I ruled out real ram problems since it was only mail that crashed,
and when I re-initialized it everything was fine.
It appears that the problem was a corrupted Envelope Index file.
I copied my old ~users/me/library/mail folder back, and returned the

problems it has worked for me.
In your home folder go to Library/Mail and you will find a file
called Envelope Index.
With the Mail Application closed change the name of this file to
