Silly question, have you checked the power brick? I ask this because a
professor where I work went though two of them before he demanded that Apple
replace the little one with the 23" with the larger one for the 30" and he
hasn't had a problem since.

Well at least you got the G5 sorted. IMHO, the monitor will need a recap. If
you don't have much experience soldering, I would ask a friend. If you can't
find capacitors with the same value, you can go up in voltage. Good luck!

Re: G5 thinks there are still two monitors attached, after removing one.

2013-06-22 Thread Tom
Thanks for the help everybody, on both how to make the Mac forget the
imaginary monitor and how to troubleshoot the real but dead one.

I zapped the PRAM, and it fixed the problem. Now the Mac knows it only has
one monitor connected to it.

Alex first sent me the suggestion to zap the PRAM, and I had actually
thought about doing that earlier, but had forgotten what keys to hold on
restart. I got out David Pogue's big thick book called "Mac OS-X Leopard,
The Missing Manual," but it says not a single word about the PRAM. I tried
to look up PRAM in the book's index, but it's not there--not under P, not
under R for Resetting the Pram, nor Z for Zapping the PRAM, nor is it
mentioned anywhere in the book's extensive Troubleshooting section--in
fact, I can't find a single mention of PRAM anywhere in this huge (894
page) book, supposedly written by a Mac expert. How do you figure that?

So anyway, I went online and looked up how to do it, zapped the PRAM, and
now all is well.

Now to try to figure out what happened to the monitor that went kablooey.

Thanks again all.

Kris, Adam

Thanks for your response.
On closer inspection it does seem to have 2 single cpus and I assume
the upper one is not working going by the fan speeds - 300rpm upper,
1000rpm lower.
When my other half lets me get at the machine I'll try the simple
fixes - pram reset and see what I can glean for any nvram optins.

I don't have AHT nor ASD.
Is AHT available to download & burn?

Apart from resetting the PRAM, I could think of some other things--others
may correct me:
1. Look for Display Preferences in User/Library/Preferences and delete the
file (I don't know the name) or move it out of the folder
I know, you already logged in as a different user; I'm just brainstorming...
2. Click the button "Detect Displays" in the System Preferences/Displays
and see if that triggers the right reaction
3. As a last resort, Glen's suggestion to switch to Mirror mode would at
least give you proper control.

What does the System Profiler (About this Mac, More info...) report in the
Video/Displays section?

The same issue with 10.8.2 on a Mac Mini was posted here, alas with no
solution yet:

Re: 2004/week 10 dual G5 with one cpu dead

2013-06-22 Thread Kris Tilford
I'm not positive of this, but I'm about 95% sure your problem is different than
you think.
These G5 PowerMacs came in two distinct configurations that both used the term
"dual".

There were earlier versions with one dual-core CPU, and later versions with two
single-core CPUs, and BOTH these are referred to by Apple a "dual". I believe
your earlier 2004 PowerMac G5 has one dual-core CPU rather than two single-core
CPUs.

Your problem may be simple or hard to solve. You might be able to re-seat the
CPU to regain full dual-core functionality? It's possible, but unlikely, that
single-core function has been set in software, and full dual-core can be
restored via a software fix, perhaps as simple as a PRAM/NVRAM reset? There's
also the Apple Service Diagnostic boot disc that may have the ability to set
CPU function via software? These would be the "simple" fixes.

The "hard" fixes would be that your CPU or motherboard has a hardware problem.
Replacing the CPU chip would be required if the CPU were bad, or the
motherboard if the motherboard were bad. Troubleshooting this could be
difficult because you'd need a "known good" CPU or motherboard to figure out
which was bad.

I'd try a "simple" fix, and if you can't fix it, I think you're probably best
using it as a single CPU unit rather than spending time & money repairing it.
Spending time & money on a G5 PowerMac isn't economically sound on any basis,
you'd be better off selling the G5 for parts and getting a cheap Intel
hackintosh. You could buy an entire computer for less than the cost of
repairing one core on this G5.

it with out any reservations. I bought an eMac 10.5 install disk for it
several years ago. and did the upgrade to 10.5.8.
The only minor problem that I had was having to upgrade Apple Works from ver
6.2.7 to 6.2.9. The good thing is. it will run Quicken 7. The last good Money
Management app they made. So saying I have put OS10.5.8 on my Quicksilver and
Quicken 7. Since it's not connected to the internet, I keep all our finances,

The "Quicken Essentials" SW, sucks in my estimation.

2004/week 10 dual G5 with one cpu dead

2013-06-22 Thread geraldcornish

Hi all,

Where can I find the mpn for this 1.8ghz processor, please?

Would there be more than one compatible cpu?

My dual 1.8 g5 has the top cpu not working and I would like to
replace it to bring the beast back to dual cpu status.

It was sold as dual 1.8 but now runs with only one.

 marks it as
having dual 1.8 cpus.

System profiler says cpus=1

The Processor prefpane says "error - unable to load processor"

iStat give fan speeds of 1000rpm for cpu-B but only 300 for all the
cpu-A fans.

It may trick the card into thinking a monitor is still there.

Using the display menulet (the icon on the top menu bar), can you change the
resolution of the "ghost" monitor, to a smaller one?
This way, windows opening there might be still visible on the main monitor
and movable.

That's the best that I can think of right now. :-)

Of course, if you have a real, working second monitor around, you might
connect that one, moving the new windows onto your main screen, and
disconnect it to see if the problem goes away.
If you have a friend nearby with a lousy PC, this may be the time the PC
turns out useful. ;-)

Have you inspected the video card for blown capacitors?

The iMac turns itself on. That did NOT happen at my house! How can

G5 thinks there are still two monitors attached, after removing one.

2013-06-22 Thread Tom

I have a G5 running 10.5.8 with two 23" cinema displays attached. Or I did.
Yesterday one of the two displays just suddenly went dark, like blowing out
a candle. Nothing I could do would bring it back, so I have to assume it's
dead and gone. (If anyone has any thoughts about why this happened, I'd
love to hear them, but that's not the problem I'm having right now.)

I disconnected the dead monitor and all its cables from the Mac. There is
now only one monitor attached to the Mac. However, the Mac still thinks
there are two monitors attached to it.

In the System Prefs panel for Displays, under the Arrange tab, it still
shows a small (imaginary) monitor beside the large (real) one. It lets me
arrange this little imaginary monitor anywhere I want to around the big
one, but the little monitor doesn't really exist. Yet the Mac acts like it
does. When I open some windows, they go off the visible screen and open
somewhere on the invisible one, on the non-existent monitor, and I can't
get at them.

I've tried everything I know to get rid of this second, invisible monitor:
I repaired the permissions with Disk Utility, threw away the System prefs,
logged in as a different account, did a Safe Boot, and even ran Disk
Warrior through the disk. I tried attaching the monitor's connector to the
other of the two video ports.

Nothing makes any difference. Every time I go to the Monitors panel, it
still shows a small, nonexistent monitor next to the real one, and windows
still keep opening offscreen, on what the Mac thinks is another monitor.

Any ideas how I can convince this Mac that it only has one monitor attached
to it?
