I need to bulk insert a bunch of users, and i need to create them with
certain gid's but i dont see where i can do that using the cli. Are
there any pointers here?

There is currently not a way to directly set the user's gidnumber
other than the default group for all users (currently ipausers).
Can you provide more details on what your requirements are?
I should add that we're investigating adding support for user private
groups.

I have seemingly followed the howto on getting this running and i have
made the changes required as noted in about:config but i do not seem to
be able to get to the GUI admin screen. No matter what i seem to do all
i am presented with is 'Kerberos Authentication Failed'

This is IPA v1.2 I gather? Try looking in /var/log/ipa_error.log, that
is the UI log.
In V1 we use TurboGears to create the UI pages. Apache handles the
authentication using mod_auth_kerb and once the user is authenticated
mod_proxy sends the request to the TurboGears process (ipa_webgui).
Can i ask what the future of (free-)IPA is please - I am very keen to get it
in the door here and i thought that it was being actively but i have heard
that there are no full time developers working on this at RH. Is this a
product thats going to go away or is it something that is worth us investin
