copying it to a RAM disk will require 1 or 2 seconds every time you
boot this floppy.

starting this from floppy requires 1 or 2 seconds every time you use
the editor - usually less often then you use to boot this very floppy
- remember we are about editing CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT.

YMMV

of course for editing CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT some 3-10KB editor
should probably do as well.

I used e3-16 (Wordstar keys) since it was super tiny (roughly 3 kb),
but it was limited to CR+LF files and max 32 kb, which is imperfect.
But for boot disks it was great in a pinch.

Besides executable size (and license, ugh), you also have to worry
about key bindings. I also like SteVIe (a vi clone), which is quite
good in various ways. My normal favorite TDE also has a real-mode
version, but I probably wouldn't prefer that (nor even an older
version) for floppies.

You really don't want a 160 kb editor on a floppy (unless you copy it
to a RAM disk).

[Freedos-devel] clamav - remove or not remove?

2022-12-05 Thread Fritz Mueller
Hi,

as the actual FDT2212 once again has the older virus definition database (version 51, latest usable version for FD is version 54 without daily.csv) and only clamscan files on board I wonder if it makes sense to keep this "as is" , to update it or to remove it completely.

I have reported about this theme already two times, but for not reproducable reasons there is no change till now.

At: https://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/util/system/clamav/ there are three different files:

a) clamav (command line virus scanner) ca. 3 MB

b) clamdbx (database) ca. 23 MB

c) fdav ca. 700 kB

I created a newer version:

d) clamdbx 54 (database) ca. 30 MB

To make the virus checker work FD needs ca. 128 MB RAM.

As FDT2212 Bonus CD contains a) and b) with a size of 26 MB, it would not use much more space to add fdav 0.2.2 in the same folder, a GUI for virus checking.

This tool was created by Blair Dude, his website is https://sites.google.com/site/blairdude/home, there was no more activity since in about 2010.

I created an update of the ver 54 database for Jerome Shidel / FD. He told me that it has to be discussed by the FD developer group if he can

add it or not. OK. No problem, but as long as clamav with database is on the Bonus CD it makes no sense in my eyes to leave 700 kB GUI away whereas the

older database and the command line file is inside. You can discuss about the question if it makes sense to update the database for "this old OS". No problem too. But could you at least add a copy of v54 database at ibiblio so that users can decide themselve which version they want to use?

Thanks.

Fritz / Willi

FWIW, the one I use is also called TED and is an old utility from PC Magazine.
The executable is only about 3 kB (way smaller than the EDLIN that comes with
MS-DOS) and is a VERY basic text editor with a TUI (it's not a line-oriented
interface like EDLIN so is more intuitive to use). It gets the job done
efficiently for things like editing CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Re: [Freedos-devel] FreeDOS floppy edition boot disk lacks an editor?

2022-12-05 Thread Bernd Boeckmann via Freedos-devel
Hi Ralf,

thank for the advise. I have a copy of David King’s TED lying around which I
tend to use in such situations. The binary is 12KiB. In this case, the license
probably speaks against the integration.

https://texteditors.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Ted3

From a user-friendliness point of view, my personal opinion is that an editor
should be included if possible. At least regarding the 1,44M floppy edition
there is 815KB free space on the boot disk.

Greetings, Bernd
