First strange thing: "-a 16" results in 16 bit color depth session, "-a
24" creates 16 bit session, too (why?) -"-a 32" creates a 32 bit session
(all against 2008 R2 SP1 server, xfreerdp git clone).
Second strange thing: Session created with-a 16 or -a 24 can be remote
controlled from Windows X

I am using FreeRDP client on Windows. I am able to remote to Windows XP
machine but when I try to do remote to Windows 7, I get the error
Windows 7 machine is part of the WORKGROUP and there is no active
directory.

Off the top of my head, I'd guess that there is a problem with the
interactive password prompt for NLA. Windows XP does not support
server-side NLA, but in your case Windows 7 probably enforces it.
