First, if you copy just part of the whole setup, you won't likely succeed.
Copy protetcted software, usually puts some hidden files somewhere: if you
don't know exactly what and where, it's likely you'll miss something.

The usual way is to clone the whole disk/partition, as faithfully as
possible (and, eventually, deleting unused stuff later).

Besides, there can be hidden/system files that won't be copied in the normal
way.
Tools like CCC can copy even those files, so they usually succeed (but not
always; sometimes I lost my registration even using CCC). A Block copy
should be the safest method.

I get a password request that I can't get past to complete
 the copy process.
Aha! This can be your problem.
To copy/alter some system files/areas, OSX asks you the password; even CCC
(or the like) has to pass through that.
If you don't have the password, the copy operation will abort, or it won't
be complete.

A way to override that limit, is booting from another OSX installation
(where you DO KNOW the password), and cloning the target disk from there
(in other words, the password is about the system you're using/booting from,
not the one you're cloning).
Ask me more info if I didn't make myself clear.

NB: To do this cloning you have to use OSX, since OS9 doesn't know how to
handle the OSX system/hidden files.
Or, you could use some Linux disk tool, but I have no knowledge about that.

The Avid Meridian software uses an USB dongle, so I
am confused why they would also require password protection
When someone is paranoid about copy protection, he can think The more, the
better. ;-)

Or, the password you're missing is the OSX password (and has nothing to do
with the Avid software).

to copy or move the files.
If the latter is the case, it's OSX requesting the password (for safety
reason). The same password request happens when you install some new
software.
If you don't have the system password, you're limited in the way you can
manage OSX: you are working as a simple user, not the administrator.

Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes exact clones of whatever's on the drive.
It'll definitely make a bootable copy of an OS9 drive.

(come to think of it, I need to see if it'll do a clone of a CentOS drive I
have... Anyone know?)

Welcome. Before I switched to Mac, I was an Amiga Man too.

Larry

Hello one and all of the G-Group.

I currently have too many G3, G4 and G5 Mac computers, but I am trying
to sell some of them. My interest in them is in using both MacOS
(versions 9 and 10) and MorphOS on these fine old systems. For those
that don't know what MorphOS is, it is a re-write of AmigaOS3.1 for
PPC hardware and it started out 11 years ago on Phase5 PPC accelerator
boards for the Amiga A1200, A3000 A4000 computers.

It is a very lightweight operating system, dubbed the Lightning OS.
Although I like MacOS9 and MacOSX and use 10.5.8 for most of my
computing needs, I support the growth and expansion of MorphOS and
hope to be able to use it as my primary operating system very soon.
MorphOS3.0 is about to be released and will include support for the
last few G4 PowerBooks produced by Apple (models 1106, 1107, 1138, and
1139). MorphOS2.7 is the currently released version and it supports
all G4 Mac Mini's, the 1.25GHz 1.42GHz G4 eMac's, almost all G4
PowerMacs, as long as you install an ATI Radeon video card in them.

For Mac owners that no longer enjoy using MacOS9, or MacOSX on their
slower G4 Mac hardware, you might want to give MorphOS a try, as it is
a free download for the 30 minute time limited demo version. After
the 30 minutes expire the system slows to a crawl until you restart
your computer and then you have another 30 minutes of unrestricted
speed for free. If you like it you can purchase a license keyfile
that will remove the time limitation and all updates are free for
registered users.

Proof of concept demonstrations of MorphOS have also been shown on a
dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac and a 2.1GHz G5 iMac, though the developers
have stated that they are concentrating on work to perfect MorphOS for
the currently supported G4 Mac hardware before they spend any time
working on porting MorphOS to the G5 models. Release of MorphOS3.0
with support for the 1.67GHz G4 PowerBooks will be a huge step forward
for all Amiga Like operating systems. MorphOS is capable of running
most AmigaOS3.1 friendly software natively by using a 680x0 to PPC
Just-in-Time compiler/interpreter. There are also many new MorphOS
native applications and games, or ports of applications and games from
other platforms.

