Re: G4 CPU swap into Blue White G3
another reason it always depends on what you are doing -- my 33mhz powerbook540c is still very very useful (possible essential) for me ... but not for the same things. This machine is being set up basically to run InDesign and Photoshop CS2. Altivec is a big deal for those, although not for lots of other things. A mhz-for-mhz swap at $25 or so would be a pretty good deal in this case. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I have upgraded a newer 466 to a 1.5ghz and I still like the upgraded turquoise mac ! I am using it for some music stuff. Anything that uses altivec is still about 2.5 times faster here than the g3 at 450 mhz. but note it only cost me $25 (and there are regularly 400mhz g4 zif on ebay now selling for even less) however, because the memory speed limits, going to higher mhz might put too much pinch on the altivec and limit its usefulness. a possible explanation for the difference of experience : altivec support has improved in the last few years for various reasons. another reason it always depends on what you are doing -- my 33mhz powerbook540c is still very very useful (possible essential) for me ... but not for the same things. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. G4 CPU swap into Blue White G3
A simple question that I'm sure has been covered before (I just couldn't find the answer): What's the newest variety of G4 whose swapped-out CPU will drop into a Blue White G3? These may still be available from OWC. G4 pin-grid array Processors from first G4 desktops will work in a BW, but this requires a firmware patch which is easily available. I traded a megahertz for megahertz G4s for the G3s in two of my BWs, and I was disappointed. I ultimately went with the 533 and 1000 MHz G3s instead. I can see that the 533 MHz G3 upgrades are no longer available, however the 1000 MHz upgrades still are. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/PowerLogix/PFZGX10001M/ OWC also sells a G4 upgrade for the same systems, but it is only one- half as fast, and it is one-and-a-half times as expensive. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. The ONLY G4 swappable into a BW is a ZIF for the short-lived Yikes first gen G4. Apple only made 'em for a few months. All the rest of the G4 series did not have swappable CPU's, but daughter cards with the CPU on it. http://tinyurl.com/bst5z7 PeterH is right, the 1Ghz G3 at OWC is a much better solution. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Blush I did LOTS of productive work with my 1000 MHz BW G3 before having to change to a G4 on account of software support issues. But even then, that 1000 Mhz BW G3 was faster than any G4 I then had. That all changed with the dual 1.0 GHz G4, of course. And, that dual 1.0 GHz lasted me quite a while until the dual and quad Intel Hackentoshes became practical solutions for me. I'm typing this on a dual 1.0 GHz Digital Audio (QS 2002 processor), but most of my productive work is now done on dual 3.6 GHz or quad 3.2 GHz P35-based Hackentoshes (10.5.6 vanilla Leopard, using the retail DVD distribution). --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
