Re: G4 getting wonky with cpu hungry widgets.
I want to Thank every one who read and responded to my thread. I learned a few things and i will investigate the Onyx and the applejack. What i forgot to do before i posted to the list was to boot from OSX installer DVD and run Disk Utility. Heh. I did that and it couldn't fix it. So i ran Disk Warrior and that fixed the issue. All the offending apps are behaving now, including Safari, Mail, Widgets, YahooIM, and ichat, and whatever else. There were a couple of overlapping files and some me involved a cache. So, yes, it was a HDD file corruption problem. Thanks goodness for the list and thank goodness for the Disk Warrior! Carter Any kernel panics (whole OS crashes)? No kernel panics so far , just certian aps like to quit like mail safari yahooim ichat. QuickTime dosnt crash just seems to be like net oriented apps. What does Activity Monitor say are the top cpu pigs? Something happened that made some pigs. Safari keeps quiting and it takes way too much CPU time too. Apps quit too frequently and memory seems to be leaking. Right now i am running MAIL and Activity Monitor and that is all, aside from Finder. I have 16.36MB Free memory and 917 MB active 461MB inactive, 140MB wired How is this possible? I know it isnt right. Anyone have an idea what is going on here? You might have one or more bad memory sticks. When apps quit unexpectedly, this could be a sign of bad RAM. I would run the Ram Test in Applejack in Single User mode after installing it with memtest included, and see if it indicates bad RAM. Then proceed to determine which one it is. cpu seemingly hungry might indicate a disk going bad. It spins its wheels so to speak, while trying to Read/Reread a bad hard drive, and it seems like its going wonkers with the apps. A bad hard drive may be another area to investigate. There are other threads on this as well. Just search the forum. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
