I really feel strongly that the current behaviour is bad, and should be
reverted. A new reason is: I dump statistics to a database. The database does
not have a user 'Akfaew', but 'akfaew'. I can use nickname, which remains
'akfaew', but won't

So, can this be reverted? I consider this a bug. There is no player named
'Dude'. Jacob, your nick would be displayed as 'Jtn', also incorrect, I
presume.

I couldn't find a case where the username (as specified by -n on the
command line or Login: in the client) case was munged, on a quick look. Can
you give a specific reproduction case?

Ah... right. This appears to be a temporary player (leader) name invented
during the pregame based on the connection (user) name, before a nation (and
hence leader name) is chosen.
This happens in server_player_set_name(), with the uppercasing
