A cheaper and simpler solution would be to get a USB 802.11g or better still,
an 802.11n dongle. The software is a pain in the rear but once you get it up
and running on a desktop machine it shouldn't matter.

g and n each improved the distance the signal carries.

PCI-X is on "Early 2005" and before (some early G5 are PCI only).
PCIe is on "Late 2005" only, the final G5 version.

If it's running OS X *any* ATA drive will work, there are a lot available for
$20 and up.

If you're using 10.4 or below, you may have to install Patchburn for it to be
fully supported, in 10.5 any drive that met the standards works.

G'day

A lot of current discs state an 8x or 16x rating, but EVERY one can be burnt at
a lower rate; in fact if your'e having reliability problems, it actually can
help to burn at a lower speed.

The main factor in faulty disc burning is the manufacturer. I personally use
Verbatim DVD-R's, and have burnt a stack of 100 discs without a single fail,
using a superdrive on an intel iMac.

Google 'what is the best DVD-R brand' for lots of useful information.

No, the drive is the limitation on this issue, althoug it should support
burning at the lower speed on the higher-speed disks. The rating of the disk is
the maximum supported speed; they should also work at all lower speeds on down
to 1x. Are oyu positive they're the right flavor of disk (ie: DVD-R, not DVD+R

NO it's not. IIRC, (and you should be able to check this on Apple's stats
database) these were a 4X burner.

MOre than likely none...16X drives postdate OS 9, I believe.

No, because there is no SATA support for OS 9.

The answer to ALL of your problems is simple: Update to OS X 10.4 or 10.5.
Under OS X the new drive WILL be recognized, if not natively then through
PatchBurn.

Cloning will be fine. OSX just looks up the hardware ID of whatever machine
it's booting from at the time so as long as the machine hardware ID predates
that release. OSX is much, much better behaved about that sort of thing than
Windows is. The only reason to install again from scratch would be if you just
wanted to have a completely clean, new, virgin system - if you're happy with
the old one then there's no point to choose that over cloning.

(Incidentally, the DP 2.7GHz AGP does actually have PCI-X. PCI-X and PCI
Express (PCIe) are two different things.)

Re: Geforce 7800 locks up

2011-09-29 Thread QuoVadis
Chrales,

I too am surprised the G4 even boots without taping over any pins. I'd
strongly suggest (like other before me) to tape over pins 3 & 11. The
Mac Wiki has a step-by-step guide to do so and it is not difficult to
do. I myself have recently installed a Geforce FX5500 inro my G4 QS
(933MHz) which is technically the same machine you have. It didn't
boot without modification!

The reason I suggest this, is the fact that the 28 volts are supplied
to the card and they seem to 'dissipate' somewhere as your Mac boots
and works (for a while). Maybe the rogue 28 volts are causing the lock-
ups!

Greetings,

Eelco.

That and it's a great way to get out of having to give any tech support to
ageing PowerPC machines after you've got their owner's money. It's just a
slightly finer chopped version of that age-old cry of "no Mac support" when the
product actually works fine on Macs but they don't want to have to train more

16x DVD burning in PowerMac G4

2011-09-29 Thread Tanner M
I believe that I've asked about this before, but never did get the answer I was
looking for…
First off, system specs.

867Mhz G4 Quicksilver
Running OS 9.2.2 only
NO OSX!!

I bought 16x dvd discs to burn some home movies. My Apple SuperDrive supported
dvd burning but only, apparently, up to 8x and couldn't recognize 16x DVDs. I
replaced the drive with an LG drive, but it didn't support apple software
burning so I couldn't even open iDVD. My questions are:

1. Is the ATA bus too slow to writer 16x with the Apple SuperDrive? If so, are
there any possible ways to get faster bus (I.E. 80 pin cables?)
2. Is the Apple SuperDrive not capable of burning 16x?
3. What respectable drive does support Apple Software burning(in OS 9 and 16x
speed)?
4. If IDE is not fast enough for 16x burning, is there a SATA drive hooked up
to a SATA PCI card that will still support Apple Software burning?

Thanks for your time!

P.S. please people, don't stray from the topic or hijack the thread. Thankyou

Poor Airport reception

2011-09-29 Thread QuoVadis
Hi all!

I've recently acquired an Airport card to fit inside my G4 QS (the
2002 model). It works fine, meaning it connects to the Extreme base
station and gets me on the internet.

The problem is the reception: I have my Airport Extreme base station
set up on the second of 3 floors. My eMac on the third floor has full
reception (meaning all the bars on the Airport-icon in the taskbar are
lit) while the G4 has only one or two bars lit (mostly two).
Furthermore, network transfers are slow (maximum download speed is
around 300k/s and copying 500MB takes about half an hour). I realize
that the card is in fact an 11mBit card, but it should (theoretically)
reach close to 1.1 MB/s.

I've checked the antenna so far, which is connected properly. Only
thing I can try is to see if my G4 GE has the same problem when I swap
the Airport card. Maybe the antenna has fractured internally (I hope
not).

The G4 is placed adjecent to an amplifier, CD player, AM/FM tuner and
turntable. A LCD TV is also closeby (being the monitor for the G4) as
is a 1/4" tape recorder. Just mentioning it, because it's a lot of
steel/aluminium and electriciy to interfere with the signal.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Greetings,

Eelco.

2011-09-29 Thread Gene Henley
I bought a g4 from ebay with Tiger upgraded.
I want to upgrade to 9.2.2 free from internet

have classic capability.
Thanks Gene

Re: 10.3 doesn’t see newer HD?

2011-09-29 Thread Justin Porterfield
It sounds like you have the right idea but your implementation is backwards.
You want to put the iBook into target disk mode, plug a Firewire cable into
it and the G4, then boot the G4 off of the install DVD. The iBook's drive
should be listed as an drive option to install to.

Re: 10.3 doesn’t see newer HD?

2011-09-29 Thread QuoVadis
I think you should try the external HD. I've had my Power Macs G4
linked via Firewire and TDM, with a disc in the drive. The disc didn't
show, the HDD did.

I've searched some on the net and it appears that support for optical
drives in TDM depends on the model of Macintosh you use as the target
machine. It didn't state the models that do or don't support opticals
in TDM.

A Google search finds others complaining about similar problem
mostly, it seems, with IMAP accounts.

I found a solution by deleting and recreating the specific POP
account.
