Subject: Fix or Replace 1GHz G4

I have a 1GHz mirrored-door G4 (M8689) that I need to run a piece of legacy lab
equipment.  It boots up fine and seems to run well, but after several minutes
the monitor turns off and, a few moments later, the computer shuts down.  For
what it is worth, the fan has been running constantly for the past few months.
If anyone has any advice about how to repair the poor old thing, I would
greatly appreciate it.  If not, suggestions for a good source for a replacement
would be useful.  My online searches have not but fruitful.
-It
could be a power supply or maybe just an overheating problem.
Years ago when I got a used MDD it had a huge build up of dust bunnies the size
of rodent mice underneath the Darth Vader grill at the bottom of the tower. I
blew them out with a commercial air compressor. They can be removed manually if
you have the patience. So, check for dust everywhere.
If that does not work, depending on your software requirements older Intel
Mac's can run OS 10.5. When my G5 died I went to an older G4 and an Intel iMac
running 10.5 which worked for my legacy graphics software. --glen

How can an ‘archive’ be political? It’s like a public library, it doesn’t

I plan to check with AMD to see if the software is still available from them.

You’re about a decade too late. The minute AMD bought ATI, all the old ATI

It is rather interesting, but a very large number of the old sites have
vanished without a trace.

Welcome to the future. A PPC Mac isn’t going to help much here. For the price
of Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition you could get an entire hackintosh that supports
current software standards. I’ve been given free computers 10x as powerful as a
PPC G4. From an energy usage standpoint, you could probably pay for a new
computer with the energy savings alone. This is why LCD monitors replaced CRT
so quickly, the energy savings alone paid for the new monitor, same as with LED
lighting. A laptop provides the best flops per dollar/watt for normalized
consumer use. Old 2008-2009 Mac Minis & laptops can run Sierra using Sierra
Patch Tool for very reasonable prices.--

Re: Adobe CS2 licence broken

2016-09-09 Thread 'Glen' via G-Group
I did not have any problems moving my CS2 from a G5 back to a G4 a few months
ago.

Adobe did changed the old link to the CS2 download page with the needed
activation numbers. However the activation numbers on the new page are the same
as the old page.

The new link is:
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/other-downloads.html

You can download a copy of the old Adobe CS2 page from my Dropbox at:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/p2y6e0kdtdytgvd/Adobe%20CS2%20%20Downloads.zip?dl=0

Maybe reinstall CS2??? Good luck, glen

 Hi,

I've been using the Adobe CS2 suite for many years
without problems. My MDD had crashed recently and after I
put my recent CCC backup back on my crashed volume I cannot
use CS2 anymore. The app tells me that my trial period has
expired but when I try to activate it again no cigar. The
 server is not online ...

What gives? Isn't good ole CS2 free nowadays? Any
 comments? Thanks a lot.

 Best regards, Jörg.

Re: My G5 problems (resurrecting two PowerMac G5 computers)

2016-08-25 Thread 'Glen' via G-Group
IIRC, I used four 6-32 UNC metal round head screws to add a second HD to my G5
a few years ago. It was not a perfect fit and it may have been more difficult
to install the drive than it would with the standard Apple scews but it worked
for me. I think the trick was not to screw them in all the way and leave a
little space for the head to catch the guides. But that was a long time ago so
my memory is a bit fuzzy.
However, I would not recommend shipping the G5 with the HD installed with these
screws. --glen

Re: SATA PCI Card for G4 Sawtooth?

2015-10-02 Thread 'Glen' via G-Group
Good suggestion: that occurred to me, but the screw is not damaged and a proper
tool will remove it. And since I do not have a 10 inch or longer drill bit I
would have to buy that tool which probably cost about same as the proper tool.
Anyway probably a mute point since the G5 PS located where the computer was
dropped and most likely is damaged. Still a possible project if I get bored.
Meanwhile the Sawtooth is is just fine. I may replace it with a 2008 or 2009
iMac which will run 10.5 or 10.6 if I need more speed and can find one locally
for a good price. Thanks -- glen

Reach in with a long reach bit and drill the head off the screw.

Or use one of those screw extractor bits ( with the tiny grip teeth) on a long
reach extension. Don't let one screw discourage you.

