I assume you are referring to 1.3 Final and not RC5, RC4, etc. 

Like FreeDOS 1.3, the primary installer can only run from CD/USB and requires a 
386+. 

The Floppy Edition requires only a 8086 with EGA or better graphics. The 
support for lesser video cards is planned to eventually remove the EGA 
requirement. That requirement for EGA would/should not cause an invalid 
op-code. However, more information is required to determine what the cause of 
the problem you are experiencing with the Floppy Edition.

The install process for 1.2 requires either a CD-ROM or USB. Therefore uses 
some tools that require a 386 or better. Only a manual installation performed 
by hand was possible on sub-386 machines with that release.

[Freedos-user] 286 Installation on CF Card

Hi,

I am trying to install Freedos 1.2 or 1.3 on a 286 with a CF card.
Unfortunately, I don't have a floppy disk drive on my Win10 PC, so I
make the detour via this trick:

However, with 1.3 I get a strange error message: this installation is
only suitable for 80386 or higher. The installation via the floppy disk
version also failed despite "setup 286" as option.
With version 1.2, at some point during the boot process, a message
regarding incorrect opcode is displayed and the lines scroll through.

The 286 boots from an old DOS boot disk with Freedos ~ 1.13 without any
problems.
