When opening Gaim, it simply doesn't open, directly crashes and I get the Send
a report from Windows.

Happens with every release. The only one that doesn't crash, is GaimPortable.

well, version from the RPT is 1.5.0, and given that MSN is rather buggy on
that version due to protocol changes and such, you should do an install of
2.0.0-beta6 and see if the issue is already fixed

Do you have cygwin installed, or any other program that might have
different versions of dependencies used by gaim?

Summary: ICQ password broken after changing it (pw 8 chars)

Initial Comment:
Hi,

unfortunately I have to report a serious bug in Gaim. When changing your ICQ
password and your desired new password is longer than eight chars, it will
become unusable. You won't be able to login with your new password!

I could reproduce this bug with another created account after I've locked
myself out... I've tried to capture the packet with the password change
request, but up to now I wasn't able to convert it back to plain text
information.

In Bug 487645 there might be additional information. One thing for sure: ICQ
passwords may just be 8 characters long. Gaim should handle that...

Best regards,
Fabian.

Hi,

after trying to debug with gdb I got some new information:
If the password is longer than eight characters, you can use the first
eight characters for logging in. The whole password string will be sent to
the ICQ server, but only the length passwdlen in aim_icq_changepasswd() --
aimbs_putle16(fr-data, passwdlen+1); will be interepreted.

I think the best solution for this problem would be limiting the input
field for the new passwords to 8 characters when they are used in an ICQish
context.

It seems I did enter garbage for my new password, so my old account is
lost...:( But really strange about that is, that the same thing happened
with another account I created for getting to know how my password was
corrupted and with a third account everything is working fine... Any
ideas?

Best regards,
Fabian.

Hmmm, I think I found the problem. When I got the debug version of 2b6,
and started installing, it prompted me that I had an old GTK+. So I
installed it, and at least the debug version works now. I'll go ahead and
try the normal version later and see if it works.

In the mean time, I guess what has to be added would be that prompt to the
normal version, which as you know is to check for the version of GTK+.

I notice that the libgaim-client.so and libgaim.so libraries are GPL'ed. It

that other programs can use these libraries.

If these libraries really need to be GPL, could the libraries be moved to

No.

If Solaris has such a rule, then the Solaris package of Gaim shouldn't put
the libraries in /usr/lib. If there is no Solaris package of Gaim, there is
no problem.

Then he should avoid blanket statements like It would be better if these

(Non-GPLed programs can also use GPL libraries provided they are

Summary: windows live buddy icon not showing

Initial Comment:
When talking to someone who is using the new Windows Live, their buddy icon
doesn't show up.

Could it be possible that this is related to #1660218 ?

Summary: Gaim tray hint mask the time hint.click

Initial Comment:
Normaly, the tray-icon clock hint displays the current date when the mouse is
left over it.

When gaim is loaded, frequently leaving the mouse over the clock does not
display the date hint.
In this state :
  - a single click on the clock show a small hint Gaim, near the Gaim icon.
  - a double click on the clock finally opens the time setting pannels. After
that, the clock hint is working again, until

This has the same effect that if Gaim have a transparent windows overlapping
the icons placed at its right and catching mouse over messages, or if Gaim
have captured the mouse messages for that zone.

Win XP SP2, rightly updated.

Best regards,
Pascal

Summary: Gaim crashes several times a day

Initial Comment:
Gaim 2.0 beta 6 crashes several times a day, midconversation. Nothing I am
doing when it crashes is especially unique. Mid-typing, I will notice the
lines of the widgets (the tabs) program turn into a single grey panel, and then
the program crashes and asks to send an error report to Microsoft.

This problem did not exist in any of the previous beta releases, and I've used
them all.

Is there a debug log I can send or something? Could this be a GTK problem? I
have the latest GTK+ installed as well.

In the first page of preferences, you can choose the Placement of the
tabs for conversation windows - if you choose something other than Top,
there is a GTK+ bug in the current versions that causes leakage:

Summary: security issue with installer

Initial Comment:
The installer currently offers to launch Gaim at the end of installation.
Because the installer requires privelige elevation, particularly in Windows
Vista but applicable to Windows XP as well, the Gaim launched at the end of
installation is running in the administrator's account instead of a hopefully
limited user account. The general technique for fixing this issue is having a
wrapper installer that can run as a limited user that launches stub installers
for the administrative portions. By doing so, the installer launching Gaim is
not elevated, so Gaim will not be elevated.

