Slow start-up on MDD FW800

2011-07-22 Thread Hal
Hi all,

My FW800 is beginning to start up slowly. At first I'd get the
gray start-up screen with the timer icon at the bottom but it would
just keep going. Eventually I got the international no symbol
(circle with a diagonal line). I have tried a different CPU,
different hard drives, different busses, hard drives from other G4s
and the best I can get now is a start-up lasting twice as long as
normal. Any ideas?

All the best,

Hal

It could be POST (Power On Self Test, testing hardware at boot) is finding
something wrong.
Do you have Apple Hardware Test disc?

Did you try different Ram sticks?
Booting problem can be related to failing/bad Ram, IIRC.

Once the start-up ends (in the best scenario), does the Mac works ok?
If yes, then the motherboard should be fine.
If not, motherboard could be the culprit maybe.

Did you test the MDD HD in another Mac?

Did you try to boot from optical media? (CD, DVD)
Any difference?

Safe boot holding the Shift key, then restart normally.
