Which G4? You don't specify, The early G4's had cdrom drives instead of
dvdrom drives.

It does sound as if the Optical drive is foo.

I"m sure they have drives laying about to swap you; hell a brand new drive
won't cost more than $20 or so...

Here's a DVD+/- R/RW DL drive for $28

I bought a G4 iMac at FreeGeek in Portland, a few days ago, and it
came with Ubuntu installed. It appears to be the Jaunty Jackalope.

But when I tried to install OS X, I couldn't get it to start up from
the iMac's optical drive. Wouldn't boot.

The lovely young woman at FreeGeek gave me a disc with a utility that
destroys everything on hard drives associated with the computer.
Wouldn't boot off it, either.

I don't really know if the optical drive is even working properly, at
this point. No evidence for it.

Any ideas? (I forget, can one boot OS X from a Firewire optical drive?)

I suppose I could call FreeGeek.com Hate to bother people who do
such good work recycling computers, though.

Perhaps you need:

I need a direct link to it please. I preferably would rather have
Kubuntu.

Ubuntu, G3, XPostFacto

2010-05-11 Thread deadwinter
Hi folks:

I've been searching the archives and I could have sworn we recently
had a discussion around using XPostFacto to boot Ubuntu from a
firewire drive on a beige G3. Did I imagine that?
