Summary: Crash in Gaim 2.0.0 beta 6

Initial Comment:
I haven't seen any pattern to the crashes yet, and sometimes I'm not here when
it happens.

I should be able to provide more reports, as it's happened regularly.

Summary: Crash when trying to change buddy icon

Initial Comment:
When I try to change my buddy icon, Gaim just crashes after I select the file.
This happens both with only the Jabber prpl or only the ICQ prpl enabled. I
tried to add gif, png and jpeg images as the buddy icon. I attached a drmingw
trace I got with a fresh svn debug build.

(One thing I tried to change in the code was checking if error is NULL before
trying to print out debug info, and this stopped the crash from happening and
everything went smoothly, the buddy icon did change.)

Thanks for looking into this!
Mark

Understand you've got tons of job with this,
but I'll really appreciate any help with mark's recipe,
coz it's seems he solved with no dependencies hassle.

This one was SVN;
However it has non-SVN duplicates: 1643591, 1656971, 1659707
which all have comments and traces with them as well

Summary: Crashes on some emoticons

Initial Comment:
Gaim segfaults when a buddy sends some user-defined emoticons,
maybe a gif-file is being attached to those (gaim also crashes in the end
of a file transfer). I think this bug is related to the file-receive-crash, as
I
think the msn-client in the other end sends the emoticons as gif or jpeg
files.

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Summary: Gaim crashes on silc file transfer (WinXP)

Initial Comment:
everytime i or the friend im testing this with tries to send a file with gaim
connected by silc, the file transfer window opens, but immediately freezes, so
you can't do anything but close the window, which crashes gaim completely. we
both have winxp sp2 and the kerio firewall and set the rules there to accept
both incoming and outgoing connections from gaim. normal text chatting works
fine with gaim + silc.

tested with the windows versions of 1.5.0 and the latest beta: 2.0.0beta6

same problem on both.

Initial Comment:
I entered my MSN account into the Accounts screen (which may, or may not have
any buddies...I cant remember exactly..hehe), along with Password (which COULD
have been actually an incorrect password...hehe, it's been a while since I used
MSN...)

When I hit Save and then toggled the account to Online to login, It got to
Getting cookie and then I got the generic Windows crash window, gaim.exe
encountered a problem and needed to close which gave me this information:

I have the same issue- whenever I go from away w/ message to available
w/o message, gaim crashes.

I would tack on the bug report that my crash furnished, but there doesn't
seem to be a way to do that through a comment.

everytime i or the friend im testing this with tries to send a file with gaim
connected by silc, the file transfer window opens, but immediately freezes, so
you can't do anything but close the window, which crashes gaim completely. we
both have winxp sp2 and the kerio firewall and set the rules there to accept
both incoming and outgoing connections from gaim. normal text chatting works
fine with gaim + silc.

tested with the windows versions of 1.5.0 and the latest beta: 2.0.0beta6

same problem on both.

Summary: Gmail Buddies List shows all contacts

Initial Comment:
This error appeared to me on Dec 21, 2006 when compiled from SVN/CVS.

My Gmail account in Gaim (under the Jabber protocal) now shows ALL of my
contacts in my buddy list. Every single one of them, regardless of whether I
have them set to show up or not inside of Gmail itself or Gaim.

If I disable the option for Show Buddies Offline, they go away, but if I
enable it, they all return.

what do you mean regardless of whether you have them set to show up or
not?

To clarify, all contacts in my gmail account are displayed in the buddy
list, regardless of whether I have them set to show up in Gmail's contact
configuration, or within Gaim. All contacts show up, such as email address
for yahoo, and hotmail and even just names (with no associated email
address).

Within Gaim, I can alter this complete list gmail contact buddies and
remove all the contacts I do not want to be displayed within Gaim. However,
when I restart gaim, the list is repopulated and all of the buddies show
back up.

It's not issue about deleting user(s) from group. The root of issue is the
impossibility to move an user from one group to the other.

If you have two groups with different users and different group names, and

Summary: Yahoo Not on server list

Initial Comment:
Hi,

I'm a bit new to GAIM and noticed a weird issue with my
Yahoo profile after loging in to it via GAIM.

I noticed another bug on an old version of GAIM that
appears similar to my issue (I don't recall the bug ID).

Essential what seems to be happening is that when I
move Buddies between groups in the Buddy List windows,
they are either disappearing from view completely or
appear offline with a status of not on server list.
(I haven't tried moving Buddies from my other
accounts--AOL, gmail, and MSN--so I don't know if the
problem is present there.)

Is there any additional information I can provide you
on this to help resolve it? Or anything I can do to
help isolate it?

Is there a temporary fix for this that will cause my
now missing Buddies to reappear in my Buddy List?

