found:
1. Lirc for this does work, but you have to get the cvs snapshot version ( i

2. When setting up lirc use the settings for other / linux input
I found my problem. I had used the example for MAME from freevo_conf.py.
The example has a -fullscreen option. I've learned this is not a valid option
for xmame. I instead needed to use -x11 3 for fullscreen.
I am up and running. Thought I'd post my answer for others.
