Re: Beige G3 graphics card resolution options?
IIRC, MacOS 9 only does 4:3 resolutions, but I have only had 4:3 monitors connected to my G3 BW. I have had my beige-which-is-actually- platinum G3 connected to a LCD TV before, but still only 4:3. I remember from trying to flash a PC-ROMed GeForce 6200 that I frequently spotted 1920 x 1080 as the top resolution, but only on machines like the BW G3 and up (i.e. ATI Rage 128, 128 Pro and nVidia GeForce 2, 3 4). And even the BW G3 only offered 1280 x 960 and 1344 x 1008 as widescreen resolutions (both of which didn't fit my LCD, I happen to have the 'impossible' 1366 x 768). Just my two cents! Mac OS 9 does just fine with Apple's 5:4 17-inch display, and I recall there was a portrait display for the IIci. Once you get to System Software 5.0 or so, it doesn't care about display dimensions. What your graphics card can drive is another question. Beige G3 graphics card resolution options?
I have a beige G3 (G4-accelerated) hooked up to my 60 LCD-TV as a game box, but am slightly annoyed by the limited resolution options in the graphics card I have installed (i.e. I have to display the video in pillarbox mode if I don't want any distortion). Are there ANY PCI graphics card models out there (new or discontinued) that support 1920x1080 resolution under OS9? Mac-specific cards, not 'reflashed' PC ones? If so, can anybody give me model numbers to look up? -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Beige G3 graphics card resolution options?
If anyone can confirm/deny Nada's reply (about there being no widescreen resolution support in OS9), please reply! -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Mac-specific cards, not 'reflashed' PC ones? AFAIK, there aren't many PCI video cards for Macs, working in G3s. There were the 3DFX Voodoo series (3 and up), but it was long ago (I had a Voodoo 3 in my G3, and Unreal Tournament ran fine), and the drivers were beta and not-supported (usually working, though). Then there are some Radeon: - 7000 - 7500 - 9200 (try Googling radeon pci mac) I had a Radeon 9200 PCI in my G3, and it wasn't that much better than the Voodoo... but still a decent card. Keep in mind that, even with a fast card, that Mac itself is the bottleneck: I seriously doubt it could handle a 1920 pixel resolution for gaming! Regarding the 16:9 format, maybe it's more a feature of the card+driver, than about the OS itself. What video card are you using now? If you're still with the built-in video (ATI Rage?), any of the above mentioned card would be a substantial improvement. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