Same problem with some Yahoo contacts, not everyones ;
Something interesting : normally, i class my contact in a personal group
in the display. I noticed that one of the yahoo contact, which bugs, works
correctly when I add the same name contact in the contact group (i
suppose the goup by default), in addition to my personel group. You can
try and if you are lucky it'll work.
In my case, only one out of my 3 bugged yahoo contacts works with this
wheeze.

I have also observed this problem, though I hadn't sorted
out that moving between groups was a trigger for it. It can
be worked around by disabling the account, using the
official Y!M client (eew) to re-add the buddy in the correct
group, then quitting and re-enabling the account in Gaim.

Thanks.

Discovered some additional symptoms related to this problem...

1) While the Yahoo Buddy that was moved to a different group
is no longer visible, if you highlight (with the mouse
cursor) the Buddies adjacent to its intended location, when
the description of the highlighted Buddy appears, you'll
also see a description of the Buddy that is otherwise not
visible in the Buddy List. This description, however,
matches the previous symptoms--that is, it shows the Buddy
as Offline and Not on server list.

2) If you right-click a Buddy that's adjacent to the
intended location of the moved Yahoo Buddy, at the bottom of
the popup menu you'll see the option Expand below which
you'll see the problematic Yahoo Buddy. Clicking Expand will

This is not a gaim bug. It occurs in Adium also. It's an
AIM server problem.

Summary: Too many empty newlines if contact has rich text enabled

Initial Comment:
I'm chatting with a buddy who has rich text enabled in his kopete.
I get two newlines before and after every message.

This problem goes away if he disables rich text or if i use another client.

Initial Comment:
Hello,

when receiving jabber messages from a friend who has recently switched over to
Kopete (0.12.3), I see empty lines in Gaim.

I'm using Gaim 2.0.0-beta5 from Debian Sid.

Dump from gaim:

(11:47:50) jabber: Recv (ssl)(659): message from='[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Kopete'
to='[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Gaim' type='chat' id='ab05a'

body xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'
p style=''man man, ze kunnen zagen in quot;be.providersquot; over hun
limieten :P/p

/html

this shows up in Gaim as per the screenshot I've attached.

I've found this KDE bugreport, but they seem to tell that it's a problem in
libgaim.

If you actually read the KDE bug report that you've linked to, you'll see
that the problem is actually related to Qt behavior.

Summary: When offline, GAIM stays connected/reconnects to AIM

Initial Comment:
Yep, it's weird.

Up until 2.0.0 beta 5, when I either started in offline mode, or switched to
offline mode, all of my contacts - AIM or not - would no longer be listed as
online.

Now with 2.0.0 beta 6:
- if I start in offline mode, I see Offline - connecting in the status area
and when the - connecting part goes away, any AIM contacts that I have that
are currently online are listed as online. My MSN and Yahoo accounts don't
appear (i.e. it appears to not connect to those services), but any currently
online AIM contacts are listed. Also, the icon in the system tray looks like
the away/invisible icon, not the offline tray icon.

- if I am in a mode other than offline, and then switch to offline, my MSN and
Yahoo contacts disappear (i.e. it appears to disconnect from those services),
but any AIM contacts that are currently online stay up there. As with the
previous situation, the icon in the system tray looks like the away/invisible
icon, not the offline tray icon.

Ideas?

Hmmm...that's odd. I just installed the debug version of 2.0.0 beta 6
over the existing 2.0.0 beta 6 non-debug version. (GAIM crashed while I
was writing up the initial part of this bug report).

Now GAIM is acting correctly as to offline behavior. Weird. Ideas?

Summary: Oscar offline messages - cannot send/receive non-latin chars

Initial Comment:
There is a problem with oscar offline messages in some
national encodings. I'd like to suggest a way to fix that.

Offline messages in Oscar don't contain an information
about encoding, and the encoding from the Advanced
page in the oscar account options is used, which is
ISO-8859-1 by default.

Due to that offline messages in some languages are not
converted into UTF-8 correctly. For example CP1251
should be used for Russian messages.

What I suggest is to get the default value for that
encoding from user locale:

Method #0 (Windows-only):
char encoding[10]=CP;

if(GetLocaleInfoA(LOCALE_USER_DEFAULT,LOCALE_IDEFAULTANSICODEPAGE,encoding+2,sizeof
encoding-2)){
we have a proper encoding here!
}

Method #1 (universal):
Use setlocale(LC_CTYPE,0) (provided that the right
locale has been set before) and then parse what is
there after the period in the returned string.

Maybe init_plugin in oscar.c is a proper place for that...

what version of gaim?

Your contact almost certainly does *not* use the UTF8 characterset. It is
expected that non-ascii messages will fail unless both parties use the same
characterset.

