I wouldn't try to save a few bucks buy buying a refurbed drive.
Drives have a finite lifetime, particularly if burned at the highest
rated speed.

Samsung SATA drives, which may be identical in appearance to the
above-cited drive, have been very good in my applications, where I
may burn several (say, up to six) DVDs at a sitting.

The amount of cleaning steps necessary to maintain good performance
is remarkably low on Samsungs and Lite-Ons. It is much higher on
Pioneers.

I would buy a brand-new drive, not a refurbed drive, and expect to
pay somewhat under $30 (not including tax and shipping).

There is a video on OWC's site showing how to do it. Looks fairly easy.

Apple has always had issues with the bezels of the drives it supplies.

The Quicksilver was an attempt to get away from issues with bezels.

I can't comment on the G5.

At least with G4s and G3s earlier than the QS, there were in some
cases at least three part numbers for the bezels on account of the
differences in the location of the eject button and/or the manual
release hole.

If your machine presently has a Pioneer, then by all means replace it
with a Pioneer.

They are very good drives ... at one point they were the best of all
drives ... but they have since been superceded by Lite-On, and others.

For a generic case, such as a Hack, where there is no case bezel at
all, and the drive's own bezel is all that matters, go with the Lite-
On or Samsung.

Re: What is the best Super Drive for G4 Sawtooth running at 450Mhz?

2009-01-26 Thread gifutiger

Greetings ( + )!( + )

I replaced the original CD/DVD player that came with my G4 AGP
Graphics 350Mhz with a
Samsung Super-WriteMaster SH-S202N - Disk drive - DVDRW (R DL) / DVD-
RAM - 20x/20x/12x - IDE - internal - 5.25" - LightScribe -
(Refurbished) which I got from newegg.com for $21.44 shipping
included.

However newegg.com doesn't have this unit any longer, but you can get
one from:
http://www.nowdirect.com/exec/partInfo/part_detail.tsb?prcpart=RETSH-S202N%2FBSBN%20RPL
for $17.99 plus shipping.

I recommed this drive, it has worked just fine for me and very
economical.

Cheers

For $2.00 more get the Pioneer, it is plug and play and works nicely ...
I have both a DVR -116 and a DVR-107 in my MDD.

All conventional height 5.25" optical drives utilize the same
mounting scheme.

And, in a DA or earlier, you actually do not require screws to mount
the drive ... it can float freely within the optical/Zip carrier.

The carrier is essentially the same from the first B&W to the last DA
with only a few changes, none of which should affect the mounting of
the drive.
