Now, good news: Two DIMMs were defective - The Mac would not sleep and
wake properly with two of them. (all 512 MB DIMMs)
One is fine! Thank goodness!
The USB card also caused the problem.

I also have excess G4 desktops, one of which is as new! That one in
particular was purchased new as a back-up system, but was never really used
