I found my problem. I had used the example for MAME from freevo_conf.py. The example has a -fullscreen option. I've learned this is not a valid option for xmame. I instead needed to use -x11 3 for fullscreen. I am up and running. Thought I'd post my answer for others. Jim Jim Duda wrote
