Blame Microsoft for that. At least Flip4Mac covers the majority, but
it's proprietary, so Perian doesn't cover it.

Niceplayer gets a mention, but it's not a Quicktime plugin like Perian. One
would imagine that if Perian doesn't work under mountain lion, then all the
'Open with' preferences will need to be altered.
However, it also plays DVD's.
