Re: G4 933 Quicksilver

2011-03-12 Thread Anne Keller-Smith

Loved Yersinia's post and she is SO RIGHT!

I thought I needed an Intel iMac to do something Dreamweaverish for
web, and it turns out really I didn't, working with the naked code is
much better anyway. So I could still be using that machine. I have
kinda gotten hooked on Facebook though, and videos don't play too well
on the G4. Oh, and it didn't have an airport card, so we had to plug
the modem right into the box. That was a little funky, cuz the network
was on my son's iMac then.

So mebbe next time I just keep plugging along with the old Mac,
whatever model it is.

I have NEVER had any of the Macs die on me. I'm not kidding, I've
taken them to be recycled, but they were still working. The first one
was a Quadra - or an XVI I forget.

The only trouble I ever had was with the G4 I didn't realize it wasn't
sleeping, the fan was on 24/7, and came loose one day and banged
around in the case. Then when I called Apple they wanted to hear that.
I said, "you don't want to hear that, it's scary." Then when the tech
heard it he yelled "turn it off, turn it off!" Week later the Mac was
back, new fan, no troubles since.

We forget how nice the Macs are, how time saving. When PC people talk
about price, I just say, what about the price you pay for your time?
Never mind that they live forever and the hard drives don't tend to
crash, etc., etc.

On the other hand, it could be refreshing from time to time to hear

I’ve a Powerbook 1400 with a G3 upgrade and OS 8.6 for simple stuff,
with RAM-Mozilla mainly for email (including this list), MS Word 5,
FileMaker Pro 3. When its RAM gets full, I have to reboot it,
otherwise it’s always ready for a quick check or moment of
inspiration. I have it in my living room, which is possible because it
has no fan and boots from a CF card. I’ve typed an entire (thin) book
on it -- true, part of it with an external ADB keyboard.

Then a GigabitEthernet 2x500 which I use for all other things. It’s
starting to boot a bit slowly now, because I can’t help installing
more and more stuff. Otherwise it’s just there, doing all I want it to
-- sometimes after some coaxing.

Third: a GigE 450MHz (from a Cube) set up as a public computer running
Tiger, with user accounts and browsers in three languages to
accommodate different users. Running everyday with its old 20GB
harddisk, it’s a modest but valued workplace.

IMO upgrades are only NECESSARY when (a) the present computer no longer
does what you actually NEED it to do (word processing vs. gaming, for
instance: I mean heck, I bet an an old Mac Plus on System 6 would be
enough for an obsessed writer who doesn't care about games, music,
pictures or videos; but it sure as hell wouldn't do a graphics-intense
and/or online game addict any good!), or, (b) the computer is running
too slowly or is outright malfunctioning, which makes it way easier and
maybe also even cheaper to buy a newer, "better" one instead of fixing
or upgrading the one you have which has become insufficient or problematic.

But if that NON-PROBLEMATIC Quicksilver 933 of yours IS doing everything
you need it to be able to do, I think you should count your blessings,
ENJOY it, bask in its beautiful sunlight and remember:

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO FIX IT.

Yes, you should -- some time later. There is always a risk in making
an OS version "update." So it is always best to have the Leopard DVD
on hand. Also, there have been a few problems reported by people
making this update, but if your machine is pretty much plain vanilla
with standard applications and no third-party geeky "enhancements" to
the OS, things should go well. Check with the 933 hardware vendor for
any problems with the OS update.

If you have a current clone of your boot volume, on another drive

Yes, you should -- some time later. There is always a risk in making
an OS version "update." So it is always best to have the Leopard DVD
on hand. Also, there have been a few problems reported by people
making this update, but if your machine is pretty much plain vanilla
with standard applications and no third-party geeky "enhancements" to
the OS, things should go well. Check with the 933 hardware vendor for
any problems with the OS update.

Will there be a problem? I just had this computer upgraded from
733 to 933 and added ram to total 1.3.I don't have 10.5 dvds to
reinstall if there is a major problem.
