In recent versions of MSN Messenger, there is a field
called "personal message" in addition to the nick field.
The content of this should be displayed together with
the nick in the buddy list, and you should be able to
set your own.

There is an old patch (now invalid; it doesn't work for 2.0 series of
GAIM) that implements 11th version of MSN protocol (MSNP11) and displays
personal messages. It was posted in late 2005. A year and a half later,
Gaim 2.0 still uses MSNP9 protocol. What's the holdup?
I don't know C (I regularly use Java, though) and I never coded for an
open-source project as of yet, so I don't have courage to do it; but for
existing Gaim developers it shouldn't be that hard .. Am I wrong?

amsn 0.96RC1 got this feature (and is open source).
unfortunately I don't code myself, but it may interest gaim
developpers.
gaim REALLY needs this features. gaim is a great soft and I
cannot convince my friends to use it because of this lack !

This would be very useful for people who use msn a lot.
In my opinion the "personal message" should be put into the
statusmessage system, so that its shown below the nick in
the buddylist and when you set your own statusmessage in
Gaim, it should set the "personal message" in msn.
