the laptop with discrepance 11.1 V - 14.8 V. I could live with no life in acpi. At least, it worked correctly on all previous versions and also on 8.0 with old batery. atapicam question
Howdy! Amd64, 7.1. Few days ago I replaced dieing dvd writer with brand new pioneer 116d. In the kernel I removed all not needed stuff and included atapicam and both cd and acd. Previously I used cd only with no hiss. Making dvd I first encountered error at the very beginning of the whole process: acd: Failure - Inquiry illegal request. Using growisofs I got another errors, but nothing that made dvd unusable: failure - read_toc illegal request and failure - unknown cmd. Dvd that contained files with typos, with (, ) and ` gave me some looking for lun message du- ring the write. Not shown in /var/log/messages anyway. Since I included atapicam into the kernel and it booted fine, it works with both device drivers. I found some posts that hal could be set not to probe writer, but it is not good, for acd to read dvd. Any opinion on this topic? Maybe some growisofs bug I'm not aware of. I have an impression dvd device is not broken, aside it is new one. Re: cd ripping to flac
Thanx for reply! It won't work if you want the songs to have the right metadata; You'd have to supply that to the pipe in some way... K. I would use metaflac anyway. For ripping I use cdparanoia: 'cdparanoia -B 1' rips all tracks. I was intended to have something like: cdparanoia -B - | flac - The following perl scripts reads a text file containing the metadata (artist, album name, track data) and calls flac: - make-flac - #!/usr/bin/perl # # Compiles a list of wav files into flac files. # # Author: R.F. cd ripping to flac
Howdy! I'd like to rip my cd-s to flac files using some command line app, like cdda2wav or cdparanoia. Using pipe to flac utility would be nice and the way I'd take. What program acts in that matter? Since cdda2wav is in the base, I suppose people use it regurarly. Something like: program {options} - | flac - flac_file.flac One more thing bothers me. I cannot see songs on the cd in the way of /dev/acd0t1. I tried to stress it using cdcontrol, but no way. The kernel is customized, no sound in it, and a lot of others has gone. Now we also have terribly performing PostgreSQL on 8-core server. We noticed the slowdown after moving PostgreSQL from 2xXeon 3.0 Apache+PostgreSQL server to dedicated PostgreSQL server. I collected some stats (see attach) before moving to Linux. I'm sure that some code optimization could help to have multicore enhancement. Rapidmind example comes as proof that there is room to make things better. I saw some text on Sun compiler making code more able to use cores and get the speed. Intel also tried to do the same. Maybe the same extent of work should be put on app optimization, aside to os changes. Despite I like bsd better, must to say that linux does not sleep and wait.
