Re: rich text problem

2011-03-19 Thread Sean Carroll
My apologies for being stupid(er than usual). I see that Mail indeed
offers message viewing control under PreferencesFonts Colors
(set it so long ago I forgot where it was), and I am undoubtedly
quite mistaken - memory fails me - that Outlook Express offered
anything more under OS 9. Still:

A bit odd that Mail doesn't directly offer the option to view all
messages as plain text. As far as I can tell.

If Mail (or any installed email client) can disregard and override
font and type size HTML tags, theoretically it must be possible for
it to be instructed to recognize some HTML tags and not recognize
others. Evidently there's no market for such customization options,
as I'd guess most people are as ambivalent as I about overdone HTML
in email and that creators of email applications have no interest in
something that defeats the trend toward snazzier-looking and more
personalized (or more marketing-friendly) email.

I haven't tried it but. . . .
defaults write is a command to be executed in terminal.app

And you might want to try:
defaults read com.apple.mail PreferPlainText
Which is a bit safer before you actually change the preference.

At 11:31 -0700 3/17/11, Bruce Johnson answered another:
I use Mail in 10.6 but I have it set to display rich text. Now I see why
 it's hated.

Do this:

Quit Mail.
Open terminal, and enter the following:

defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText -bool TRUE

Start Mail again.

If you ever want to see the rich text version of any message merely press
option-command-]; it'll then show the next alternative, which usually suffices
to show the 'rich' version of any message.

The problem isn't in the receiving end, it's in the creation end.

You'll need to go to MailPreferenceComposing TabComposing:Message
Format: and select the Plain Text field. Alternatively, you can
individually toggle each composed email using Shift-Cmd-T or by
selected from the Mail menu bar under the FormatMake Plain Text/Rich
Text toggle selection.

As far as viewing, there isn't a simple way to reformat Rich Text as
Plain Text, so you'd often end up with a gobbledygook message.

Re: importing iphoto files.

2011-03-19 Thread jason
I did manage to somewhat successfully transfer the files over
firewire. I had the pismo in target disk mode and it transferred the
6.5 gb worth of pictures, however, some pictures were psychedelic
colors, and some were missing. And I got the same popup box (as noted
in the original post above) that told me that the files could not be
imported--even though they were right there in front of me.
I deleted the files from the iphoto 6 library, and started over
again. Only this time, I got the spinning wheel, and nothing
transferred over even after leaving it on overnight.

I'm flummoxed.

Mail Archiving

2011-03-19 Thread Judith Berkowitz
I use the Mac Mail Client Version 2.1.3
on my Late 2005 12 iBook
OS X 10.4.11
1.33 GHz
1 GB Ram

Right around now each year I make two new folders On My Mac, this
year they're called 2010 Inbox and 2010 Sent.
I then manually slide about 200 posts at a time from the previous year
from the current Inbox and Sent mail into these respective folders.
If I highlight more, the process usually chokes.

Surely there is a simpler, and perhaps automated, way to get all the
old mail out of the current Inbox, yet still keep it around!

Thanks!

I don't think you're going about this the right way. It appears you're
trying to Import the old iPhoto library, and I believe the problem
here is that you've skipped too many versions of iPhoto in trying to
go from iPhoto 3 to iPhoto 6 directly without the intervening versions
5 6. I could be wrong, but it seems likely because iPhoto changed a
lot between these versions.

As I have said before, I believe the easist way to do what you're
trying to do is manually navigate to the originals folder on the
Pismo while the Pismo is mounted in Target Disk mode, and then drag
drop the entire originals folder into the open iPhoto 6 application
window so that they will be automatically imported. The problem with
this method is that you will lose all of the editing changes you've
made to any photos, but the advantage is that it should work
seamlessly, giving you 100% of the original photos from the Pismo.

If you have done extensive editing to the Pismo photos it would be a
better idea to figure out the correct way to import the library WITH
editing changes intact. I don't believe G3-5 list is the optimal place
to be asking this question, you'd likely be better served on the Apple
DiscussionsiLifeiPhoto section here:

AFAIK the Mac clones were a much wanted machine because they were more
affordable with extra features. I still have a trusty Power Computing clone
that runs every day, OS9 of coarse. :-) I can see Apple keeping the system

Replace the pram. They aren't expensive, or difficult to replace, and most
likely is causing all your problems. Repairing the permissions is always a
 good idea to.

Losing time is almost always the PRAM battery.

They are nominally 3.6 volts, but brand new ones will usually measure 3.68
volts, and will stay that way possibly for years.

These batteries are essentially DEAD when the voltage measures 3.2 volts,
or below.

Some Macs will work with the battery as low as 3.0 volts, but that is
never guaranteed.

Losing your WiFi can also be due to a weak link to your router.

If/when the link is weak, the connection will be refused, and you may be
asked to re-submit your WPA parameters, even if those are already in your
keychain.

It is possible for the link to be detected, but then it is too weak to go
through the authentication process, which requires that your keychain info
matches the router info.
