Since the last release of freesurfer 5.X in 2014, the encryption
libraries on linux systems have changed such that the licenses downloaded for
the current 7.X
releases,https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/fswiki/rel7downloads- cannot work
with 5.X.

Hi all,
I've downloaded Freesurfer version 5.3 and signed up for a license. However,
when I try to run the example:
mri_convert sample-001.mgz sample-001.nii.gz
I get the following error:
ERROR: Invalid FreeSurfer license key found in license file
Thanks Lunhao, I will follow up with you temporarily off-list to test some
things out.

Where did you place the license file you obtained? From the output of that
program which at some point calls `mri_convert`, it seems that it is working
with 2 different FreeSurfer versions in different paths:

Dear FreeSurfer experts,
I'm trying to convert FreeSurfer surfaces to afni format.

Solved: The license file actually differed from the other installations in

took a second pair of eyes to notice this. I thought I'd fess up lest

I wanted to bump this:
I have license errors with FS 5.3 that don't appear for
equivalently-configured FS 5.1 and FS 4.5 installations. How shall I
troubleshoot?
SYMPTOMS:
$ mri_convert $FREESURFER_HOME/subjects/bert/mri/T1.mgz T1.mgz
mri_convert
/space/opt/freesurfer-Linux-centos4_x86_64-stable
I see some reports of license failures, and seem to be having a similar
problem. Our installations of 4.5 and 5.1 work normally, but with 5.3 I had
a mysterious error in unpacksdcmdir that ultimately traced to a license
error in mri_convert. I can reproduce the error like so:
*mri_convert $FREESUR
Hi Nooshin
you should post this type of question to the list so others can answer. Are
you sure that the file /Users/nzadeh/freesurfer/.license exists?