I am bound to have many questions for the Mac users on this list, as
my experience with MacOSX is limited to only the last 5 years or so.
For example, I need to clone the hard drive in my dual 1.25GHz G4
PowerMac which has an Avid Meridian video editing system installed in
it. I bought 7 of these systems from a studio that was upgrading
their studio, with the break-out boxes for audio and video input/
output and USB dongles, but one of the systems had a damaged hard
drive and I am trying to restore use of the Avid Meridian editing
hardware and software by cloning the hard drive from one computer to
another. Since I have the USB dongles for all of the systems and both
the PCI cards inside the computer and the break-out boxes for input/
output, plus the USB dongles are required to use the software, I don't
see why the software on the hard drive would be protected from
copying, but it apparently is, as I have been unsuccessful in my
attempts to copy the Avid software from one hard drive to another.
Any help would be appreciated. I can also use Ubuntu PPC 10.10 to
clone the drive, if there are any tools for Linux that would be easier
to use than trying to do it with MacOSX. The Avid Meridian software
only runs on MacOS9.2.2, if that makes any difference to any of you
trying to help me. Thanks and I hope to get to know more of you on
this list in the future.

Regards,
AmigaDave

Re: New Member to this list

2011-11-01 Thread David W. Morris

Hi Bill,

thanks for the reply to my questions. I have tried Carbon Copy
Cloner, but with zero success. I probably did something wrong and
will try it again. The hard drives that came with the Avid Meridian
software and MacOS9.2.2 MacOSX10.2.6 on them are set up to boot to
the desktop with a blank password and a user name of Wexler Video.
There must be a system password that I do not know, or an Avid
Meridian password that I do not have, because when I try to copy the
system files, the OS, or the Avid Meridian software to a different
hard drive, I get a password request that I can't get past to complete
the copy process. The Avid Meridian software uses an USB dongle, so I
am confused why they would also require password protection to copy or
move the files. (Yes, I have all of the USB dongles for each of the 7
systems)

I have 4 IDE hard drives in the dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD PowerMac as follows:

1. 6gb hard drive removed from a G3 iMac with MacOS9.2.2 on it that
works and boots on the dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD PowerMac
2. 160gb hard drive w/MorphOS2.7 installed on it, which also boots
through the boot option screen when the Option key is held down while
booting.
3. 120gb hard drive w/Ubuntu10.10 PPC installed on it (I think I have
forgotten the password for this installation and may need to re-
install, or recover the password somehow. I am a total noob with
Linux of any flavor)
4. Empty 80gb hard drive formatted for Mac w/HFS+ file system that I
hope to use as the drive to clone the original drive that came with
these video/audio editing systems that came from a production studio
in Hollywood, CA about a year ago with Avid Meridian cards and input/
output break-out boxes, as well as an ATTO Fibre Channel card. (in
fact, I have 2 or 3 sets of Avid Meridian cards and break-out boxes
for sale to anyone who has a G4 PowerMac and wants to play around with
audio/video editing. I am trying to sell them on eBay, but if you are
interested, let me know. I can sell them cheap and you can have a
$3,000+ editing system for literally pennies on the dollar)

Since MorphOS2.7 takes up so little hard drive space (the entire OS
plus several apps, like the Odyssey1.15 web browser and others, only
takes up about 165mb of hard drive space), I was thinking of moving it
to the 6gb hard drive. Then I would use the 160gb hard drive for
MacOSX10.5.8, with one partition for data storage of media files that
I could access as a shared partition from all OSes I use on this
computer. I would then keep the Linux Ubuntu10.10 PPC (or later)
install on the 120gb hard drive, with perhaps half of that drive
partitioned as another data storage partition shared between all OSes
on this computer. Finally, I wish to clone the 80gb hard drive that
is in an identical computer that I sold to a friend which has a good
install of the Avid Meridian audio/video editing software that runs
the PCI cards and break-out boxes. It came from the production studio
with MacOS9.2.2 and MacOSX10.2.6 together on the same partition. I
don't need the MacOSX10.2.6 part of that install, but it will probably
be easier to do an exact clone of that drive to my empty 80gb MacOS HFS
+ formatted hard drive and then if I want, I could later try to delete
the 10.2.6 install and just leave the MacOS9.2.2 on that drive, as
that is the OS that the Avid Meridian software runs under.

What is CentOS? I will have to look it up. Thanks also for the link
to the list netiquette guide. I will read it when I have some free
time, so I don't make too many mistakes on the list.

Sorry for the long post, I hope it has not offended or bored most of
the members of this list.

If anyone has any suggestions that can help me accomplish what I have
outlined above, I will really appreciate your help. If posting such
help on the list will just be a waste of bandwidth, you can email me
directly.

Thanks again,
David
aka AmigaDave
