Re: adding memory to iMac G4
Among all the talk about upgrading, I want to warn you that this iMac is *not* going to play YouTube very smoothly, even with the suggested RAM upgrade. It's a great computer not just for simple things but also very complicated ones, but Flash video is simply so heavy on the processor that it's no fun anymore. Things may improve as Flash is slowly going to be phased out. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: adding memory to iMac G4
Hello Jeff, That is mighty cheap. You can pay up to five times that figure in Euro's over in the Netherlands. DDR SO-DIMMs are getting rare and 1GB versions are almost never for sale! It makes the decision for the topic starter a little easier though, because I personally think the iMac G4 is worth the (small) investment. Greetings, Eelco. If you have a use for 60 of them, I've seen lots being sold with a unit price of about $2 each. :-) DDR2 memory is at the sweet spot right now. 1 GB SO-DIMMs are $15 each and have been for most of the past twelve months. I'm not sure how pricey a 1GB DDR SO-DIMM is going to be.. Greetings, Eelco. Thanks for the question, looking closer at the G4 iMacs I see that it isn't just the USB 2 models that have an actual 2GB limit. According to Mactracker: 1. The original G4 iMac, was produced Jan 02 - Feb 03. It uses (1) PC133 144 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC133 168 pin SDRAM for a maximum of 1GB RAM total. 2. Was produced Feb 03 - Sep 03. The 15 800MHz model uses the same RAM as V1 above, with the same 1GB limit. 3. Was also produced Feb 03 - Sep 03. The 17 1GHz model, uses (1) PC2100 200 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC-2100 184 pin SDRAM. Apple lists the memory limit at 1GB but the actual limit is 2GB. 4. The USB 2 model was produced Sep 03 (Nov 03 for the 20 model) - Jul 04. It uses (1) PC2700 200 pin SO-DIMM and (1) PC-2700 184 pin SDRAM. In case anyone is wondering why Apple listed some G4 iMacs at 1GB maximum but in reality 2GB is the maximum I think originally each type of RAM was only available up to 512MB per stick for the 1GB limit, but in time higher density 1GB sticks became available and Apple didn't change their specs, maybe to avoid support liability. Then again I could be completely wrong. ;-) In all of the above the SO-DIMM is the user (easily) accessible memory and the SDRAM is the factory (know how to replace thermal paste) memory. These iMacs do not support DDR, and I believe that the memory sticks do not have to be of the same capacity. adding memory to iMac G4
Just heard about this site. My first post. I have an iMac PowerMac4.2 PowerPC G4 (2.1). Purchased in 2003; hard drive replaced in 2007 after a kernel panic. I now use a MacBook Pro for my stuff but would like to improve the speed of the iMac so kids can use it for simple games, watch YouTube vids, etc. The guys at the local Mac shop tell me it only has one slot, so I can't add RAM. (Current memory capacity is 768 MB.) Any advice how I can boost the performance of this old Mac? Thanks. -- J -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: adding memory to iMac G4
Hello! This type of iMac does indeed have one full length memory slot, but it also has a small SO-DIMM slot (which is more commonly used in laptops). Both modules are swappable, but finding a 512MB SO-DIMM SDRAM stick can be tricky (and possibly costly). I think the practical memory ceiling of the iMac G4 is 768MB. Unless, of course, money isn't the issue. One gigabyte of memory is the maximum you can get in an iMac G4, by the way.
