Summary: ICQ: ability to add without authorization

Initial Comment:
In the days prior to server lists, there were common
hacks available to the official ICQ clients to make
them ignore the authorization process when adding new
contacts. (... and not display ads, and so on.) The
authorization process was completely optional, as all
data was stored locally anyhow.

If you install a newer ICQ (2001b and on), it uploads
the complete client-based contact list automatically to
the ICQ server with no new authorization. It would be
much simpler for users if GAIM would use that mechanism
for adding users, if possible, and ignore the whole
authorization farce altogether.

I'm not really concerned with how secure or insecure it is. I'm concerned
with AOL's perception of Gaim. I don't think we should do anything to make
them think we're trying to undermine their intent.

Also, anyone with an old (2000b and prior) ICQ should upgrade to a newer
(2001b and on) ICQ before trying ANYTHING. 2000b and earlier don't store
your contact list on the server, so you'll lose your list if you move to a
different computer or switch to any other client. I don't really see a
need for Gaim to document the deficiencies of a 6 year old IM client.

I think you missed the point(s).

1) ICQ has no real security. If other programs can bypass it, not doing so
means GAIM is simply lacking a feature that others use.

2) Having to get authorisation again because one switches to GAIM is not
security, it's just a waste of time and a giant pain. At the very least, it
would be appropriate to document that anyone with an old (2000b and prior)
ICQ should upgrade to a newer (2001b and on) ICQ before trying GAIM, as
GAIM will not handle the situation properly.

I'm going to reject his. I don't think Gaim should be in the habit of
bypassing security mechanisms that are put into place by the IM networks we
connect to.
