OS 10.5
I would like to purchase Mac OS 10.5 for my iMac Intel Duo currently running OS 10.4.11. Where can I purchase one and what would be a good price to pay? What should I beware of in the way of copies and scams? I have two GB's of memory and a one terra byte hard drive with a lot of free space (898.46 GB). eMac problems
A couple weeks ago I bought a second hand eMac (1GHz ATI graphics) at a local store. I currently runs Os 10.3.9 and came with only 128Mb of RAM and a expired PRAM battery. I bought two 512Mb sticks and a fresh battery from OWC and now runs much better. I also purchased an AirPort Extreme wireless card from eBay. These are my problems: * Panther is pretty obsolete now. I own an original retail Tiger installation disk, but when I try to install it it asks me for the admin password. I have no idea of what the password is and the store have no idea either. * I can`t get the computer to recognize the AirPort Extreme card. Is there a way I can make a fresh install of the OS? You can boot from the Tiger DVD (assuming your eMac has at least a Combo drive) to install 10.4. You also can boot from that disc to change the password. But if you're going to do a clean install, all you have to do is hold down the Option key while the eMac boots with the disc in the drive, then select the OS X install disc. That gets around the issue of trying to install while booted into 10.3.9. As for the Airport Extreme card, make sure you have installed it properly. The Airport Extreme label should be facing down, with the antenna port on the right side. Make sure the antenna connector is fully seated in the port. Re: eMac problems
Thanks a lot for your quick answers! I tried booting from the DVD while keeping C and option down but without luck. When booting with option down, the DVD drive (it`s a combo one) doesn`t recognize the boot DVD. Same with booting with C pressed, it doesn`t boot from the DVD. It`s an old one, maybe it can be damaged? I think I have a Panther disk somewhere else to try On the AirPort Extreme, I followed the eMac manual (PDF from everymac.com) instructions and noted you had to push a little bit more to get rhe card properly seated, but no luck. I have a PowerMac G4 FW 800 loaned to a friend so I can try the card there. Thanks! I've lost count of the number of optical drives in G4 eMacs and iMacs that have lost the ability to read DVDs or CDs, and sometimes both. In other cases, the drives will read factory DVDs and/or CDs, but not burned ones. Don't even ask me about DL/dual layer so-called SuperDrives. Or in your case, the Tiger DVD may be damaged. Do other CDs and DVDs mount on the desktop? On the Airport Extreme, are you sure that one or more pins haven't been bent? Good idea to try the card in another machine. Good luck! Re: OS 10.5
Wow, that's quite the difference, why is SL so much cheaper than Leo? Apple has revised its MacOS X marketing strategy several times. 10.5 cost way, way more than 10.6. 10.7 non-server cost the same as 10.6 non-server. The 10.7 server option costs only $50, which is about one-fifth the cost of 10.6 Server. Given the realities of the marketplace, you always want to go with the latest, because it is best, and it is also at the same or much lower cost. I own a license to 10.3 server and 10.5 server (unlimited clients). I avoided 10.6 server on account of cost (I only run the server version on a PPC, anyway), but I intend to buy 10.7 server (and to run it on an Intel Hackintosh). -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Yes, there's that. But it is also because Apple has always charged ~$30 for Snow Leopard. Why? Who knows? In any case, the asking price is not going to be (much) more than what Apple is selling it for. (I believe Apple is still selling SL. After all, how else can someone upgrade to Lion if they have Leopard? They have to first install SL and update it so they can then use the app store to then install Lion, no?) It seems to me that Apple was more concerned with promoting the adoption of Snow Leopard ... and now Lion ... then they were with generating revenue per se from the release. Why is Apple giving an extra monetary incentive to encourage people to adopt its latest versions of OS X? Moribund G4 iBook - and will the DVD drive fit in my MacBook?
I've been given an iBook G4 to look at. This was apparently working fine then 'died'. It is a 1.2GHz, with 256MB memory, 80GB hd and combo drive. When turned on there is no 'bong', and no illumination of the display (although when I tried it yesterday after removing the battery for 24 hours (saw this recommended on another forum!), there was background illumination visible (a lighter shade of dark grey!), but on turning off and starting again, the display again showed no sign of life. The battery seems to charge OK I tried resetting PRAM - but presumably since it doesn't POST and bong, it wouldn't recognise the keystrokes. It won't go into Target Disk Mode, presumably for the same reason. The caps lock LED illuminates, but I imagine that's just showing that the keyboard is getting power. Just for the heck of it I plugged my first gen iPod in to see if the OSX on there would kick start it. Also I plugged an external monitor in, and no video apparent on that. I'm kind of assuming that the logic board has just fallen over and died for whatever reason. A shame because the machine is in very nice condition - indeed a lot better than my very scruffy mid 2007 MacBook, which I got for a very good price due to the optical drive being dead! I use external FW drives with the MacBook, but does anyone know if the optical drive from the iBook is physically and electronically compatible with the MacBook one? I know I could just by a new optical but I'm a guy who likes recycling where possible. Look forward to all comments and suggestions. I'm kind of assuming that the logic board has just fallen over and died for whatever reason. Try an Open Firmware set immediately after pushing the power button: Hold down Command, Option, O and F (you may need to wait a good long while for the grey screen to come up). Whether the grey OF screen comes up or not, after a reasonable wait, type these three lines, hitting Return at the end of each: set-defaults (return) reset-nvram (return) reset-all (return) After the third Return, the iBook may well chime and restart. If not, try the same procedure while putting some pressure on the case in the lower left corner of the keyboard (to see the video chip has broken solder joints). If after several attempts the screen doesn't light up or you get no chime, yep, the logic board's toast. But if you get a chime and hear hard drive activity, you may be looking at a broken LVDS or inverter cable, so wiggle the screen open and closed to see if that gets anything going.
