Though that may not be as much of a problem for DOS, but OpenWatcom
would be a better choice I think.

That's fine, I'm only interested in the original Zorland/Zortech C
compiler. I already have Watcom and TurboC in my collection.

[Freedos-user] WATTCP-32 dead?

2010-05-27 Thread insert silly name here
I've been trying to find the latest sources for WATTCP-32, the protected
mode TCP/IP library for DOS. All links lead to a dead site or the wrong
16 bit DOS version.

I'd be grateful if I could be pointed in the right direction. Many
thanks!

[Freedos-user] First time user for Freeedos- can I run PCNFS?

2010-05-27 Thread Tony Cappellini
I am currently loading PCNFS drivers under MSDOS.
With everything loaded high (as much as possible) I am left with only 462K
bytes let for applications.

This isn't enough for what I need to do. If I don't load the PCNFS stuff, I
can run the application just fine, but then I don't have
access to our network.

Will Freedos work with PCNFS drivers?
Will I have more than 462K available after loading everything?

What NICS are supported by Freedos ethernet drivers?

thanks

[Freedos-user] updated DOSUTILS (agin)

2010-05-27 Thread Willi Wasser
Oops, i wasn't aware that my e-mail provider will silently send all mail as
HTML attachment. So i now try it again, hoping that it will be sent as plain
ascii this time. Here it comes . . .

 Hello everybody,

I just want to announce that a new version of my DOSUTILS package is available.
It is a collection of utilities which can help in writing batch procedures
under true MS-DOS (or any other flavour of DOS) and can be downloaded from
http://www.bttr-software.de/products/jhoffmann/ together with the following
three other packages:

- ETHTOOL a set of utilities for ethernet network analysis,
- NTOOL an incarnation of netcat, also known as the swiss army knife of
TCP/IP networking and
- RMENU which is kind of a telnet server for (MS-)DOS.

All these programs may or may not be useful to you, but you will only know that
for shure, if you try them and see yourself. Needless to say, that i still
apreciate feed-back.

Ahhh... 17-18Y ago, DOS memory optimisation by hand was one of my
particular tricks. I was quite the expert. Completely obsolete skill
now, though.

My suggestion would be to find a copy of QEMM386 and run Quarterdeck's
OPTIMIZE on your system. It did turn your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
files into something rather spaghetti-like, but it wrung out every
last byte of free RAM. I suspect you might get further with that than
with FreeDOS, although I could be wrong...

Why use qemm86? Doesn't freedos have a newer/better **emm86?
JEMM386

People where i work have already tried to optimize memory for the
project I've mentioned- and that's how we got to 462K :-)
EMM386 (MSDOS) hangs when I load it- dont know why.

If I can load more stuff high using Freedos all its memory
management then that's a better solution.
I need to hear from the Freedos netowrk driver wizards.

thanks

This really depends on how much ram you have free in the upper memory
block. Usually this would be 128k at the most. I can do a lot with that.
I spent ages looking for the smallest functional drivers I could get
away with. For example, BENQ.SYS is about 5k and I use it a lot with CD
ROM drives using MSCDEX.EXE.

I find that if you use the tiniest device drivers available, you can put
a lot into these upper memory blocks!

Re: [Freedos-user] Zorland/Zortech C compiler?

2010-05-27 Thread Martin Woodhouse
Hi Conan

That wouldn't be Borland C, would it? I built an entire e-book
writing-reading-publishing suite for DOS using Borland C in 1989-91

Cheers

Martwww.martin-woodhouse.co.uk

From: Conan Kudo
I was wondering if anyone knows more than there is on wikipedia? I'd be
interested in finding out more about that compiler and most importantly
if anyone's still got the binaries stored safely. I think that this
could be an important thing in the history of early C compilers that
included TurboC and its ilk.

I seem to remember writing a disk editor with Zorland C, would have to
be during the late 1990s. I still have the sources for that but can't
find the compiler that I originally used to write it.

Many thanks!

Re: [Freedos-user] Zorland/Zortech C compiler?

No, that wouldn't.

As already mentioned, the compiler he is looking for is now called
Digital Mars C/C++ and is available as freeware for download from
the author's (Walter Bright) web site at www.digitalmars.com . The
compiler was called in the past (in order of appearance)

Northwest Software C
Datalight C
Zorland C
Zortech C (after a nudge from Borland apparently)
Zortech C++
Symantec C++ (after selling the rights to Symantec)
Digital Mars C++ (after Walter got the rights back from Symantec)

And unfortunately, the compiler that can be downloaded nowadays does
not run under 16 bit DOS as I previously mentioned, I was used to run
it on the command line of a Windows 98 machine. Though it is capable
of producing 16 bit DOS executables, it is a Win32 console program...

So the only still available 16 bit C compiler that still runs on 16
bit DOS is DeSmet C 3.1 (which is now Open Source)...

I personally prefer Borlands C/C++ 3.1 myself, it's still after all
those years the most usable DOS C/C++ compiler that still runs on 16
bit DOS, though unfortunately, only the older version of Turbo C++
1.01 is available from Borland's/Imprise's/Codegear's/Embaradero's
museums page as freeware (not Open Source). But still good enough if
you in fact want to write real DOS programs...