I notice that when using GAIM my buddy icon for yahoo will not update to my
friends that are actually using yahoo. I am using 2.0 beta 5 and have had the
same issues with beta 4. When I add myself as my own buddy i will see the
update picture, however friends on yahoo see a very old picture that I updated
while using yahoo messenger. In order to update a picture I will actually have
to update it using yahoo messenger. Buddy Icons for AIM and MSN seem to update
fine.

What I did (to save my away messages) was to edit the status.xml file and
remove all Auto-Cached status messages.

For example, I deleted anything that had a stats name equal to
'Auto-Cached' and a substatus tag like this one:

status name='Auto-Cached' transient='true' created='1169932350'
lastused='1169932350' usage_count='1'
stateavailable/state
message /message
substatus
account protocol='prpl-aim'MYSCREENNAME/account
stateavailable/state
message /message
/substatus
/status

If you delete the whole tree for each status involving Available, I
found it to fix mine from crashing (I had about 4, one or two with text in
the message area). Just remember to make a backup.

Summary: Crashes Several Times/Day

Initial Comment:
I'm running 2.0.0 beta 6. Windows XP SP2. Gaim crashes several times a day.
First the tabs stop redrawing correctly, then other parts of the window.
Eventually it starts having terrible screen redrawing problems with portions
being all black or all white. During this time it is also consuming relatively
large quantities of RAM. There is no particular action that causes it to
crash in the end.

Attached is the gaim.rpt file for basically my yesterday and the later part of
the previous afternoon. After I had installed the debug version.

I'll gather any other info you want.

INterestingly the problem goes away if I move the tabs to the top from the
left. I think this indicates it is probably a GTK problem of some sort not
really an issue in Gaim.

I am having the same problem with a WinXP pro xp2 install.
This has been happening since gaim2b5. I have a gaim.rpt if needed as
well (i couldnt find out how to upload it at this time)

i notice it after i stop the screen saver, and sometimes it happens w/o
screen saver. possibly idle time?
same thing hnappens, the windows are not redrawn correctly, and usually
completes the crash if i right click on the windows taskbar icon.

I too can do testing if need be between work.

Summary: Gaim doesn't respect GTK theme colors in MSN and AIM chats.

Initial Comment:
With white GTK theme set everything is ok, but with
black one it's not. I attached a screenshot
illustrating the problem.

It is basically like this - in MSN chats TEXT color is
taken from GTK theme, while BACKGROUND color is always
white. In AIM chats TEXT is always black, while
BACKGROUND color is always taken from theme.

I'm not sure if this is Gaim problem (it's probably
not), which misrenders it or problem of these IMs,
which send text like that. Neverthless, it's possible
to fix that on Gaim side. (by comparing sent color and
system one and inverting if neccessary)

Other IMs could be affected too, thought I only tested
Gadu besides these. (Which is not affected.)

Summary: away buddies are displayed in black

Initial Comment:
I have my GTK+ theme set to display all text in white with black backgrounds.
However, in Gaim, away buddies are displayed in *black* (which, on a normal
theme, looks exactly the same as available buddies) which I cannot read and
which makes my buddy list look terrible. This functionality changes nothing for
users with a black-on-white theme. I am also absolutely sure that this is not a
problem with my theme, as I have tried other non-black-on-white themes that
don't have black anywhere in them and they also display away buddies in black.
If there is some workaround or fix I have yet to find it.

Initial Comment:
If I try to send a file to someone running the new
Yahoo Instant Messenger with Voice (version 7), I see
the file upload quickly on my end and my friend never
receives the file.

This worked fine when sending to earlier versions of
YIM clients and still works fine when sending to
other GAIM clients.

I'm running GAIM 1.5 on WinXP SP2.

I'm pretty sure that YIM7 refuses to talk to the version
that gaim yahoo reports itself as for file transfers.
Whether this is because YIM7 no longer supports the method
we use for file transfers, I don't know.

FWIW, the 'sending' sent it off to the Yahoo transfer proxy
server, which is why it went. And YIM7's inability to
transfer files to what gaim identifies as, would explain why
it's not received.

Whether we'll be able to do anything to work around this,
without implementing full p2p transfers, no idea as yet and
will probably take a little time.

Summary: Filetransfer file names and speed reporting

Initial Comment:
In the File Transfers window (using Win32, on 2.0.0 beta 6), the filename
that is placed in the window is the one that the sender sent it to you as, and
not as you actually named it. This should be changed to display the name as
you saved it locally.

Also, in the file transfer details, the Speed always stays at 0.00 KB/s, and
the Time always states Not started, even as the file transfer progresses and
completes downloading.

I should also add that when the transfer is completed, in your chat

locally saved name.

I confirm this in Linux for betas 4 and 5, using MSN for both sending and
receiving files. Transfers are correctly finished, anyway -ignoring the
naming bug in beta 5-. In my case, anyway, it shows the Not started state
in the Time Elapsed field.

