Hopefully this will settle it once and for all. Type about:plugins in Chromium's

I hope to gawd that the list members can accept this and move on, rather than

Chromium is a (nightly/hourly) build of the basic open source
project, based on WebKit. To that, to create Chrome, Google adds
proprietary stuff, including an embedded (sometimes out of date)
version of the Flash Player plug-in. IOW, Chromium should not be
able to play Flash content until you've otherwise installed the Flash
plug-in, in /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ or ~.

Testing it with sites such as YouTube is not useful, as those sites
sniff the browser's capabilities then give preference to coughing
h.264 or WebM over the other formats.

Try handing Chromium a flash file and see what happens. If it plays,
then it's getting Flash from somewhere. Inspecting the Chromium
process(es), via Activity Monitor or an lsof command, while it's
playing should show you the details.

I suspect you're misinterpreting streamed video? YouTube and many other video
sites are in the process of conversion away from Flash and to HTML5. During this
conversion, most video is available in both formats, and the specific format
streamed to your computer is determined by the site dependent upon your browser.
It's likely you're getting an HTML5 stream and thinking it's a Flash stream.

The acid test is to download a Flash video with the .flv file type,
and then try to open that file with a specific browser.

Can't load youtube with certain browsers, others ok

2011-11-12 Thread Tina K.

This is on my Mac Pro, below. I had been using Chromium for Flash sites so that
I wouldn't have to
install the Flash Player plug-in, but recently, about the time v14 came out, it has stopped
loading the >> youtube page. The youtube logo comes up on the tab, but that's it - no
parts of the page load that I can >> see.

So I installed the Flash Player plug-in to go back to how I used to view Flash
content. SeaMonkey,
OmniWeb, and iCab will load youtube but Camino, Chromium, and Opera will not.

Does anyone see a common thread here that I am missing?

I should add that Safari works as well.

I tested against a new, untouched account and had the same issue, as did my backup
disk. Reinstalling SL fixed the issue, which is strange because it seems to have
left everything intact - BOINC, LittleSnitch, etc... But it is good to know that a
reinstall of SL is painless, unlike earlier versions of OS X.

Ugg! That's the thing that drew me to ClickToFlash in the first place...it's
the Web, not the Safari Web and the Firefox Web and the Chrome Web and the
%%@$#^ Internet %%!@$#$% Explorer Web...as much as it tries to be all those

I'd much rather use one program for that task.

It COULD be that Youtube is changing things on the back end, based on your
browser's ID string. Turn on Safari's Developer menu and change your User Agent
string and see what happens.

I tried Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Camino User Agent strings in Safari and they
all loaded youtube.com fine.

Simply because I liked not having Flash in all of my browsers, that was the only
reason I started using Chrome in the first place. Any page with Flash that I want

my primary browser. I am familiar with ClickToFlash but it just seemed better to

Player installed, and it is the latest non-beta version 11.0.1.52.

What I can't figure out is why Safari, SeaMonkey, OmniWeb, and iCab will load
youtube.com and Opera, Camino, and the newly re-installed Google Chrome will not.
Google Chrome hangs with "Waiting for ad-g.doubleclick.net... in the status bar
and then the "Page(s) Unresponsive" window pops up.

AFAIK "Chromium" should have always required a Flash Player plugin.
The integrated Flash Player plugin is included in Google "Chrome"
browser, but the open source progenitor "Chromium" never had Flash
capability, and IF you were able to view Flash video using Chromium
you MUST have had a Flash Player Plugin installed - the installation
is normally globally available for all browsers.

So I installed the Flash Player plug-in to go back to how I used to
view Flash content. SeaMonkey, OmniWeb, and iCab will load youtube
but Camino, Chromium, and Opera will not.

Does anyone see a common thread here that I am missing?

There are so many different places that Flash Player plugins can be
installed, and it's possible you have several different versions
installed that might conflict? Adobe says "Flash Player Uninstaller"
is a helpful way to troubleshoot, so I'd recommend using the
uninstaller and then reinstall the latest version. Here's a link:

Safari is missing from that list, which will preferentially load HTML5 content
if it exists...

I should add that Safari works as well.