On further analysis, I don't think this isn't a bug in the gaim installer
at all.

If there is a standard procedure for dealing with this type of scenario,
NSIS should deal with it - each installer shouldn't need to screw around
with this. The ability to launch Gaim at the end of the installation is
something built-in to NSIS.

Personally, I appreciate the submitter bringing this to everyone's
attention. I see numerous programs making the assumption that the
administrator account and the user's account are one and the same.

Most of the issues I see with running a limited user account is not due to
the fact it is limited. It is due to it being a different account (and
profile/registry). To further the discussion about the Gaim installation,
I would point out that, although this is a one-time security issue, the
user's initial setup (i.e. adding IM accounts, adjusting preferences, etc.)
is modifying settings in the Administrator's profile. The user logs out
and logs back in (as user), and all that work has to be done again.

Finally, I want to address the clunky Run As comment. It's true: XP has
not made it super easy to elevate privileges, though it is much easier than
2000 and NT. Too often I see the attitude that, if Run As is clunky, we
should just give up hope and do nothing to make it better. Our inaction
keeps the cycle going. For us non-programmers, all we can do is try to
educate people and submit bug reports. :)

I understand the issue (I did understand it from the initial submission,
and meant to comment on it, but didn't get around to it) and it is a valid
concern.

Fortunately, this not too critical for a number of reasons:
It will only apply to at most one instance per installation.
The impact to WinXP users is basically negligible since almost nobody uses
the limited accounts if they have the ability to be Admin users (the
privilege escalation through Run As is so clunky that just about nobody
uses it).

We should (and will) fix this, however, I don't see an easy way to do this
without some major changes to the installer and I don't have time to do
that right now. I'm tempted to simply remove the ability to have the
installer launch gaim for now.

Patches for alternative solutions are welcome :)

No, what I am saying is this scenario:
Assume Gaim has a network-accessible buffer overflow.
Person is using Windows Vista where they are essentially always a limited
user or using Windows XP primarily as a limitd user.
Person begins a Gaim installation. As is necessary for installation,
Windows Vista prompts for elevation or installer is manually elevated in
Windows XP.
Person runs Gaim at the end of setup.

Actual result:
Gaim is running in the administrative account. Malicious person could use
the buffer overflow in Gaim to do activities requiring administrative
rights.

Expected result:
Gaim is running in limited user account. Malicious person using buffer
overflow can only affect user account.

Initial Comment:
everytime i or the friend im testing this with tries to send a file with gaim
connected by silc, the file transfer window opens, but immediately freezes, so
you can't do anything but close the window, which crashes gaim completely. we
both have winxp sp2 and the kerio firewall and set the rules there to accept
both incoming and outgoing connections from gaim. normal text chatting works
fine with gaim + silc.

tested with the windows versions of 1.5.0 and the latest beta: 2.0.0beta6

same problem on both.

any buddies...I cant remember exactly..hehe), along with Password (which COULD
have been actually an incorrect password...hehe, it's been a while since I used
MSN...)

When I hit Save and then toggled the account to Online to login, It got to
Getting cookie and then I got the generic Windows crash window, gaim.exe
encountered a problem and needed to close which gave me this information:

AppName: gaim.exeAppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: libglib-2.0-0.dll
ModVer: 2.6.6.0 Offset: 0004117d

It also generated a little log at C:\DOCUME~1\my
account\LOCALS~1\Temp\53f3_appcompat.txt:

Summary: MSN Crashes gaim on login

Initial Comment:
I reported this here already at
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailatid=100235aid=1661614group_id=235
but I sorta forgot to run the debug stuff and it closed.

But anyways, here's the new info:

I logged into my MSN account, using username@hotmail.com, with the CORRECT
password, using the MSN network...

It went as far as Getting cookie and then crashed, creating,
4971_appcompat.txt

Which contained:
