Re: Firewire 400 PCI cards - OK with a PowerMac?
Well, it turns out that the replacement internal FW module does work after all...unfortunately I only discovered this *after* I had ordered a TI-chipset FW 400 card and thought that wasn't working either. It turns out that my testing was at fault. (Note to self: test FW devices with something simple like an external drive enclosure, *not* a FW webcam or DV-bridge. Doh!) Oh well...I have a 6 FW port PowerMac now and the Dazzle DV-bridge still doesn't work. More investigation required. -- Neil -- -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: G4 won't finish booting
I've got a 2014 Mac mini that on 2 separate occasions corrupted its hard drive so successfully that OSX (I think it was El Capitan) would start booting and then after about 20-30 seconds just shutdown. Not much fun but on the positive side...it wasn't the PSU. -- Neil On 24/02/2018 18:22, Mac User #330250 wrote: It could also be a faulty PSU like Valter Prahlad mentioned, or it could be a faulty HDD so that some files got corrupted and thus the boot eventually fails. -- -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Firewire 400 PCI cards - OK with a PowerMac?
Thanks Kelly/Peter/Luis... ...I wasn't aware that the NEC chipset was the preferred one. The ones I briefly looked at yesterday on Amazon UK seemed to be all Texas Instruments, which I think is also on my G3's motherboard. I'll steer clear of those and try your suggestion. -- Neil On 23/02/2018 21:09, Kelly Harding wrote: I found the best results were with NEC chipped FireWire cards. I didn't say "unusual"...I said "more unusual" :p Which Firewire clearly is when it comes to PCI cards, compared with USB or network adaptors. ;-) -- Neil On 23/02/2018 22:14, W.Adrian D'Alessio wrote: Let's see, G list and someone thinks Firewire is unusual ? -- -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Great...thanks. Firewire 400 PCI cards - OK with a PowerMac?
To cut a long story short, I'd like to try to get my Dazzle* Hollywood DV bridge working and the only Mac likely to work with it is my old B G3 Powermac. Unfortunately the built-in Firewire ports no longer work (a common issue on this model I believe). Even after replacing the FW module no external devices are recognized in OSX Tiger or MacOS 9.2.2/8.6 so I suspect the TI chip on the motherboard has gone. Does anybody know if the generic PCI FW cards work with PowerPC Macs? There seem to be quite a lot of different models available on Amazon but I can only see one that says it works with Macs and it doesn't mention OS compatibility. The reviews are all from Windows users. Re: 16:9 displays possible on MacOS 8.6
I tried switching in the 9.2.2 ATi extensions...still the same 4:3 resolutions. While I was Googling, I found a couple of recent threads on the macos9lives forum discussing the same issue with Rage 128/Radeon cards in G3s running 8.6. They hadn't found a solution either despite trying all sorts of extension/driver combinations. Not important enough to spend much more time on it. I also have a QuickDraw GX extension set in 8.6 that I can activate via Conflict Catcher and I'm not sure QD GX works in 9.x. Plus I like 8.6 :-) Sorry...I should have specified the graphics card - it's the original ATi Rage 128. I thought both my setups were running the same, latest versions of the Rage 128 driver for pre-OSX, but your reply made me double-check and I was wrong. The 8.6 extensions are slightly older. If I can't find any newer ones to download I'll try the 9.2.2 ones. The one's I had success with in the G4 Quicksilver's had NEC chipsets. That is important as the OS had drivers built in for that. Any PCI USB2 card that offers OHCI will work out of the box; since this was also the requirement for Windows 7, pretty much any USB2.0 card on the market will work. USB1.1 cards were a different story. I've only just caught up with this threadI never realized that you could use off-the-shelf USB2 PCI cards with PPC Macs. I recently bought a couple of Konig (NEC chipset, 4 external ports, one internal) USB2 cards off Amazon to use with OpenBSD (one is now in an old HP minitower with a motherboard ATI USB chipset that is not recognized), so when I read this thread I went off and swapped the 2nd Konig card for the unemployed Grappler SCSI in my BW G3 PowerMac. It works fine under 10.4 - System Profiler reports an EHCI USB bus. The HP flatbed scanner works fine, though I'm not seeing any noticeable speed-up. A 16GB USB2 memory stick reads/writes at about 40 Mb/s, compared with 5 Mb/s on an internal USB port and the USB1.1 Belkin card I added many years ago. That's marginally faster than on my 2009 Mac mini running Mavericks, before the latter's caching kicks in.
