Ultimately the solution is to just use the other ports, or add a pci card. Check your system logs to see if there are any firewire related errors. Try booting with nothing plugged into those ports. Here's a link to an eBay search for listings for the items I'm talking about. http://bit.ly/nkgFWm The US$1.00 (plus US$3.29 shipping) cards work perfectly in PCI hacks, and I would expect these to work in PCI Macks. OHCI compatibility is the key. Early VIA chip sets had issues; the current ones don't. For US$4.29, what can you lose? -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Yes it is!... G5 with the same problem...I try this 2 possible solution from two different peoples...I never get it back...But, you can try... I get a PCI DV1394.Good luck!!! From:Sterett Prevost Re: Stephen Curry and both FW ports Perhaps one of these suggestions will help: 1) Pull ALL cables (pwr, USB, etc) and let sit for 10 minutes; reconnect restart. f0 2) press the SMU reset button (ONCE) on the logic board; it is halfway between the lowest RAM slot and the bottom edge of the logic board. f0 3) Zap the P-RAM: f0 After the startup tone, hold down cmdoptpr until 3 additional startup tones are heard, then release the 4 keys. Note: the cmd key is next to the space bar and may have an apple or propeller on it, while the opt key is next to it and may have the word option and/or alt on it. f0 4) Open Firmware reset for PPC: f0 After the startup tone, hold down commandoptionof until the text screen is visible. When text can be entered, type the following commands, followed by the return key: reset-nvram f0 set-defaults f0 reset-all (the Mac will boot up after this command is entered From: Nordahl I have revived FireWire ports with this Open Firmware action: Boot into Open Firmware: Restart holding command-option-of At the Open Firmware command line key in: reset-nvram press return reset-all press return Your MAChine should restart and your FireWire ports may be available. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. G4 MDD has lost FireWire.. .. Ideas?
Is this a common problem? I can't reach my external drive via the motherboard FireWire ports. When I look in the hardware list the FireWire category is completely blank. Resetting the PRAM does not bring it back. I would welcome any other suggestions for things to try from the audience. Luckily the external drive also has USB2 and eSATA, so my back-ups aren't lost. If there isn't likely to be a simple fix for this I might have to go shopping for a SATA PCI-X card.