SATA II. The Sawtooth has a dual 1.25 GHz upgrade processor with 2 GB RAM and
running 10.4.11.
The Sawtooth recognizes the full 320 GB of the drive when attached via a USB
2.0 card or the USB 1.1 native bus using a SATA-USB adapter. I would rather
have the drive inside the computer and be able to boot the drive into 10.4.11.
I can't do that when connected with USB on that old G4. My other option is a
SATA/Firewire external enclosure which should be bootable and would cost about
the same.

I did not think of going in that direction -- that could work! Then I could put

replace the G5.

Hi Glen,

There are cheap adaptors available which fit between the ATA-cable and the
SATA-connector on the drive. I have two big and fast SATA drives in my MDD
using those adaptors (price was 8 € on the net), the speed is awesome compared
to my other internal two ATA-drives. Plus I have all my PCI-slots available for
other cards.

Good luck, Jörg.

Does your G5 have an Apple Cinema Display attached? try disconnecting it and
plugging in a regular VGA monitor.

This happened to a prof here when the power supply for his 24” Cinema Display
died. Really weird.

(He ended up going through 2 of the power supplies before he made Apple give
him one from a 30”..no more dead power supplies after that. The 30” ps is
noticeably beefier than the 24”)

---

The monitor is a Hannspree and is connected to the G5's DVI video port. Tried
disconnecting everything expect the power cord; it just clicks on then off.
Looks likes the power supply needs to be replaced. --glen

I do have a "spare" PS from another G5 2.5 MHz LCS that was severely damage in

You can find the G5 power supply pinout diagrams on this site that shows how to
rebuild the power supply.

<http://www.item-innovacion.es/en/PowerMac_G5_PSU_Repair.html>

The G5 power supplies can be expensive, or hard to find, so in addition to DIY
repair, there’s other sites that show how to convert a standard ATX power

Re: google spam

2015-09-17 Thread 'Glen' via G-Group
A couple of year ago I received  call from a guy "from Google" who wanted to
update my business site (now retired) . He had a good presentation and I let
him run is pitch. He even used FLASH to to take control of my browser showing
me how he could improve the site. When I said I was not interested he got
agressive an ended up saying Google would take down my site if I did not agree
to his proposition.
I told "OK take it down" and hung it. --glen

Re: Best browser Power Mac G-4 OS 10.5.8?

I heard that TenFourFox doesn't come with flash player though. Maybe that
is the case? I would be curious to see speed comparisons with TenFourFox
and a few other browsers still supported on 10.5.8. Do any of these
 support HTML I wonder?

TenFourFox comes in at least two versions, one of which is for 7400
processors, and another which are for the later 7450 processors.

Based upon recommendations of security folks, I have removed Flash from my
machines.

My reply:

There is at least one other version of TenFourFox for G5 processors. When I
switched from a G4 to a G5 the 7450 version was installed on the cloned HDD and
it worked just fine. Later I upgraded to the G5 version. And I do not miss
FLASH. --glen

Re: PowerMac G5 sleep issue

2014-04-30 Thread 'Glen' via G-Group

- Original Message -
From: 'John Carmonne' via G-Group g3-5-list@googlegroups.com
Subject: PowerMac G5 sleep issue

My G5 PowerMac (latest generation) would not auto deep-sleep (worked fine when
done by hand) and that can cost a good chunk of money in electricity (~$100 a
year as it idles around 130W, deep-sleeps at about 1/7th of this); turns out
that the problem was introduced in 10.5.7 and not fixed in 10.5.8. It is
probably a coincidence that the Energy Saver icon was an Edison bulb in 10.5.6,
but moved to a CFL in 10.5.7. Earlier G5 PowerMac generations don't seem to
suffer this fate, so this may not be of concern to Cube users.

[snip]

* Using another model DVD drive (Apple System Profiler lists the problem drive
as: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B)

is all it took to resolve this issue. I tried an NEC 2100AD from another
machine I had, and read that an LG GH22NP20 also solves the problem, and hope
to try the Apple branded SONY DW-Q28A soon.

Makes one wonder about the wisdom of keeping old equipment running; $100 a year
in electricity can soon add up to a new machine. Can't complain that life is
not keeping me occupied.

Maybe we could start a list of Good and Bad drives with respect to this issue.

My Reply:

Not sure when the latest generation of G5's begins but I have a dual 2.5 Ghz
PowerMac G5 (June 2004), Machine Model PowerMac7,3.

It has a Pioneer DVR-117D rev B705 and does not have the sleep problems you
describe. --glen
