Never heard of this problem, but you can probably fix it with either a  
Safe Boot or by reinstalling the 10.4.11 PPC Combo Update.

My Mac OS 10.4.11 e-mail application has somehow become corrupted (?) so that 
whenever I click on a link in the text the Internet Connect screen comes up. 
Apple forums has not come up with an answer or even anyone who has experienced 
this problem. Anyone know anything about this?

The 6280M (any variation) is a non-RAID adapter with Mac firmware (known
to work with PPC Macs ... most likely won't work with Intel Macs).

The 6880M (any variation) is a RAID adapter with Mac firmware (same
comments as above).

Unlike Promise and many others which licensed their Mac firmware from
Firmtek, ACARD develops its own Mac firmware, which probably explains why
they were so soon to come out with LBA48 support in their own adapters,
whereas others came rather late to the LBA48 support scene.

The $30 card from eBay (a Hong Kong seller, IIRC) is a PCI card which is
at home in a G-series Mac as these have the longer slot which this card
requires.

One internal UATA 100/133 port (supports LBA48 and two drives) and one
on-card space which accepts any ATA 2.5" drive (both mounting formats, the
early one and the present one). Drive power from the PCI bus.

This is the 6280MD, where the D suffix indicates support for an on-card
2.5" hard drive.

As usual, the attached drives are made to appear as SCSI by the ACARD
firmware.

Different item.   Peter referred to SCSI/IDE adapter.   That is an
adapter into which you plug your SCSI cable at one  end and an IDE
drive at the other end.  Acard's price on the AEC-7720U is $249.

You're looking at a card which plugs into a PCI slot and provides ATA/
IDE interfaces for drives.   Those, the 6280M and the 6880M are
sometimes available on Ebay for about $30 - $50.   The 6880M is like
the 6280M, except that it supports RAID 0 and RAID 1.

If you have a machine with PCI slots and one available, that's a much
better choice than a SCSI/IDE adapter, but there are situations in
which the SCSI/IDE adapter is the only usable choice -- although
mostly not on topic for this particular discussion group; i.e. pre -
PCI Macs.

Most computers run hotter in the middle of the summer, too.

Also, if something in the room has changed to make it quieter...the computer 
sounds louder.

What type of noise?  Do you mean a bearing problem (grinding or 
ticking sounds) or is it just running faster?


If the former, clean the fan.  If it persists, replace it.

If the latter, ... when does it run faster and what's the ambient 
room temp?  If it runs faster all the time, then try resetting the 
power manager after replacing the pram battery.  If the speed ramps 
up and down, like it should, but just seems to end up being faster, 
then figure out what's causing the heat.  Sometimes HDs run xtra hot 
before the gak.  Sometimes CPUs run extra hot if their thermal paste 
has broken down...  Applets such as iStat Menus have menu bar display 
gizmos for the temps.

Thanks, peter.

The one thing I didn't do was to clean the actual fan blades.  I will do
that immediately.

The noise doesn't appear to be a "whine" that I normally associate with
bearing wear, but seems to be more of a noticeable "whirring".

If additional cleaning doesn't improve the situation, I'll start looking
for a replacement fan.

Those machines are very touchy about RAM Take all the sticks out and  
just install 1 pair, Sometimes you have to push in real hard maybe  
more than once. While you're in there I would reseat the processor too.

I have the DP 2.0. I have reset the CUDA. I have the stock card in it now, but 
had a 9800 Pro in it. It bongs and boots fine just no video. If I change the 
volume I get blips and everything.

I had problems with fan noise and overheating with my MDD dual 1.25 -
resulted in me stripping it bare and performing certain 'modifications' -
some of them to the fan and airflow. The fan had metal spider web grilles

away to  improve airflow - I also ditched the metal pci blanks. As for the
fan I scrubbed it all mercilessly with a toothbrush and washing up liquid -
taking care to avoid the electrical bits in the hub - and then gave the

the best shine I could get - seemed like a good idea at the time though I

Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

Hi everyone,

Recently I've noticed he fan on my Quicksilver G4 has been making much more
noise than usual.

I periodically clean the dust out of the interior and the ventilation
ports, but the noise persists..

Can anyone recommend a course of action?  lubrication?  replacement?

 ASD 2.5.8 is what will test, it may work without the onboard video other wise 
maybe a MOBO. Did you reset the CUDA and reseat the RAM?

Is it possible that your video card is not physically compatible with your 
model of G5?  Which G5 do you have?  Earlier models are PCI-X while newer 
models are PCI-E if memory serves.  Just throwing it out there.

It will not use the AirPort utility software it uses is third party software 
but it's real easy IMHO Ralink software is the one to use. The USB dongle is 
all you need, it's the whole card.
