But it is barely a drop in the bucket to Apple's bottom line. As long as Apple has no desktop products targeted to big offices, they're going to stay a marginal player. Add to that the recession plus Apple's lack of commitment toward keeping up-to-date with 3rd party products (eg: Java, security fixes, etc)... - Dan. -- - Psychoceramic Emeritus; South Jersey, USA, Earth. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: The Intel-only future draws closer
Yeah I tend to agree... It's the same with any business it's all about the money and they do their best to force the public into buying new stuff because they can't use their old stuff anymore because it has become obsolete... I had to get a newer Apple running Tiger just so I can go on to some websites that I couldn't go on before running Jaguar... This is why we have other web browsers developed so we can still use our older computers, who here can use Internet Explorer on their old machine??? A few yrs ago i thought there was something wrong with my computer till someone told me about these other web browsers... The auto industry does the same thing it designs their parts to fail after a certain length of time, how do i know this I am retired auto worker and worked as a machinist and toolmaker... And they do this till the DOT and the Ins. Industry gets involved and finds out that peoples lives are at stake from car accidents... They know just how far they can push it till it breaks!!! -Original Message- From: Dan dantear...@gmail.com Sent: Aug 2, 2009 11:23 PM To: g3-5-list@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: The Intel-only future draws closer At 5:53 PM -0700 7/27/2009, Al Poulin wrote: The Subject line carries the title of a Macworld article by Rob Griffiths at: http://www.macworld.com/article/141882/2009/07/powerpc2intel.html it cites trends at applications developers as well as at Apple. But expected. Apple just doesn't make quatloos from supporting powerpc systems. I blame Jobs for all of it. Apple basically abandoned Tiger as a dev platform earlier than expected, and the new XCode and frameworks are making it more and more difficult to support Tiger. Most developers got used to the support current and previous OS - and now with Apple releasing the trivial Snow Leopard and a major release, the lemmings are all dropping Tiger prematurely. Is it a big deal? Nah. Apple is making their kiloquats by selling iPhone, iPod, and iTunes tracks. Well, they do count bytes backwards while not doing the same for bits. Since the change to Intel there really isn't a whole lot of reason to buy hardware from Apple. It's Intel that does all of the hardware design. Apple does make nice software and adds a few dribbles of hardware mostly to make you think you need it. Now entertainment items - iPod, iPhone, iTunes - are a different story and seem to be the main profit generators. Microsoft Intel is just plain lousy software and it shows little signs of improving. Excel 2001 on this Apple 8500 works fine and I haven't seen anything that makes me want to upgrade. But I have found that a cheap Intel box running Ubuntu Linux is getting a lot of use these days to keep up with the internet which seems to be deliberately programmed to force obsolescence of browsers. The operating system and things like Firefox remain free and are keeping up really well. And, most important, if you don't like it you can change it. Give it a try. All you need is an old Intel box you can probably get for free as a discard by someone who wants to run Windoze-7. -- -- A fair tax is one that you pay but I don't -- --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: The Intel-only future draws closer
The intel-only future already arrived in early June when Apple released Java Update 4 for 10.5.7 that has Java SE 6.0 v.1.6.0_13 support for INTEL ONLY and leaves all the PPC Macs at Java SE 5.0 v. 1.5.0_19. I was trying to track the International Space Station(ISS) lunar and solar transits using a Java program and it wouldn't run because it requires JRE 6.0 and I was shocked Apple cut loose all the PPC Macs BEFORE Leopard was done. I assumed they'd at least wait until Snow Leopard to pull the plug on PPC. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