It's beta6 now, and the Yahoo! Messenger users still can't see my avatar.

The local-set avatar is visible on other GAIM 2.0.0beta5, 2.0.0beta3.1
clients when I'm using 2.0.0beta5. On GAIM 1.5.1 the Yahoo-set avatar is
visible when I'm using 2.0.0beta5. On YM neither one is visible, but a
white square is displayed instead when I'm using GAIM 2.0.0beta5. Any ideas
why this is happening?

In windows it doesn't work. If you change your avatar in beta5, in Yahoo!
Messenger you either get a black square or nothing.

Hm, tested it in Kopete, and avatar changing worked :(
Looks like the bug is in Gaim beta 5

Yes I can confirm that.

Since the beta versions following 1.5.0 it doesn't work. It's a gaim bug.

In win32 with normal yahoo, yahoo 1.5.0 and 2.0beta5 running in parallel
you can change your avatar only in 1.5.0! (and obviously normal yahoo)

Hm, it just fixed itself, this must have been an error in the yahoo
service, I don't think it's a bug in gaim.
I deleted my old account, restarted gaim, and it didn't help, but it was
working with my new yahoo account. Then after midnight the avatar worked
for my old account. You know, yahoo is a buggy pile of s**t

I can confirm this, it was working with my account, but then it stopped
setting up an avatar. I tried with another account, and it works with it,
but it doesn't with my old account.

After seeing the duplicate bugs and their comments, I took a look in
GAIM's icon cache to see what format are the pictures coming from users of
Yahoo Messenger, Trillian and possibly others.

I found out that GAIM allows any image size while all the others are 96x96
pixels. To be more specific, I found these three formats (according to
file) to form 99% of the icon cache (all of the on the Yahoo! network,
the other 1% are from GAIM (non 96x96 PNGs), an one picture being a JPEG
from Google Talk and a 5-6 are HTTP sessions/errors from Yahoo when GAIM
tried retrieving avatars):

PNG image data, 96 x 96, 8-bit colormap, non-interlaced
PNG image data, 96 x 96, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
PNG image data, 96 x 96, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced

I didn't run any thorough tests, but I took one 96 x 96, 8-bit colormap
from the cache and set it as my avatar. And it is displayed OK in the
Windows Yahoo Messenger client.

My guess is that GAIM 1.5 used to enforce these limits on the Yahoo!
network and stopped doing it somewhere on the way to 2.0. Base on this
guess, the fix would look like this:
1. large images:
   a. shrink image so one of the smallest dimension is 96. Crop the other
dimension to 96, keeping the image center.
   b. shrink image so the largest dimension is 96. Center the image on the
smallest dimension. Fill remaining space with white so the result is
96x96.
2. small images:
   a. same as 1a, but stretch instead of shrink
   b. same as 1b, but stretch instead of shrink

Now, I don't know which of a and b is better to use. I'm not sure how YM
does it, but so far it looks like point a. Why point a? Because it's
easier to crop than to center+fill.

Summary: Cannot connect to AIM sometimes, getting Socket Error 10038

Initial Comment:
I'm running Gaim 2.0.0beta6, and I cannot connect to AIM sometimes.

When it connects, it stops and says -screenname- disconnected: Cannot connect
to BOS server (Windows socket error #10038) about half the time. The other
half of the time it works perfectly fine and connects and I can use AIM
normally.

When this error comes up sometimes I can just click on the error, click the
Connect button, and it'll work again. But sometimes it just gives me the error
again. Repeated attempts to get it going just make it so I can't connect for
ten minutes.

I've Googled up and down the internet trying to see if there's a reason, but i
can't figure it out. It's apparently trying to do a socket operation on a
non-socket, but I don't know how to fix it. Also, for the record, I tried
connecting multiple times to AIM using other clients (namely Trillian and
Miranda IM) and they seem to work fine; I suspect it's a Gaim specific problem.

Summary: Release notification plug-in not working

Initial Comment:
I have release notification plug-in enabled, and yet,
I never get notified of new releases. It is
now almost a month since the new version of GAIM
came out, and I only found out because I decided to check
the website on a lark.

This has been going on for me since at least beta3.
I am running this on win32. I don't have any other
system where I can run this to verify that it is
only win32 problem or across all platforms.

Is there any way that I can provide debug logs, or
some such thing to help figure this one out ?
Is there a port that needs to be opened up on my
firewall ? I never needed to before when I was using
1.5.

cheers,

mehul

Initial Comment:
Zephyr protocol uses MAXHOSTNAMELEN and MAXPATHLEN without checking if they are
defined.

Hacky fix is to check if they are defined, and if not, to define them.

Correct approach is to use dynamically allocated buffers.
