There was a 500 MHz dual processor.
Oops, you’re right--I forgot that snakebite I’m using daily...!

Re: CPU upgrade options for Power Mac G4 DA

2011-05-17 Thread Geke
Leopard is a bit slower than Tiger, so you have to decide if it’s
worth it.

Otherwise, running Leopard on this DA is not a problem. The only
problem is with installing it, unless you can use another faster Mac
for that: connect the DA in target disk mode and install onto its
harddisk from the faster Mac.
Then make a disk image of the DA’s boot partition to another disk (or
partition) so you won’t need to use the other Mac again, in case your
boot partition goes bad.

Upgrading the processor, in my opinion, is only worth the trouble if
you at least double the speed. And often you can get a complete
machine, MDD or QS, for the same price as a CPU upgrade. That means
you’d have two good Macs instead of one, for the same cost! In your
case, you could look on ebay for a QS 2002 with a broken CPU.

On 100MHz models, only CPUs from 100MHz models make sense: a 600MHz
CPU from a 133MHz Mac runs at 450MHz in a 100MHz Mac, unless you dive
deep into firmware settings.

Because 450MHz is about the fastest 100MHz CPU that Apple has used,
your only option would be a CPU upgrade like Sonnet etc.

Good luck,

A related dual processor for a 133 MHz but was 533 MHz.

It is my understanding that as long as the Powermac shares the same Front Side
Bus, in this case, a 133 MHz, then yes, a CPU from a later model will be
compatible.

It is my understanding that as long as the Powermac shares the same Front
Side Bus, in this case, a 133 MHz, then yes, a CPU from a later model will
 be compatible.

There are two 133 MHz processor standards: DA and QS.

Processor card power comes from the motherboard on a DA.

Processor card power comes through a stand-off screw on a QS.

It is possible to install a QS processor in a DA PROVIDED the required +12
volts for the processor card is separately provided. The usual way of
doing this is to provide a cable with a Molex connector on one end and a
#10 eyelet on the other. Pin #1 on the Molex for +12 volts.

Also, the required fan power is different between a QS and a DA. The usual
way of doing this is to provide a cable with a Molex connector on one end
and mating connector on the other end. Pin #1 for the Molex; pin #2 on the
Molex for +12 volts return.

Which brings me to my question: what are some good compatible upgrades for
 DA Power Macs?

I have a G4 DA as well.
It was a 667 MHz model, and I installed an OWC Mercury G4/1.4 GHz CPU
upgrade. It certainly made this Mac much more useful (I work in DTP using
Adobe CS3 and, while not really fast, it's usable).

My feedback on this upgrade is twofold. While it runs smoothly in OSX (10.3
and 10.4), I had several issues in OS9:
- Occasional freezes on startup
- Occasional system crashes when running games
- Audio is sometimes not working (no sound whatsoever), and you have to
re-boot several times to get it back
- Formac ProTV card not working anymore

So, if you're still using OS9, beware of CPU upgrades.
There is (was?) a database of user reports on CPU upgrades on the XLR8 site:

I bought a DA online that someone had put a Dual 533MHz cpu from
another DA. I feel very fortunate to have it ... it was the first G4 I
had really wanted to buy when it first came out, but couldnt afford
the price at that time. I think I paid around $100 including Shipping
for this one ... feel like it was a steal.

What happens to the monetary value of such wondering machines?

I like the Quicksilver machine=quieter than dual drive doors, plenty
