Re: [Freedos-user] Easy GUI desktop enviroment install

2016-02-01 Thread lee jones
On the subject of freedos and dos-bases gui's in general did a bit of
thinking here. Managed to come up with 3 ideas though I am not sure
how useful they might be as I guess they aren't really "dos shells" to
be precise. But anway;

Firstly ages ago there was an emulator called tosbox which is an atari
ST emulator. It runs in dos but has two intresting features - firstly
from what I remember it can access dos files directly (so they show
up) but it also ran quickly on old hardware -- even an old pentium 75
could run it quickly. Though it does need an atari st rom file.
Development has long since stopped but I found a copy of the emulator
here --

http://www.zophar.net/atarist/tosbox.html

Next one is a website I found which contains a "free" version of
windows. But by "free" I am meaning that it is a demo version. It is
also a very old version of windows, 3.0 . Other programs can run on it
apparently but only by modifiying a programs' exe header/descriptor
file (not sure how to do this) and inserting "DEMOAPP" in it
someplace.

Last one while I think of it and I guess it really isn't quite the
right thing but there used to be an emulator (which again ran fairly
quickly) called "executor" which could run old 68k mac apps. Though
strangely it did not require the mac system disks, and neither did it
need a mac rom image -!

Unfortunatly executor has long since dropped off the internet as has
the company ardi which created it (and I think the company is possibly
defunct nowadays, not sure). Though I managed to dig up a dos version
of executor and uploaded it here:

http://slothpuck.no-ip.org/executor/dos/execdos.zip

it will ask for a authentication key and serial number once run but
looking through the wayback engine/internet archive I found a
non-expiring key/ser. number here:

https://web.archive.org/web/20120723153826/http://www.ardi.com/win_download.php

apparently executor development (according to wikipedia) ended in
2005, and in 2008 became open source. Still have a few linux sources
as well;

http://slothpuck.no-ip.org/executor/linux/

(I did once try to compile these but with no luck).

Thats all I can think of!

Re: [Freedos-user] Boot floppy image files

2012-09-16 Thread lee jones
not sure if it helps but I made this bootdisk a while back;

http://spfiles.no-ip.org/dos_bootdisk.img

I use this with an emulator called PCE which emulates an old 8086 based PC.

Wow. I imagined that it would be a little easier than this.

While I understand that FreeDOS is a modern DOS not meant just for
older hardware, I thought that one of the purposes for FreeDOS was to
make older hardware relevant again. From the looks of it, I can't see
any reasonable way to get FreeDOS working on an old machine that has no
OS currently on it.

Just hang in there, not all people are just ignoring problems like this...

2007-04-21 Thread Lee Jones

  Hi!

What version of MPlayer is the most willing to go on DOS?

 I downloaded

 http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer/builds/mplayer-p4-svn-22870.7z

 from

 http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php

 which worked (on a P4).

Which DLL's have I to steal from Windows?

 It's opengl32.dll and glu32.dll (from win9x or winme)

 To launch it I entered:

 dpmild32 -g mplayer -vo gl -ao win32 file.mpg xxx

 Additional:

 - a SB16 compatible sound card is required for sound
 - one might have to patch opengl32.dll, see hx\unsupp\patchogl.txt.

The patch is no longer necessary with the files found at
http://www.japheth.de/Download/hxrtd.zip, but these files are unstable.

I tried it too again with those files, but get lots of errors with any
video file, such as

Option_mv0_threshold needs a parameter at line 1
Option possibly needs a parameter at line 2

The hxrtd.zip file mentioned above also seems to have something wrong
with it, the 'ole32.dll' file has a file size of 0 bytes!

[Freedos-user] Mplayer, dos freedos?

2007-04-19 Thread Lee Jones
Evening all! :)

While poking about on the internet I turned up this link regarding
someone who has managed to get a version of mplaye running in dr-dos;

http://www.drdosprojects.de/forum/drp_forum/posts/3910.html

Is this even possible? Wouldn't it need a million .dll's from windows x.x ?

[Freedos-user] Long pathnames in freedos

2007-04-14 Thread Lee Jones
Hello all,

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a long path name in
freedos at all? The reason I'm trying to do this is I'm making a small
install of freedos onto a partition of my HD here. I'm trying to put
some of the programs, drivers, etc. into their own
directories/subdirectories and then using the freedos path command to
hook it all together, but my path is too long! Here's what it looks
like so far;

C:\fdos\root\base
C:\fdos\root\drv\usb
c:\fdos\root\drv\ansi
c:\fdos\root\drv\kybd
c:\fdos\root\drv\ansi
c:\fdos\root\drv\cdrom
c:\fdos\root\drv\memory
c:\fdos\root\drv\mouse
c:\fdos\root\drv\audio
c:\fdos\root\drv\video
c:\fdos\root\apps\devel\djgpp
c:\fdos\root\apps\devel\lua
c:\fdos\root\apps\cmpress
c:\fdos\root\apps\cdrw
c:\fdos\root\apps\jpeg
c:\fdos\root\apps\maths
c:\fdos\root\apps\www
c:\fdos\root\apps\gem\gemapps\gemsys

(normally this is all on 1 line and seperated by ; 's ) .

freedos' path can't take this x.x but I was wondering if a dos-based
version of BASH could? Unfortunatly I could only find an ancient
version of bash for dos, version 2.05 was the newest.

Thanks for any help

Re: [Freedos-user] Long pathnames in freedos

2007-04-14 Thread Lee Jones
On 4/14/07, Eric Auer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi Lee,

actually your PATH -can- be very long, but the length
of each line in your autoexec is limited. You could do sth like

 set path=C:\fdos\root\base
 set path=%path%;C:\fdos\root\drv\usb
 set path=%path%;c:\fdos\root\drv\ansi

You would also have to tell command.com to reserve lots of
space for env vars (E option in config sys SHELL... line).

Plus of course the long path will also make searching for
binaries very slow. Remember that BASH stores a hashtable
of all binary paths found so far (sometimes forcing you to
type rehash when you rename executables), while command.com
just looks at all directories in the path each time.

A more efficient way would be to put the binaries in
fewer directories and/or put batch files there (or
alias definitions in autoexec) to point to where
 you have your binaries now.

 Eric

PS: I remastered fdbasecd to make a new 8 MB ISO which now
boots even on my PC. If anybody wants a copy, let me know.

It almost worked but I got a lot of this message;

Commandline longer than 125 characters

I looked at some of the options for command.com such as /U and /L (/E
worked) but I got an error saying Not implemented yet

[Freedos-user] Lua for freedos?

Hi,

Does anyone know of a version of Lua for freedos? Unfortunatly I've
only found a binary for version 4, I am looking for a binary for the
newer version 5.1.1. If there is no binary can lua be compiled in
freedos? Thanks
