I would like the List Nanny to close this thread (I'm the OP).

I apologize for starting it here, and have initiated it on the Mac Pro

With VirtualBox and every Virtual Machine (VM) for that matter, limitations
apply:
http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#intro-macosxguests

/Mac OS X is commercial, licensed software and contains both license and
technical restrictions that limit its use to certain hardware and usage
scenarios. It is important that you understand and obey these restrictions.
In particular, for most versions of Mac OS X, Apple prohibits installing them
on non-Apple hardware.
These license restrictions are also enforced on a technical level. Mac OS X
verifies whether it is running on Apple hardware, and most DVDs that that come
with Apple hardware even check for an exact model. These restrictions are not
circumvented by VirtualBox and continue to apply./

It is sometimes construed that only 10.6 Server may be used in a Virtual
Machine due to the OS X license, but that is not entirely true (see answer by
Tom Rose):
http://www.itworld.com/answers/topic/virtualization/question/can-i-virtualize-snow-leopard-lion

Dispite this “fact” (that the license doesn’t mention VMs at all), most
Virtual Machines don’t support 10.6 anyway:
http://37prime.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/vmware-fusion-4-1-1-no-snow-leopard-client-allowed/

(Fusion 4.1 did allow 10.6 and 10.7, with Fusion 4.1.1 they removed it and
only allowed Server).

Once you know, understood and complied with the license (and if you know which
parts of the license are legally binding for you, which will also depend on
where you live, and in the end—that what it comes down to—if you care about it
that much), there is almost always a way:
http://blog.iharder.net/2011/07/25/run-snow-leopard-in-virtual-machine-to-retain-powerpc-applications/

Wow, that's odd, because what Pages reminds me of more than anything else is
good ol' Pagemaker, which I LOVED.

For years my "word processor" was actually either "Ready, Set, Go" or Pagemaker.

RSG actually still exists , although
sadly, they're not compatible with 10.7 or 10.8, and none of their available
versions will open my old files, let alone save them to something I can use.

Re: Mac Pro Testing Suggestions

I agree that Mountain Lion is a pain in the posterior to any old time, Mac
Proficient, Senior. That being the case, I use my new Mac Pro Tower, 1.2 GHz
Quad-Core Intel Chip for email and certain projects … BUT , I keep my
Quicksilver with AirPort/Wifi turned off for my finances and investments. It
runs Leopard OS11.5.8 and Quicken 2007 PLUS ) It has the discontinued Apple
Works 6.2.9 on it.

It seems that everything New Apple comes up with … drops a feature that I had
used everyday. Such as back then, Macro's on Apple Works word processing (which
really chapped my tail) … and then, they dropped Apple Works). With Mountain
Lion's Pages there are also no Macro's. In can't find a way to increase the
Print size in incoming Mail, etc. etc.

For that matter, I know of a person (very much more Macintosh Knowledgeable
than me) that does high end home remodeling. He stayed with OS9.2.2 in his
business, because: he had all the drafting software and I quote, "I don't have
time to waste learning a New System and all the short cuts every time Apple
changes the OS. The older software that I own does the job just fine."

In my case, All my envelopes, Letter heads, lists, contracts, etc are Apple
Works documents.

Pages is too similar to MicroSuck WORD to me … And I rejected "Werd" many
years back. For writing, I changed to Nisus Writer Pro years ago. To submit a
manuscript, which MS Werd is the only thing most editors will accept these
days, Nisus writer will convert it to MS Werd for submission.

Well, except for the slots, oh, and the memory, and pretty much everything but
the case, hardware-wise :-)

However there already are INtel-oriented LEM lists; I'm on the Macintel and the
Macbook lists (and the iMac list coveres all models from the original Bondi to
the latest Intel one)

I've stated many times before that the balkanization of the LEM lists reduces
the signal:noise ratio considerably. I'd prefer a much simpler set of lists:

Mac Desktops, Mac Laptops, Mac General would cover them all adequately rather
than having to sub to a myriad of different lists. (if you can, some lists are
no longer actively administered…iirc the last list Admin on the MacBooks list
left well over a year ago, so messages can get stuck in moderation)

If some thread doesn't interest you, you don't have to read or participate.
I've been outvoted on this matter every time, too.

Exactly.
As a model, I'm part of a similar-but-separate moderated lists of
audio engineers and technicians. The experience, knowledge and
educational content is huge. Even though I'd say there;s a 50% or
better core group of common members that are all active and valued
members of all THREE lists, the tight control of content-

easy to keep track of all of the lists and content.

All you need to do in 10.7 or 10.8 is go to system and Mail preferences and
tune them to act exactly like SL 10.6
Plus Dictation and Mission control is a super upgrade. Yes, the loss of Rosetta

If you do get a new OS weather it be Snow Leopard or better do a total
clean of the HD by erasing it first and if it takes the new OS without a
problem you should be good to go!!! Also I would max out the memory too. I
think this computer is maxed at 4G??? Not sure if it will take more???

Mac Pro Testing Suggestions

2013-01-09 Thread Bill Connelly
Just got a nice deal on a Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008) 2 x 3.0MHz with
Intel Xeon 5400 series ("Harpertown") processors.

What type of testing might I run, to exercise the various parts? Is
there an Apple Hardware Test or Service Diagnostics that I could get a
hold of?

I have run Geekbench, and am trying to compare the details of the
results with others on the benchmark site, but its a bit tedious
hunting down the data for comparison (still working on it).

I am also getting a copy of Snow Leopard (currently running 10.5.8),
and hope to compare some results there as well.

Basically want to know everything is working correctly.

Suggestions welcomed.
